  • 21、From Zzz to Aha!

When you are stuck on a problem, sometimes it is best to stop thinking about it — consciously, anyway. Research has shown that taking a break or a nap can help the brain create paths to a solution. Now a new study expands on the effect of this so-called incubation by using sound cues to focus the sleeping mind on a targeted problem.

When humans sleep, parts of the brain replay certain memories, strengthening and transforming them. About a decade ago researchers developed a technique, called targeted memory reactivation (再激活) (TMR), aimed at further strengthening selected memories: when a sound becomes associated with a memory and is later played during sleep, that memory gets reactivated.

In a study published last November in Psychological Science, scientists tested whether revisiting the memory of a puzzle during sleep might also improve problem-solving. About 60 participants visited the laboratory before and after a night of sleep. In an evening session, they attempted different puzzles, with a distinct music clip repeating in the background for each, until they had worked on 6 puzzles they could not solve. Overnight they wore electrodes (电极条) to detect slow-wave sleep, a state of deep dreamless sleep, which may be important for memory enhancement — and a device played the sounds related to 3 of the 6 unsolved puzzles. The next day, back at the lab, the participants attempted the 6 puzzles again. All told, the subjects solved 32% of the sound-cued puzzles compared with 21% of the untargeted puzzles— an increase of more than 50 percent.

“These are super cool results. Now we need to go further and try to understand them by firstly replicating (复制) them and secondly trying to work out the component processes that are actually being influenced,” says Penny Lewis, a psychologist at Cardiff University.

Beyond providing new evidence that humans restructure memories while sleeping, the research may have practical implications. In a futuristic world, maybe TMR could help us use sleep to work on our problems. Sleep-monitoring technology is increasingly accessible — and even without gadgets, prospective solvers can focus on important problems before bed.

【1】What can we learn about TMR?

A.It can be used to help people improve their sleep quality.

B.It is aimed at removing selected memories.

C.It replays a sound to get related memories reactivated in sleep.

D.It is a technique published in Psychological Science last November.

【2】According to the experiment, what may be the reason for the increase of puzzle solving?

    A.The specific music.

    B.The electrodes.

    C.Slow-wave sleep.

    D.The targeted puzzles.

【3】What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.The participants of the study.

    B.The researchers of the study.

    C.The results of the study.

    D.The 6 unsolved puzzles.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.Sleeping can help humans restructure memories.

B.Listening to music can strengthen and transform memories.

C.Taking a break or a nap can help the brain create solutions.

D.Reactivating remembered problems during sleep can bring solutions.

  • 22、Samsung

Saying that Samsung makes great tablets might sound strange to someone not too familiar with their devices, but the company has made some interesting strides with tablets. And much like their phones, Samsung has a wide variety in their products, with the very affordable Tab A7/A8, to the high-end flagship S8 ultra. So if you’re team Android as opposed to Apple, Samsung is probably the way to go.

Best tablet: Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra

    Microsoft

Microsoft has traditionally been a major player in computing so it’s no shock that they also make well-designed and more than capable tablets — the Microsoft Surface. With the idea of the Surface tablets being a 2-in-1 device, a tablet that can functionally run like a laptop, running windows, and featuring basically the same processors that you’d find in a laptop.

And with an additional keyboard, great displays and long battery life, the Surface tablets make for great machines for work or play respectively.

Best tablet: Microsoft Surface Pro 8

    Amazon

Amazon does indeed make tablets and, they’re capable too. Amazon’s Fire HD tablets are firmly in the budget tablet range but that doesn’t make them less capable. In terms of size, they range from seven up to ten inches and even include a kids’ tablet for the young ones. So if you prefer tablets over ten inches, you may be wanting to look elsewhere.

But all in all, they’re a good shout for a first-time tablet buyer that isn’t looking to spend a few hundred pounds on a device, but still wants to watch videos or browse the web on the go.

Best tablet: Amazon Fire HD 10 plus

  • 23、The first solar cell capable of powering everyday electrical equipment was made in the 1950s at Bell Labs in New Jersey. Back then the silicon-based (基于硅的) panels were hugely expensive and turned just 6% of sunlight into electricity. Since then, costs have come down dramatically and today’s silicon solar cells can tur up to 22% of sunlight into power. But they’re nearly maxed out in terms of efficiency. Now, perovskites (钙钛矿) offer the potential for dramatic increases in power output, and they could ultimately replace silicon altogether.

Rescarchers at Oxford PV, a company spun out of the University of Oxford, made a major breakthrough in 2018. By coating silicon with perovskites they achieved 28% efficiency. The company believes it can eventually reach 40%, or higher. “If we want to make all new power generation about solar photovoltaics (光伏), then we need to keep driving the price down,”Henry Snaith, professor of physics at the University of Oxford and co-founder of Oxford PV,said.“One way to do that is to keep pushing the efficiency or power output up, and this is where perovskites really come into play.”

Perovskites were discovered in 1839. Oxford PV uses a synthetic (合成的) version, made from inexpensive materials that are present on the Earth in large quantities, while other companies use variations of the original mineral, collectively called perovskites. As well as improved solar efficiency, they work better than silicon in the shade, on cloudy days or even indoors. Perovskites can be printed using an inkjet (喷墨的) printer and can be as thin as wallpaper. Oxford PV hopes perovskites will eventually replace silicon entirely.

Last month, Saule Technologies’new factory in Warsaw began printing perovskite solar cells using inkjet printers. Early next year, it will start supplying Swedish construction company Skanska Group.“The material is set to be a game changer in the energy field, because it works in every lighting condition,”said Saule Technologies co-founder Olga Malinkiewicz.

【1】What is the biggest disadvantage of silicon-based panels?

    A.They are incredibly expensive.

B.They are easy to abandon totally.

C.They are relatively low in power output.

D.They have only existed for about 50 years.

【2】What attitude does Snaith have towards perovskites?

    A.Favorable.

    B.Cautious.

    C.Opposed.

    D.Ambiguous.

【3】Why can perovskites possibly replace silicon entirely?

A.They can be as thin as paper.

B.They are rarely seen on the Earth.

C.They can be printed with 3-D printers.

D.They perform well in poor lighting conditions.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.The cost of perovskite solar cells.

B.A new way to replace perovskites.

    C.The applications of solar photovoltaics.

D.A potential way to increase solar power output.

  • 24、   The FDA is the common name for the Food and Drug Administration. It is a government agency that makes consumer goods safe. It regulates food and the food supply. It also controls diet supplement. The FDA also makes sure that drugs and medical devices are safe and effective.

For drugs and medical machines to be accepted, they must go through a lengthy process. There are many strict tests. First, anything that humans use must be tested on animals. This may take up to 6 years. Then, it must be tested with a few people. Testing on 15 to 20 people can last up to a year and a half. Third, a mid-sized group (100 to 500 people) is used. This often takes two years. Then a large group is tested over 3 years. Of 5,000 drugs discovered, only 5 enter trials. Of that, only one passes on to the market.

Food supplements like ginseng (人参) follow a different path. The FDA does not pre-test them as they do for drugs. The agency only controls these products if they are unsafe but are already being sold. Two exceptions are baby and medical food. Because those that use them are not strong, the FDA is more careful with these products.

Labeling(标签) is a major focus. A label must show what a product is for. For drugs, labels should say the name of the drug and what it is used for. It should also detail who should take it and list any side effects. It needs to detail directions for pregnant women, children, or old people. It also needs to detail safety information.

The FDA protects the public from harm. It achieves this through controls and labeling. It has standards for effectiveness in medical products. It also has standards for how information is shared.

1According to the passage, how many drugs make it to the market?

A.Nearly five thousand. B.One of five thousand.

C.Five thousand only. D.Over five thousand.

2The author uses food supplements as an example of which of the following?

A.Things the FDA avoids B.Things the FDA controls

C.Things the FDA buys D.Things the FDA refuses

3Which of the following can be inferred from Paragraph 4 about labeling?

A.It is a necessary way to protect the public.

B.It does not matter if people read the labels or not.

C.It is only good if people can find the label.

D.It has no use if doctors tell people what to do

4Which of the following is NOT discussed in the passage?

    A.Requirements for labeling

    B.The acceptance of medical supplies

    C.Why pregnant women take drugs

D.Controls for baby and medical food

My grandparents’ house is in Rosewood and they have a small house with a lovely garden. “Grandpa has gone to visit his brother and Grandma is staying alone at home,” I said to my friends Melissa and Rocky, both of whom were more than willing to go to give her a surprise. After we got ready, Dad drove us there.

When we arrived, my grandma was so surprised and happy. She gave me a big hug. “Won’t you introduce me to your friends?” said Grandma.

My friends were introduced and Grandma gave them each a warm hug. Dad stayed for a while and left for his own work. Then we enjoyed talking and playing in the garden. Lunch was served. Grandma prepared a tasty meal of vegetable soup chicken sandwiches and strawberry ice cream for us. After lunch, we sat in the garden in a semicircle facing Grandma, and listened to her telling interesting stories

We were interrupted by a sudden and urgent knock on the door. I jumped up to open the door. It was Janet, Grandma’s neighbor.

“Mrs. White, my daughter Eva went to walk our dog Bruno, and hasn’t returned home yet. She always comes back in ten minutes or so. I’m very worried that something has happened to her. She usually walks on the main street outside our home but I can’t see her anywhere. I called out her name, but there was no answer. I have hurt my foot and can hardly walk, so I want to ask you for help,” said Janet.

“Aunty Janet, please don’t worry. My friends and I will go and look for Eva. I’m sure we will find her soon,” I said.

Grandma stayed with Janet and looked after her. We left the garden immediately to search for Eva and Bruno. We called Eva’s name and looked everywhere but couldn’t find her. I thought we would have to go back in vain.

    Paragraph 1:

We were about to head home when we heard low and weak sounds nearby.

    Paragraph 2:

We pulled up Bruno and then Eva.
