  • 27、   Global warming always reminds us of rising sea levels and extreme weather, but it may actually bring other less obvious, long-term changes. How might they influence our lives in the future? Let’s take a look.

    Making food less nutritious

The more serious global warming is, the more greenhouse gases the atmosphere contains. According to Science Advances, foods are found to contain low levels of key nutrition when they’re exposed to high levels of greenhouse gases. “If we do nothing, there is potential for negative impacts on human health,” US health researcher Kristie Ebi told the Washington Post.

    Ending racial differences

With rising temperatures, more lands in the world will turn into deserts. Many people will be forced to leave their homelands and live elsewhere. In turn, this could mean that the appearance of people could become more similar. “In just 125 years, there may be far fewer people with really dark skin or pale skin,” US biologist Scott Solomon told the Daily Mail. “More and more people will have olive and brown-colored complexions (肤色).” More importantly, this could mean racism may become a thing of the past.

    Making insects hungrier

Human beings or other mammals can keep a stable body temperature, while insects usually adapt their body temperature based on the environment. According to Science Daily, insects will become hungrier and need more food in warmer surroundings. That’s because a higher body temperature can increase insects’ metabolism (新陈代谢). “In addition, warmer temperatures will increase the reproductive rates of insects,” Curtis Deutsch, a professor at Washington University in the US, told Science Daily.

    Helping scientists find historic sites

Due to global warming, the UK experienced an extremely hot and dry summer last year. As a result, many grassy areas in the country turned yellow or even dried out completely. Because of this, many unusual and interesting patterns hidden in some of these areas were exposed. After studying some of these patterns, scientists found Neolithic (新石器时代的) monuments and a Roman farm, which are believed to date back to around 5,000 years ago.

1What is this passage mainly about?

A.The harmful effects of global warming.

B.The possible causes of global warming.

C.Some ways to slow down global warming.

D.The influences of global warming on our lives.

2Which skin color will be more common in the future according to Solomon?

    A.Brown. B.Pale. C.White. D.Dark.

3What was found in Britain because of the hot and dry weather?

    A.An ancient farm with patterns.

    B.Unusual patterns in some areas.

    C.New landscapes with monuments.

    D.Grassy areas with different colors.

  • 28、Poaching (偷猎) and habitat loss have threatened Africa’s two species of elephants, taking them closer toward the edge of extinction, according to a new report released by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Before this update, Africa’s elephants were grouped together and were evaluated as vulnerable (脆弱的) by the IUCN. This is the first time the two species have been classified separately. In the past, elephants were mostly considered as either Asian elephants or African elephants. Forest and savanna elephants were typically classified as subspecies of African elephants.

The African forest elephant is now listed as critically endangered and the African savanna elephant as endangered. The number of African forest elephants fell by more than 86% over a 31-year assessment period. The population of African savanna elephants dropped by at least 60% over the last 50 years, according to the IUCN, which tracks the assessment risk of the world’s animals. Africa currently has an estimated 415,000 elephants, counting the two species together.

Both elephant species experienced significant population decreases because of poaching. Although it peaked in 2011, illegal hunting still happens and continues to threaten elephant populations. African elephants also face continued habitat loss as their land is converted for agriculture or other uses.

There is some good conservation news, the IUCN points out. Anti-poaching measures, combined with better land use planning to support better human-wildlife relationships, have helped conservation efforts. Some forest elephant population figures have stabilized in well-managed area as in Gabon and the Republic of Congo and savanna population figures have remained stable or have been growing, particularly in the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area in southern Africa.

But with persistent demand for ivory and increasing human pressures on Africa’s wild lands, concern for Africa’s elephants is high, and the need to creatively conserve and wisely manage these animals and their habitats is severer than ever.

【1】Which of the following can describe African forest elephants?

    A.Their situation is terrible.

B.They are divided into two kinds.

C.They’re under threat due to poaching only.

D.Their population has grown in Gabon.

【2】What does the underlined word “converted” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Expanded.

    B.Accumulated.

    C.Transformed.

    D.Classified.

【3】What’s the author’s attitude to the present situation of African elephants?

    A.Uninterested.

    B.Worried.

    C.Uncertain.

    D.Disappointed.

【4】What’s the main idea of the text?

    A.Poaching should be stopped.

B.Poaching and habitat loss will make elephants extinct.

C.More and more African elephants are being illegally hunted.

D.Africa’s elephant species are now endangered and should be protected.

  • 29、   I totally relate to the need many parents have in wanting their children to be special, unique, talented, and amazing. I think my child is all of those things too. Of course I do. But do we really need to be measuring and comparing the academic achievements of kids as young as 3, 4, and 5 years old?

These days, I often find it difficult to have a casual conservation with other parents of children who are only in preschool without being told. about how their kid is phenomenally (显著地)"advanced” in writing or that they're already reading at a 2nd-grade level.

I mean, obviously that's great news if you've been led to believe your child possesses a remarkable talent because they're catching on well in preschool. However. I can't help but notice that the height of parental bragging (夸耀)has reached too high both in real life and on social media.

I realize I'm probably pessimistic, but I'm afraid that we're placing our children on a ridiculously steep pedestal (基座)at too young of an age and we're really just giving our children a higher place to eventually fall from.

The ever increasing loads of homework being sent home in preschool and kindergarten seem like overkill as well. The most important skill young kids in preschool and kindergarten should be learning are social skills, in my opinion.

So, while I think it's great that your child may be very "advanced” for their age, I sincerely hope your child is happy, well-adjusted, surrounded by kind friends, and praised for so much more than how quickly they can read or write.

1What does the author realize when she's talking with other parents of children in preschool?

A.They're very proud of their parenting.

B.They like showing off their children's academic achievements.

C.They spend a lot of time teaching their children to write.

D.They like comparing their children with themselves.

2Paragraph 4 mainly shows that the author is ________.

    A.ambiguous B.jealous C.optimistic D.concerned

3Which of the following would the author agree with?

A.Parents shouldn't want their children to be unique.

B.It’s very important that kids in preschool learn writing.

C.Kids in preschool should be mainly taught social skills.

D.Preschool education will hardly affect kids in the long run.

4What would be the best title for the text?

    A.Stop wasting your kid's talents

B.Stop teaching your kid to read and write

C.Stop telling others your kid is "advanced”

D.Stop scolding your kid for poor academic performance

  • 30、For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict between ________ countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I ________ and what you do?

Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. ________, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for ________ it. From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their children’s complete ________. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except ________. Both feel trapped.

In this article, I’ll describe three no-win ________ that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the ________. The first is quarrels over ________ things. Examples include the colour of the teen’s hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child’s ________ to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends.

Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the ________ is—politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg—the ________ of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered a(n) ________—someone who actually knows something—and therefore to command ________. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they ________ more than the other, they’ll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.

    THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

    In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

We h2 these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created e3, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable R4, that among these are life, L5, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, g 6 are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the P 7 to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, l8 its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such f9, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

TP recorded 36 deadly accidents which resulted in 38 deaths, or an increase of three severe accidents and four deaths, respectively, compared with the same period last year. The rise was due mainly to victims who were motorcyclists and vehicle passengers. • 39、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

There is nothing unusual about a single language dying. Communities have come and gone throughout history, and with them their language. But what is happening today is extraordinary, judged by the early standards. According to the best estimates(估计), about half of the total 6,000 languages are going to die out in the next century. On average, there is a language dying out somewhere in the world every two weeks or so.

It is too late to do anything to help many languages, where the speakers are too few or too old, and where the community is too busy just trying to survive to care about their language. But many languages are not in such a serious position. Often, where languages are seriously endangered, there are things that can be done to give new life to them.

There are some famous cases showing what can be done — Welsh alone among the Celtic languages, is not only stopping its steady decline towards extinction(灭绝) but showing signs of real growth. Two Language Acts protect the status of Welsh, and its presence is increasingly in evidence wherever you travel in Wales. Maori in New Zealand has been maintained by a system of so-called "language nest", which provides children under five with a setting in which they are frequently exposed to the language. The hope is that the children will in turn become role models to a new generation of young children as they grow older. If good descriptions and materials are available, even extinct languages can be saved. Kaurna from South Australia, is an example. This language had been extinct for about a century, but had been quite well documented. So, when a strong movement grew for its revival(复活), it was possible to bring it back from death.

It is too soon to predict the future of these revived languages, but in some parts of the world they are attracting the very range of positive attitudes and grass roots support. In such unexpected but heart-warming ways we might see the grand total of languages slightly increased.
