  • 21、Everyone has heard the phrase, “giving up is not an option”. Many disregard it and do not believe in it. But this small yet effective phrase gives a strong message. There will always be something that interrupts or causes inconvenience in the journey to achieve the dreams. But that should not drive one away from the path that they are on. Fitting the context perfectly is the story of Ian William.

Popularly known as the “Social Golfer", Ian William is an accountant, lecturer, author, and a former golf player. He dreamed of playing golf at childhood. He would often observe players playing from a distance. He worked hard and changed his financial limitations. Then he began practicing in various golf matches. Due to his devotion and love for the sport, he picked up the techniques quickly and soon began playing as a professional. He also dreamed of participating in the Senior Golf Tour in the coining year.

However, in 1996, Ian was diagnosed with a tumor in the left part of his brain, which affected his hearing from the right side and damaged his balance nerve. He underwent two surgeries in 1997 with a smile and a hope to be cured. Although the surgeries were successful, Ian caught meningitis while recovering from it. Apart from being hopeful and optimistic, there was no other way Ian could cope with the situation.

Just as things had begun to normalize, in 2006, Ian's body was affected by a major stroke. This stroke numbed the left side of his body. His life-long dream of participating in a golf tournament could not be fulfilled anymore.

Ian took his time to recover and came back even stronger. He wanted to inspire millions with his journey and decided to share his experiences through a book. Ian has now published his 3rd book Still Crazy After All These Years in 2020.

  • 22、With the help of new devices on mice, scientists are using light to switch nerve cells on and off in mice’s brains to explore the animals’ social behavior, a new study shows.

The new devices rely on optogenetics(光遗传学), a technique in which researchers use bursts of light to stimulate or control the brain nerve cells, often using tailored viruses to genetically correct cells so they respond to light. Scientists have applied optogenetics to explore neural(神经的) circuits in mice and other lab animals to come to a conclusion on how they might work in humans. Optogenetic devices often feed light to neurons via fiber-optic cables, but such things can influence natural behaviors and social interactions. While scientists recently developed implantable(可植入的) wireless optogenetic devices, these depend on relatively simple remote controls or limited sets of preprogrammed instructions.

These new fully implantable optogenetic devices can enable more complex research. Specifically, the researchers can adjust each device’s programming during the course of experiment. “So you can target what an animal does in a much more complex way,” says Genia Kozorovitskiy, a researcher at Northwestern University.

These devices are battery-free, wirelessly powered by the same high-frequency radio waves used to remotely control the intensity, duration and timing of the light pulses. The devices also allow scientists to control four different neural circuits in an animal simultaneously, thanks to LEDs that give out four colors——blue, green, yellow and red——instead of just one.

The widely available wireless technology used in this work, the same now used in contactless payment with credit cards, could allow broad adoption across the neuroscience community “without extensive specialized hardware”, says Philipp Gutruf at the University of Arizona. “That means that we might see these devices in many labs in the near future, enabling new discoveries.”

【1】What’s scientists’ purpose of using optogenetics?

A.To control humans’ brain nerve cells.

B.To account for humans’ social interactions.

C.To figure out how neural circuits affect humans.

D.To correct tailored viruses entering the human bodies.

【2】What does the underlined word “simultaneously” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Once in a while.

    B.At the same time.

    C.By ones and twos.

    D.On a regular basis.

【3】What can we infer from Philipp Gutruf’s words?

    A.The function of wireless technology.

B.The promising future of the devices.

C.The novel application of the devices.

    D.The development of wireless technology.

【4】Which can be the best title for the text?

A.Scientists Can Kill Mice with Light

    B.Scientists Control Humans’ Social Interactions

C.Scientists Control Social Behavior of Mice with New Devices

D.Scientists Can Record Human Neural Circuits with New Devices

  • 23、What good language learners do

There’s no such thing as being born “good at languages.” However, there are people who learn languages well, but that has nothing to do with them being naturally good at it. 【1】

Good Language Learners Aren’t Afraid to Take risks

A Dutch friend of mine speaks English, Spanish, German, French, and, of course, Dutch. I asked her what she thought was most important in learning a language. She answered immediately: “Courage.”

Good language learners face the fear of making mistakes. 【2】 For example, trying out different ways of learning vocabulary until finding a way that suits them best. They are not afraid of making mistakes because they know that with every mistake, they gain a small victory toward improving their language.

    【3】

You may already have heard or read about learning styles. The idea is that everyone has a style of learning that suits them best. You want to figure out how you learn most easily and apply your preferred learning styles to your language learning.

When you learn something new, do you like to talk about it or think about it? Or do you get new information in pictures or words? Do you find it easier to learn facts or concepts? These are just a few of the questions that help you discover how you best learn.

Good Language Learners Are Actively Involved in Their Learning Process.

Good language learners take responsibility for their own learning. Besides regular language classes, they create opportunities to use the language. 【4】

Good language learners are independent. They do not expect to learn English only by sitting in the classroom, and they do not rely on the teacher for all of the learning. They are organized and active. They look for creative ways both inside and outside the classroom to try out what they have learned.

Good Language Learners Try to Think in the Language.

It may not be easy at first, but thinking in English is worth cultivating as a vital skill that will improve all areas of your language learning. To help you think in English, carry on a dialogue with yourself in English when walking along, sitting on a bus, or taking a break from other studies. 【5】

    A.They experiment and take risks.

B.Use English whenever and wherever you can.

C.They push themselves to speak and try to become fluent.

D.Good language learners find a style of learning that suits them.

E.Good language learners try to figure out how the language works.

F.It has to do with their attitude and the way they approach learning.

G.They know practice is very important and are willing to devote their time to it.

  • 24、   After beating bone cancer, Hayley Arceneaux thinks rocketing into orbit on SpaceX’s first private flight should be no problem at all. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital announced the 29-year-old doctor’s assistant will rocket into space later this year.

Arceneaux, a former patient at St. Jude, will become the youngest American in space, beating NASA record-holder Sally Ride by over two years. She will travel with businessman Jared Isaacman, who is using the spaceflight he bought to raise money for charity. Two other yet-to-be-chosen space flyers will join them. Arceneaux will be the first person to launch with a prosthesis an artificial device that replaces a missing or injured part of the body. When she was 10, Arceneaux had an operation at St. Jude to replace her knee and a piece of metal was put in her left leg. She still limps and has occasional leg pain.

“My battle with cancer really prepared me for space travel,” she recently told The Associated Press. “It made me tough, and then also I think it really taught me to expect the unexpected and go along for the ride.” Arceneaux wants to show her young patients and other cancer survivors that “the sky is not even the limit anymore.” “It’s going to mean so much to these kids to see a survivor in space.” she said.

Isaacman announced his space flight on February 1, promising to raise $200 million for St. Jude. As the flight’s self-appointed commander, he offered one of the four seats aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft to St. Jude. The hospital chose Arceneaux from among its many workers who had once been patients. The idea was that one of them could represent the new generation, noted Rick Shadyac, president of St. Jude’s financing organization.

Arceneaux was at home in Memphis, Tennessee, when she got a surprising call in January. She was asked if she would represent St. Jude in space. As a lifelong space fan who loves adventures, Arceneaux has traveled widely and loves roller coasters. Isaacman, who flies fighter airplanes for fun, considers her a perfect fit. The launch is planned for this fall at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, with the spacecraft orbiting Earth for two to four days.

【1】Which statement is true about Hayley Arceneaux?

A.She works where she used to be a patient.

    B.She is an adventure hater.

C.She is the youngest American in space.

D.She is the first woman space flyer.

  • 26、请阅读下面短文。并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

The national box office set a record in 2017, almost 56 billion yuan, up 13 percent from 2016. Last year, there were 92 films whose revenue(收入)exceeded 100 million yuan each including 51 Chinese films. About 1.62 billion tickets were bought, up 18 percent year-on-year. In 2017, the Chinese film industry produced 798 dramas, 32 animation films and 44 documentaries in all. Fifteen films earned more than 1 billion yuan each at the box office, up from nine in 2016.

In the coming days, records will likely be broken and history will be made as China’s film industry appears to be on the turning point of a new era, industry insiders said. This year, the number of new film releases, box-office earnings, and even stock-market performance of shares listed entertainment companies and expected to be higher, they said.

Filmgoers’ reviews have had an increasingly significant impact on the box office more than other factors such as the participation of pop celebrities in pre-release promotions, a media professor said. Also, viewers are no longer getting influenced by big names alone. They don’t care whether the film is Chinese, Hollywood, European, or Indian, as long as it has substance(内容). Even a low-budget film with little-known cast and crew could emerge as a hit, industry observers said.
