二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、While many Thais understand the common greeting ways used around the world, they feel proud of their special way of greeting — wai. Therefore, being skilled in such non-verbal communication can help you win deeper respect and acceptance among the Thais with whom you interact.

“Wai” sounds like the word “why” and is usually paired with the word “hello” in Thai, thereby making it a way of greeting and saying hello; Thais also wai one another when thanking someone, apologizing to someone, saying goodbye or showing respect.

Largely speaking, the way you wai indicates the degree of respect. To make a wai, you should first put palms (手心) together, and bring your hands to touch the middle of your chest and slightly lower your head so that your index fingers (食指) touch your nose. You can use this wai for friends and people of the same ages. The second, and a bit more formal, way to wai is to bring your thumbs to the tip of your nose and your index fingers to your forehead. And lastly, for royalty (皇室) and monks, lower your head until your thumbs are in-between your eyebrows. In this case, men should bow while women should bend their knees.

As a foreigner, you are not supposed to give a wai to everyone you see, but you are often expected to return the greeting. Thais won’t feel disrespected if you make mistakes during the exchange of wais, but will appreciate the effort you take to respect local customs. The safest bet is to wai back who wais you; however, do not wai anyone who is clearly younger than you. Instead, give him a nod and smile.

【1】What can we know from the first paragraph?

A.Thais know little about some common ways to greet.

B.You can win an award when you give a wai to a Thai.

C.It can be beneficial if you can wai properly in Thailand.

D.Thais think highly of their ways of verbal communication.

【2】What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A.The types of wais.

B.The occasions to use a wai.

    C.The benefits of a wai.

D.The people to use a wai to.

【3】Which of the following is the wai you use to greet a friend?

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

【4】How is a foreigner supposed to wai in Thailand?

    A.To give a wai to a child.

B.To give a wai to whoever he meets.

C.To nod his head and smile at the same time.

D.To return a wai to someone not younger than him.

  • 23、Chinese mooncake is the representative food of the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is a kind of round cookie with various fillings and different artistic patterns on the surface.

In Chinese culture, roundness symbolizes completeness and togetherness. The mooncake is not just a food. It’s a cultural tradition deep in Chinese people’s hearts, symbolizing a spiritual feeling. At Mid-Autumn Festival, people eat mooncakes together with family, and present mooncakes to relatives or friends to express love and best wishes.

As early as the Shang and Zhou dynasties in what today are Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces in east China, there was a kind of “Taishi cake” thick at the center and thin at the edge, which was the origin of the mooncake. In the Han Dynasty, sesame (芝麻) and walnuts were introduced into China, and round cookies filled with these foods appeared. It was not until the Tang Dynasty that the name “mooncake” was used for the first time. In the Northern Song Dynasty, mooncakes got popular in the royal palace. In the Ming Dynasty, the custom of eating these cookies during the Mid-Autumn Festival became popular.

Mooncakes vary according to different regional styles and tastes. Cantonese-style mooncakes are known for their sweetness. Suzhou-style mooncakes have existed for more than a thousand years. They have soft layers of dough (面团) and lots of sugar and lard, making them available in sweet or salty tastes. Beijing-style mooncakes use sweetness delicately and are decorated well. Chaoshan-style mooncakes are usually larger than other mooncakes with common fillings of red bean paste and potato paste.

Most mooncakes contain high amounts of sugar and oil, which are not healthy. To decrease the harmfulness that high fat and calories bring to our body, some foods are recommended to eat together with mooncakes, including tea, sour fruit like grapes, and wine. They help digest and take away fat in our body. Also, do not eat too much at one time.

【1】What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.The features of moon cakes.

B.The history of the moon cakes.

C.The customs of the moon cakes.

    D.The meaning behind moon cakes.

【2】When was the name “mooncake” used for the first time?

    A.In the Han Dynasty.

    B.In the Tang Dynasty.

    C.In the Ming Dynasty.

    D.In the Northern Song Dynasty.

【3】What is special about the Beijing-style mooncakes?

    A.They contain less sugar.

B.They are generally larger in size.

C.They have a much longer history.

    D.They feature fine decorative patterns.

【4】What is the purpose of the last paragraph?

A.To stress the importance of a healthy diet.

B.To call on people to value traditional culture.

C.To tell people how to eat mooncakes healthily.

D.To recommend some new flavors of mooncakes.

  • 24、   It is not uncommon for human-generated fires-lit to clear the land out for farming-in the Amazon rainforest to get out of control. However, this year, the number of wildfires has been extraordinarily high. Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (INPE) has recorded over 73 ,000 fires in the world's largest tropical rainforest between January and August 2019, 2,500 of which are currently active. This is the highest number observed since the agency began keeping records in 2013.

Brazil, which is home to 60 percent of the Amazon rainforest, has been the hardest hit. The thick smoke from the fires currently covers half of the country and can be seen clearly from space. The fires have recently also spilled over to the neighboring country of Bolivia, where they have thus far torched over 113,000 acres, including forests and grasslands in Chiquitania, a popular nature reserve.

The area’s dry season, which spans from August to November, is undoubtedly a factor in the unusually high number of fires. “However, there is nothing abnormal about the climate this year or the rainfall in the Amazon region, which is just a little below average,” INPE researcher Alberto Setzer told Reuters, “Starting a fire is the work of humans.”

While all wildfires are harmful to the environment, the ones in the Amazon can be particularly so. Often referred to as the “lungs of the planet,” the tropical rainforest generates more than 20% of the world's oxygen. It also sucks up about a quarter of the 2.4 billion metric tons of carbon that global forests absorb each year. The rainforest is, therefore, crucial in regulating global climate. If the Amazon disappears or is reduced in size greatly, it could change weather patterns everywhere, impacting everything from how much food farms can produce to the availability of clean drinking water.

1What do we know about the Amazon wildfires in 2019?

A.Most of them are still on.

    B.They caused many deaths.

    C.Their numbers reached the lowest.

D.They affected more than one country.

2What accounted for the start of the wildfires according to Alberto Setzer?

    A.Human activities. B.The high temperature.

    C.Strong winds. D.The dry season.

3What's the main idea of the last paragraph?

A.The severity of the Amazon wildfires.

B.The significance of the Amazon rainforest.

C.The potential effects of the Amazon wildfires.

D.The best ways to battle the Amazon wildfires.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.The Amazon Rainforest: the Lungs of the Planet

B.Brazil: the Hardest Hit of the Amazon Wildfires

C.The Amazon Wildfires Spread Across South America

D.Record Amazon Wildfires Could Accelerate Climate Change
