二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Growing up in Haiti, Phedjina Jean remembers the struggles she and her family went through to access basic services taken for granted in America. Her long-term goal is to become a physician and to set up a health clinic in her small town in Haiti. Now as a student at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Jean is looking to use her experience as an immigrant (移民) growing up in an underdeveloped country to help children growing up in Haiti in a similar situation as herself.

In high school, she was accepted by a nonprofit called A Leadership Journey, which helps teenage people of color go on international trips. In 2019, Jean visited Kenya with the group and visited local schools and villages, assisting locals in education, healthcare and community organization.

“The experience I had in Kenya was eye-opening. I saw so much of my childhood in Kenya. When we went to the school, the children were playing a game, and I was the only American who was familiar with it, since we used to play it back in Haiti,” Jean said.

That experience has motivated Jean to seek more international experience as she works on reaching her goals. She is currently aiming to visit South Africa in December, but unlike her first trip, she will need to raise the funds herself. She has tried to raise the $3,000 necessary for the trip on website GoFundMe.

Jean would be taking the trip with International Children's Outreach, which hosts college students from different countries and encourages improving the lives of poor children and young people around the world while integrating the college students into the education process. Jean said that she would put together a STEM education plan and share it with students and educators while assisting in schools and the local community.

“My parents say to always remember where you came from. That doesn't just mean Haiti; it can mean anywhere in the world where people confront challenges due to poverty. I want to be able to share my experience with children from around the world,” Jean said.

【1】Why did Phedjina Jean decide to become a physician?

A.To make a difference in her hometown.

B.To lift her family out of poverty.

C.To get some basic medical services.

D.To help more immigrants like herself.

【2】What does International Children's Outreach aim to do?

    A.Prevent racial discrimination in Haiti.

B.Raise money for students to go on trips.

C.Inspire college students to help poor children.

D.Encourage people to choose careers in education.

【3】What does the underlined word “confront” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Ignore.

    B.Face.

    C.Avoid.

    D.Issue.

【4】Which of the following words can best describe Jean?

    A.Modest and determined.

    B.Talented and creative.

    C.Broad-minded and humorous.

    D.Warm-hearted and helpful.

  • 22、My students often tell me they don’t have “enough time” to do all their schoolwork. My reply is often brief—You have as much time as the president. I usually carry on a bit about there being 24 hours in the day for everyone, and suggest that “not enough time” is not an acceptable explanation of not getting something done.

Once in graduate school, I tried to excuse myself to one of my professors by saying that I was working hard. His answer to me was, “That’s irrelevant. What’s important is the quality of your work.” Since then I have had time to think about the “hard worker” dodge (伎俩), and I have come to some conclusions — all relevant to the issue of how much time we have.

If you analyze(分析) the matter, you can identify(确定) two parts of the problem: There is, of course, the matter of “time”, which we can think of as fixed. Then there is the problem of “work” during that time. But, as my professor suggested, it’s not how hard one works but the quality of the product that is important.

That led me to a new idea: the quality of the work. That concept is perhaps best explained by a sign I once saw on the wall in someone’s office---Don’t work harder but work smarter. There’s a lot of sense in that idea.

If you can’t get more time, and few of us can, the only solution(解决方法) is to improve the quality of the work. That means thinking of ways to get more out of the same time than we might otherwise get. That should lead us to an analysis of our work habits. Since “work” for students usually means “homework”, the expression “work habits” should be read as “study habits”.

Then, as a smart student, you will seek to improve those skills that you use in study, chiefly reading and writing. If you learn to read better and write better, there are big benefits that pay off in all your studies.

  • 23、How much time do you spend doing research before you make a decision? The answer for many of us, it turns out, is “hardly any”, even when spending a lot of money. Most people make two trips or fewer to a dealership before buying a car. We are not necessarily conserving our resources to spend them on bigger decisions either. One in five Americans spends more time planning their upcoming vacation than they do on their financial future.

To be sure, some people go over every detail exhaustively before making a choice, and it’s certainly possible to overthink things. But there are also people who are quick to jump to conclusions. This way of thinking is considered a “cognitive bias (认知偏差)”, a term psychologists use to describe a tendency toward a specific mental mistake.

In our own research, we have found that hasty judgments are often just one part of larger error-prone patterns in behavior and thinking. We’ve also found that people who tend to make such “jumps” in their reasoning may experience a wide range of costs.

To study jumping to conclusions, we worked with more than 600 people from the general population. Because much of the work on this bias comes from studies of schizophrenia (精神分裂症), we borrowed a thinking game used in that area of research.

In this game, players encountered someone who was fishing from one of two lakes: in one lake, most of the fish were red, and in the other, most were gray. The fisher would catch one fish at a time and stop only when players thought they could say which lake they were fishing in. Some players had to see many fish before making a decision. Others, the jumpers, stopped after only one or two.

We also asked participants questions to learn more about their other thinking patterns. We found that the fewer fish a player needed to see, the more errors he or she made in other beliefs, reasoning and decisions.

What our research and other recent studies show is that sometimes the most important decision can be when you choose to spend time considering before deciding. Even gathering just a little bit more evidence may help you avoid a major mistake.

【1】Why does the author ask the question in the first paragraph?

    A.To raise a controversial issue.

    B.To introduce the author.

    C.To develop a new concept.

    D.To lead to the topic.

【2】Which of the following people may have a cognitive bias?

A.A person who always regrets making a decision.

B.A person who buys a coat when seeing it at first sight.

C.A person who checks every detail before buying a car.

D.A person who suffers from the disease of schizophrenia.

【3】What conclusion can we draw from the thinking game?

A.Participants in the game are from a specific hospital.

B.The jumpers tend to make more mistakes in reasoning.

C.The fish in the two lakes were equal in number.

D.The fisher helped participants make correct decisions.

【4】What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?

A.To advise people to think twice before making decisions.

B.To analyse the reasons for jumpers making quick decisions.

C.To explain the concept of a cognitive bias.

D.To provide some tips for people to make correct decisions.

  • 24、London—A few hundred regular customers and pedestrians(行人)offered to help October Books of Southampton in England move books along the street last Friday. The shop had been struggling to afford the rising rent prices of the building that they had occupied since 1977 and decided to move to an old bank building down the block.

But how would they be able to move their books to the new location without having to pay for expensive moving services? October Books put out a call for volunteers to form a “human conveyor belt” between their old store and the new location 500 feet down the street.

They expected maybe a few dozen people to show up, but to their surprise, over 200 people lined up on the sidewalk to pass each of the store's 2,000 books to their new home. Amy Brown, one of the store's employees, said that she was astonished at so many people. “I was handing books to people without actually seeing the entire of it,” said Brown. “So it was only after about 20minutes that I actually went out into the road and saw the extent of the people.” When passing pedestrians asked what people were doing, they would join in to give a hand. Nearby restaurants even brought hot teas and coffees for the volunteers.

“It was really sort of surprising and positive, and just a really moving experience to see people joining in because they wanted to help. And they wanted to be part of something bigger,” Brown said. Now this small independent book store in England isn't just surviving—it is growing thanks to the city that adores its literary services.

【1】What led to October Books moving to a new location?

    B.Government policy.

    D.Business condition.

【2】How did the passers-by react to the “human conveyor belt”?

A.They contributed their little bit to help.

B.They stopped and took some pictures.

C.They bought hot teas for the volunteers.

D.They felt astonished and called the local TV.

【3】What's the best title of the passage?

A.Booklovers Gather for Moving Books in England.

B.Human Chain of People Help Move a Bookstore.

C.Bookstore Gets Crowdfunding for Future Survival.

D.People Feel Positive by Helping out a Bookstore.
