二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、When times get tough, we all look for ways to cut back. When we’re hungry, we eat at home instead of going out. We take buses instead of taxis. And we wear our old designer jeans just a few months longer. With college expenses at all-time highs, high school students are eager to do anything to cut the cost of a university education.

One cost-cutting proposal is to allow college students to get a bachelor’s degree in three years instead of four. Educational institutions have been actively exploring ways to make the learning process more efficient. But there’s a question: Would the quality of undergraduate education suffer? Few US universities have formally approved a “three-year degree” model.

I doubt that mainstream North American colleges will carry out a three-year curriculum any time soon. For one thing, most universities already allow highly qualified students to graduate early by testing out of certain classes and obtaining a number of college credits. In addition, at famous universities, the committee who determine which courses are required and which courses are electives are unlikely to suddenly “throw out” one quarter of the required credits. Professors will resist “diluting(稀释)”the quality of the education they offer.

In my opinion, a quality four-year education is always superior to a quality three-year education. A college education requires sufficient time for a student to become skilled in their major and do coursework in fields outside their major. It is not a good idea to water down education, any more than it’s not a good idea to water down medicine. If we want to help students find their way through university, we should help them understand early on what knowledge and skills they need to have upon graduation. We should allow students to test out of as many courses as possible. We should give them a chance to earn money as interns(实习生)in meaningful part-time jobs that relate to their university studies, such as the five-year co-op program at Northeastern University.

【1】Which of the following can be the best title?

    A. It’s time to shorten the learning process

    B. Best learning takes place over time

    C. University education should be watered down

    D. College education calls for reform

    【2】In most US universities, ________ .

    A. some excellent students can graduate ahead of time

    B. college students are offered the co-op program

    C. electives’ credits make up one quarter of the required credits

    D. all students are required to finish four-year education before graduation

    【3】We can infer that ________ .

    A. the author is a college professor

    B. the author considers the university education quality very important

    C. the author thinks the cost of a university education is too high for people to afford

    D. the author pays special attention to the all-round development of college students

    【4The first paragraph serves as a(n) ________ .

  • 22、Electronic waste, also known as e-waste, consists of a discarded phones, printers, TVs, electric toothbrushes and many other electronic goods no longer in use.

A shocking 53. 6 million tons of electronic waste was generated worldwide in 2019 — less than a fifth of which was recycled, according to UN's Global E-waste Monitor 2020 report.

Of the total e-waste last year, Asia contributed the biggest amount — 46.4 per cent — followed by the Americas(24.4 percent), Europe (22.3 percent), Africa (5.4 percent) and Oceania (1.3 percent).

The combined heap of e-waste for 2019 averaged 7. 3 kg for every man, woman and child on Earth. The UK averaged the second-biggest in the world, at 23.9 kg, behind Norway, which averaged 26kg.

The report also reveals that just 17.4 percent of the e-waste was properly collected and recycled. E-waste is a health and environmental hazard (危害), containing hazardous substances such as mercury, which damages the human brain.

After a device is discarded and e-waste is warmed up, toxic chemicals are released into the air, damaging the atmosphere. E-waste in landfills can also seep (渗透) toxic materials into groundwater, affecting animals and plants.

Gold, silver, copper, and other high-value materials were collectively valued at $57 billion. However, they were mostly dumped or burned rather than being collected for treatment and reuse. In countries with developing markets, an increasing number of household electronics like refrigerators, air conditioners, and lamps are now being bought, leading to the rapid increase in e-waste. A global obsession with smart phones, which tend to be replaced by an updated model after a year, also helps build e-waste piles.

It's not that countries don't have policies to fight e-waste since 2014, the number of countries that have adopted a national e-waste policy has increased from 61 to 78, the report says. But advances are slow, enforcement (执行) is poor, and policies fail to encourage the collection and proper management of e-waste. The lack of effective policies around the world needs to be addressed (解决) as soon as possible.

【1】According to official figures, how much e-waste was recycled in 2019?

    A.53.6 million tons.

    B.10.8 million tons.

    C.9.3 million tons.

    D.20.1 million tons.

【2】E-waste does harm in many aspects EXCEPT ________________.

    A.health condition

    B.electronic products

    C.energy resources

    D.environmental protection

【3】What's the attitude toward reducing e-waste according to the report?

    A.Tolerant.

    B.Indifferent.

    C.Ambiguous.

    D.Critical.

【4】What's the main idea of this text?

    A.E-waste is increasing.

    B.E-waste is being reduced.

    C.E-waste is harmful to people.

    D.E-waste is being encouraged.

  • 23、Mum,it’s me.Hopefully, this Mothering Sunday you will get to hear those three words.I will,of course, try to phone you.I hope we will be able to speak for the allowed 10 minutes. But I suspect many inmates will be using the phone,so if I don’t call and if we don’t speak, then this is what I would have said:

It’s not your fault that I am here.I know that deep in your heart you have questioned whether my current circumstance is somehow your fault,if the reckless stupidity of my past is somehow a failure on your part.It is not.Only one person is to blame, only one person should hurt me.You have always taught me that when the room goes dark, you can wait for the lights to be switched back on or you can search in the dark and turn the light on yourself. You are my light. You always have been and always will be.There is nobody I admire more, nobody I have strived harder to please in my life, which is why my current failure hurts me so much.

I am so sorry that I will not be there to see you,but I want you to know that now,as always, you are here with me.In my darkest hours, and in the coldest loneliness of my past few months,my mind has so often wandered to the past,to when it was you and me and I have been able to smile.Yours is the strength that I draw upon.

A parent’s job is to make sure that they pass on the best of themselves to their children. You have done that.It is the inner you in me that will get me through this.

I have failed you so epically, but you have never failed me.If I think back to the tears I shed when Dad left, all those years ago,I see you through their misty glaze. You holding me and you telling me we’d be OK,and we will be.We are and always will be the best team.

Childhood heroes such as footballers, actors and rock stars are clichéD. If the job’s done right,a child’s heroes should be their parents you are mine. The strength you showed after the divorce from Dad to find your biological parents,to go to university and get your teaching qualifications,to begin your life again,is the strength that I draw on now.It is the belief in myself,it is the belief you have in me,that tells me that once I am released I can and will rebuild my life.I will make you proud again.I will make you happy to have me as your son.Yours is the will that gets me through every day.

I don’t believe you can judge a person for the mistakes they make,as we all make them, but you can judge them for what they do afterwards. And after this, when it is all over, you will still have a son with the same hopes and dreams. They have not diminishedIf you can dream it,then you have to believe it can happen right?

So this Mothering Sunday, please think back to that morning in the 80s,the first Mother’s Day without Dad,when a six-year-old me got up early and made breakfast for you.Do you remember it?Could you ever forget?A slice of bread a doorstep thick and a wedge of cheese equally dense. You didn’t have to eat it,but you did, chewing every dry mouthful.I know now why you forced yourself because it had been made with love.Well, things don’t change this year this letter is that bread and cheese (it sure has plenty of the cheese!).

I love you so much.I am sorry I have let you down, but you have taught me that we will always pick ourselves up and become better than we were before.Thank you for everything and this year, more than ever:

    Happy Mothering Sunday.

    Love,your son

  • 24、   If you live in a city, then it's easy to take internet connectivity for granted, but in more rural areas,it is a different story. Connectivity is uneven. As of 2018, the last time figures were published, seven per cent of rural households could not access broadband faster than lOmbps, despite the average speed in cities being 52mbps. Around the wcrld, there are still huge areas of territory, from deserts to oceans, that the internet is still yet to reach.

But the urban/rural divide could be set to disappear over the next few years thanks to rocket company Spacex and an astonishingly ambitious project called Starlink. The aim is to use thousands of satellites in orbit above our heads to deliver broadband-comparable internet speeds to literally everywhere on Earth, with no need for expensive wires, transmitters or other infrastructure on the ground. Claims have been made that it could reach speeds of up to lGbps, which is 20 times faster than what most British homes receive today.

Spacex will need to launch thousands of satellites to fully complete the network over the Earth. At present, there are only around 2,000 or so other satellites in Lower Earth Orbit in total. So if Starlink's ambitions are realised, it could double or triple the number of satellites in orbit.  So far, just over 700 have been successfully launched by the company and the first internet connections using the system are already being tested.

It is likely that over the next few years, Starlink could begin to offer ground-station satellite receivers that will connect to' the satellites and then, in turn. you could connect your computer or phone to that  However, not everyone loves Starlink. There is one drawback to having so many satellites in orbit around the Earth : they risk making life a lot more difficult for astronomers

Ultimately though, for all of the protestations, it is surely unavoidable that Starlink, will become an essential part of Earth's telecommunications backbone. The obvious usefulness of such a network 'would be just too exciting for governments, businesses ,and individuals to resist. The urban/rural digital divide will no longer exist.

【1】The word "uneven" in Para. 1 is closest in meaning to         .

    A.various

    B.slow

    C.accessible

    D.unbalanced

    【2】What's the purpose of Starlink?

A.To launch satellites in orbit over our head.

B.To use satellites to deliver internet connection to almost the whole world.

C.To reach speeds of up to 1Gbps.

    D.To offer ground-station satellite receivers.

【3】What's the author's attitude toward Starlink?

    A.Skeptical.

    B.Favorable.

    C.Disapproving.

    D.Ambiguous.

【4】What can we infer from the passage?

A.Spacex has launched l,400 satellites in orbit.

B.We can have phones directly connect to the satellites now

    C.All people don't love Starlink.

D.Governments, businesses and individuals resist such a network.
