  • 21、Dear Audrey,

You are much older now, and hopefully wiser, although sometimes that’s not the case. You have probably forgotten about me.

I’m 12-year-old you struggling with anxiety, hating online learning, in this terrible Coronavirus(冠状病毒).

I’m writing a letter to you that I hope you read every year on New Year’s Day, or New Year’s Eve.

I’ve come from 2020 to remind you not to forget. I am sitting on my bed right now, tears still on my face from a fight with my mom (I love her more than anything or anyone, but we’ve spent too much time together), and looking at the light blue masks hanging on the hooks next to the door in my kitchen. In a way, it still feels like March, when this whole crazy thing started. I’m sick of it.

I am begging you to remember. I didn’t get to spend Thanksgiving with my beloved grandparents, when I’d been waiting so long to act normally with them. Now, it looks like I won’t be spending Christmas with them normally either. In America (where I live), the Coronavirus numbers are higher than they’ve ever been. I am hoping and am going to pray for a Christmas miracle, but I have my doubts because I hoped for an Easter miracle and that didn’t happen.

I am struggling and would do anything to get out of 2020 and this Coronavirus, to see my friends and family normally. You are able to do that. You have what I want so badly. So please, I urge you to enjoy your life, your friends, your family, your experiences.

Remember — everything is replaceable and unimportant, but people are the only true thing that matters in this modern-day world.

Love your life, and be filled with joy this year.

    Sincerely,

You, aged 12, Audrey in 2020, the Pandemic Year.

C.She has to stay at home with her mom.

D.She couldn’t spend Thanksgiving with her grandparents.

【2】What does the writer want badly?

    A.Meeting people normally.

    B.Praying for a Christmas miracle.

    C.Going to the future.

    D.Continuing online learning.

【3】What is the writer’s purpose of the letter?

A.To remind her future self to treasure the people and enjoy life.

B.To complain that her present life is terrible.

C.To tell her future self that she is sick of the Coronavirus.

D.To persuade her future self to remember the Coronavirus.

  • 22、By March 2018, Cape Town’s biggest reservoir (储水库) had dropped to just 11 percent of its capacity. The city was close to turning off the taps. “I’ve never experienced anything like it,” said Samantha Reinders. Like everyone else here, Reinders learned to wash, cook and drink using just the official daily limit—50 liters. Posters were put up everywhere, telling 400,000 people in Cape Town how far the reservoirs had dropped. They also showed the countdown until “Day Zero”. Finally, in June, the rains returned. People ran outside to feel the water flow on their faces. Cape Town’s water shortage was over, at least temporarily. “Day Zero” had never quite arrived.

Afterward, an international group of scientists analyzed Cape Town’s drought and water shortage. They studied computer models and rainfall records. Finally, they came to a conclusion: Climate change wasn’t the culprit (罪魁祸首) of the drought. It hadn’t begotten the drought. But it had tripled (使成三倍) the chance that a drought would occur.

Friederike Otto is a climate scientist at Oxford University in England and lead author of that study. The risk of drought could triple again by the end of the 21st century, she said. That’s when global temperatures are predicted to rise another 1 degree Celsius.

Co-author Piotr Wolski said that better planning could help in the future. The area could manage its water reservoirs more carefully. People could fix leaky dams and make use of a variety of water sources instead of only reservoirs. “Drought may or may not translate into a crisis (危机),” he pointed out.

In many ways, said Reinders, the water crisis made a change to the city. Most people, across race, gender, religion and class, did their best to save water and help their neighbors out. And most were sticking to the water-saving habits they had learned. “I think this is the new normal. And that is pretty much the word on the street,” said Reinders.

【1】What does Paragraph 1 show about Cape Town?

    A.It experienced a severe drought.

    B.It was carrying out a water-saving campaign.

C.It needed one more reservoir urgently.

D.It was repairing its water-supply lines.

【2】What does the underlined word “begotten” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Caused

    B.Stopped

    C.Expanded

    D.Worsened

【3】What’s Piotr Wolski’s suggestion on the water crisis?

    A.Never too late to mend.

B.Be aware of the potential leaky dams.

    C.Save for a rainy day.

D.Make full use of the water reservoirs.

【4】What’s the main purpose of the last paragraph?

A.To call on people to show kindness to others.

B.To stress people’s efforts to save water.

C.To encourage people to stick to their good habits.

D.To show the beneficial sides of the water crisis.

  • 23、 The Sieferts are the kind of environmentally conscious family who has solar panels atop their home. They use timers on their kids' showers and have planted drought-tolerant landscaping. But they feel kind of guilt.“I haven’t thought about the pool as much as I probably should,” said Annette Siefert.

As California's drought worsens, swimming pools have become a target for those who think the classic backyard greens waste water. Some water districts have banned new pools from being filled and have limited how much water existing pools can use.

But some of those agencies are walking back the rules as they make a surprising discovery: Pools aren't the water wasters some have made them out to be.Analyses by various water districts, along with scientific studies, conclude that pools and their surrounding landscapes use about the same amount of water as a lawn(草坪) of the same size.Over time, pools might even use less water. With pool covers, experts say water evaporation(蒸发) can be cut by almost half, making pools significantly less wasteful than grass and about as efficient as drought-tolerant landscaping.

Facing complaints over a recent ban on filling pools, the Santa Margarita Water District conducted its own water-use analysis. It found that pools require thousands of gallons of water to fill originally, but they use about 8,000 gallons less water than a traditional landscape after that.By the third year, the analysis found, the savings add up, and a pool's water use falls below that of a lawn.

Water agencies such as the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power have come to similar conclusions.Armed with new information, Santa Margarita Water District officials will reconsider their ban next week.

“We want to respect the people's rights to use their possessions. There are many families we know that have saved for pools,” said Jonathan Volzke, spokesman for the 155,000-customer district.“But at the same time, the reality around us is that we're in the third year of a serious drought, and we don't know if we're in the third year of a three-year drought or the third year of a 10-year drought.”

【1】Annette Siefert feels guilty mainly because of ________.

    A.being a typical water waster

B.the water-use of their swimming pool

C.her control over her kids' showers at home

D.the construction of the drought-tolerant landscaping

2According to analyses and scientific studies, a swimming pool ________.

A.had better be filled up in the beginning

    B.becomes more efficient against drought

C.isn't what people think to be wasteful of water

D.consumes more water than a lawn of the same size

3What does Jonathan Volzke try to express in the last paragraph?

A.He expects the serious drought to come to an end.

B.He thinks highly of those who have saved for pools.

C.He tries to hold the right to use the swimming pools.

D.He appeals for reasonable use of the swimming pools.

4What would be the best title for the passage?

    A.Water Crisis in California

    B.Strict Ban on Filling Pools

    C.Pools—A Big Factor During Drought?

    D.The Sieferts—Real Environmentalists?

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇 60 词左右的内容概要。

Teenagers' fitness is now a major concern and physical exercise is very important. It reduces stress and improves fitness. Exercise makes your body strong and helps you to keep the right body weight. Sports scientists offer the following advice to teenagers: First, find out your present level of fitness. Then you can design a programme that will help you become healthier.

There are three levels of fitness that need a change of lifestyle. 'Overweight' means that the person gets very little exercise and often has a serious weight problem. 'Inactive' means that the person does not join in many physical activities, but is not seriously overweight. 'Active' refers to people who take part in sports and other physical activities, but do not have a high fitness level.

According to experts, overweight teenagers should work out to keep healthy. Ride a bike, play volleyball or basketball for a while, and go for a twenty-minute walk each day. All these will help to burn calories. Inactive teenagers should do similar activities, but add some bending and stretching exercises, such as push-ups and sit-ups, starting with twenty of each a day. Inactive people can take a little more exercise than overweight people because their bodies are stronger. The same rule is also suitable for active teenagers.

Experts also suggest one hour a week or more on running and other forms of intensive exercise, together with fifteen minutes a day spent on stretching and bending activities. They are really important in order to prevent injuries. Some weight-training and other body-strengthening exercises could also be planned in the programme in order to increase the person's strength.
