二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Anna Heusler and a group of cyclists were riding towards Adelaide on Friday when they spotted a koala sitting in the middle of the road. It wasn’t the first time that Heusler had seen koalas out and about on the roads while riding—but this koala’s reaction amazed her. 'We stopped the bikes to help the koala get off the road, otherwise it would get hit by cars. But the koala walked up to me very quickly. It was obviously very thirsty, ' Heusler told CNN.

'As I was giving it a drink from our water bottles, it climbed up onto my bike. I've never seen a koala move so quickly. They're usually not pet animals, they stay up in the trees and people admire them from afar. '

'None of us have ever seen anything like it. We gave it as much as we could and then made sure it was off the road and back to safety. 'Heusler shared the adorable yet heartbreak-ing images to her blog, showing the koala drinking water from her bottle. 'Australian Koala Bears suffered severe thirst in a heatwave. This koala walked right up to me as I was going down and climbed up onto my bike while I gave it water, ' she captioned the image. The video has since gone viral online, ranking top of millions of views on social media around the world. 'There's nothing but tragedy in Australia. It's burning out of control' Heusler said. 'I hope this incident helps spread awareness. '

Severe fires in the Adelaide Hills have burned 25,000 hectares of land, leaving koalas searching for food and water hard. Adelaide Koala Rescue's Jane Brister is currently caring for 46 koalas that have had their homes destroyed. She said the centre doesn’t normally care for this many koalas at once and the increase was due to the fires. 'A big problem we’ re noticing now is that koalas are coming in starving… there's just no food, ' Ms Brister said. Koalas eat eucalyptus (桉树)leaves—but thousands of trees have been destroyed by fires. Firefighters now across the country are taking time to care for wildlife when they find them before handing them to the correct authorities.

【1】How did the koala surprise Heusler during her trip?

A.It approached her for the water.

B.It arried its baby to beg for her help.

【3】Why did Heusler post the koala pictures online?

  • 22、There have been few positives during the pandemic but British academics may have unearthed one people look more attractive in protective masks.

Dr Michael Lewis, an expert in faces, said research carried out before the pandemic had found that medical face masks reduced attractiveness because they were associated with disease. “We wanted to test whether this had changed since face coverings became common and understand whether the type of mask had any effect.” he said. “Our study suggests faces are considered most attractive when covered by medical face masks. This may be because we’re used to health care workers wearing blue masks and now we associate these with people in caring or medical professions.”

The research was carried out in February 202I by which time the British population had become used to wearing masks in some circumstances. Forty-three women were asked to rate on a scale of one to 10 the attractiveness of images of male faces without a mask, wearing a plain cloth mask, a blue medical face mask, and holding a plain black book covering the area a face mask would hide. The participants said those wearing a cloth mask were significantly more attractive than the ones with no masks or whose faces were partly covered by the book. But the surgical mask—which was just a normal, disposable kind—made the wearer look even better.

“The pandemic has changed our psychology in how we perceive the wearers of masks.” said Lewis. “When we see someone wearing a mask we no longer think that person has a disease, I need to stay away’ Lewis said it was possible that masks made people more attractive because they directed attention to the eyes. Other studies had found that covering the left or right half of a face also made people look more attractive, partly because the brain fills in the missing gaps and exaggerates the overall impact.

【1】How did people wearing medical face masks use to strike others?

    A.strange

    B.relaxing

    C.undesirable

    D.attractive

【2】According to the research, which of the following is the most appealing?

A.Tom, holding a blue medical face mask

B.Mark, wearing a plain cloth mask.

C.Paul, a book covering the lower area of the face

D.Jason, with a surgical mask covering his face.

【3】What can be inferred about the effect of the pandemic on people from the text?

A.People have changed their attitude to medical workers.

B.People prefer to wear masks when they are outdoors.

C.People hold a more positive view on those wearing masks

D.People keep a positive attitude to persons with illness

【4】What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A.Masks help during the pandemic.

    B.Men need to wear masks.

    C.Find ways to become attractive.

    D.Face masks make you charming.

  • 23、Sammie Vance knows it feels bad to be left out. So she has been helping kids who feel lonely make friends.

Sammie is 14. When she was in the third grade, she started the Buddy Bench program. That was at her school, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Anyone who felt lonely could sit on the “buddy bench.” It showed others that someone needed a friend.

The bench brought kids together. “There was one little boy at school, younger than me,” Sammie told TIME for Kids. “He would see me in the hallway and give me a thumbs-up. That told me that what I was doing helped him.”

It costs money to build benches. Sammie decided to make them out of recycled materials. This lowered the cost. And the benches were eco-friendly.

Sammie gathered friends in her community. They collected 1,200 pounds of bottle caps. A company called Green Tree Plastics made three benches with the bottle caps.

Sammie has helped communities all over the country set up buddy benches. And she is spreading kindness around the world. “We recently got a bench in Ghana, Africa,” she says. “That was cool.”

Sammie reminds us that kids can help their community. Even small acts of kindness can be powerful. “You don’t have to be an adult to make a difference,” she says.

Sammie wrote a book. It is called Inspire the World: A Kid’s Journey to Making a Difference. It tells the story of her buddy benches. Sammie hopes her example will inspire others. “I used to be really, really shy,” she says. Building buddy benches gave her confidence. “I’m definitely more outgoing now.”

  • 24、There’s no doubt that our character has a profound effect on our future. What we must remember, however, is not merely how powerful character is in influencing our fate (命运), but how powerful we are in shaping our own character and, therefore, our own fate. Character may determine our fate, but character is not determined by fate.

It’s a common mistake to think of character as something that is fully formed and fixed very early in life. It calls to mind old proverbs like “A leopard can’t change its spots” and “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”

This perspective that our character is “etched in stone” is supported by a great deal of modern psychology emphasizing self-acceptance. As Popeye says, “I am what I am.” The hidden message is:Don’t expect me to be more, better, or different.

Ultimately, these views of humanity totally undervalue the lifelong potential for growth that comes with the power of reflection and choice.

How depressing it would be to believe that we can’t choose to be better, more honest, more respectful, more responsible, and more caring. None of us should give up the personal seeking to improve our character. Not because we’re bad, we don’t have to be sick to get better , but because we’re not as good as we could be.

There are so many things in life we can’t control, whether we’re beautiful or smart, whether we had good parents or bad, whether we grew up with affirmation or negation. It’s inspiring to remember that nothing but moral will power is needed to make us better.

No, it isn’t easy. But if we make a great effort to become more aware of the habits of heart and mind that drive our behavior, we can begin to place new emphasis on our higher values so that we become what we want our children to think we are.

【1】What is the best title of the passage?

    A. We shape our own character.

    B. Character determines our fate.

    C. Character is fully formed and fixed.

    D. We must meet what our children need.

    2The author agrees that  _____________.

    A. a leopard can't change its spots

    B. in life we must attach importance to self-acceptance

    C. we shouldn’t expect us to be more different

    D. character is not fully formed and fixed very early

3In the author’s opinion, which of the following is TRUE?

    A. We can’t choose to be better.

    B. We should seek to improve our character for we’re bad enough.

    C. We should value our lifelong potential for growth.

    D. We should make choices constantly.

4What do we need to improve ourselves according to the author?

    A. Our smartness.  B. Our will power.

    C. Our fate.    D. Our character.

5What can we infer from the passage?

    A. It is not difficult to improve ourselves.

    B. We must try our best to be as good as possible.

    C. Our children should copy our behavior.

    D. We should control as many things as possible in life.

Although my children are _________ now, with homes of their own. I’ve kept the magnet on our fridge door for the past twenty-five years. During that time, I’ve often found that the _________ has helped me see situations from a different perspective.

For example, a number of years ago, I was on my way to a farewell function with several colleagues. As we were leaving the office, we _________ our other colleague, Wendy, who had previously planned to attend the event with us. I asked Wendy if she wanted us to wait for her, and she responded in a fairly rude manner, _________ our invitation. One of my other colleagues was quite annoyed about Wendy’s behavior. “I don’t know why you even _________ to invite her,” she said. _________ on how tired Wendy appeared as she rushed away from us, I commented that perhaps we should just give Wendy a __________ and forgive her for being rude at the last minute. She was __________ having a bad day, and it wasn’t worth holding a grudge (怨恨) against her if we weren’t aware of what caused her unusual behavior.

A week later, I learned that when we came across Wendy, she was returning to the office from a medical appointment __________ she was told she had pancreatic cancer. She died a year later. Wendy wasn’t being rude to us; she had just received a very __________ diagnosis.
