  • 22、When Liberia was my home, they called it sweet. Sweet was the word I remembered the most during the war. When I was five, my father, two sisters and I fled from Monrovia, the capital city of Liberia, and headed north on foot among panicked masses of criers - a journey that ended in a village where we hid from flying bullets (子弹). Every dawn, my sisters and I joined my father and covered the pages of his small journal with words. My favorite word to write was “sweet,” one that had the power to numb the reality of our 6-month abandonment by peace and civilization.

Eventually, we were considered the lucky ones: part of the wave of refugees who left Liberia in 1990 to settle in America. My mother studied at Columbia University at the time, and we made our new home in her dormitory while awaiting her graduation. My father who left early in the mornings looked for work or news of a possible return to Liberia, only to return home with nothing to give us but new words to write in notebooks. He quickly found that the education he received in Liberia was not good enough for an engineering job in the United States. So he took whatever job he could find to make sure we always had food on the table - and books.

In 2011, I founded a children’s book publishing company: One Moore Book. It provides children’s literature for the children of countries with low literacy (识字) rates and underrepresented cultures by publishing culturally relevant books that have something meaningful to say to them. My hope is to give children the peace I was given through the words of my father, by allowing them to see themselves in literature. I also think it is important to provide books about foreign countries to children in the United States, to increase the overall awareness of the world outside them.

I will never be able to give my father back the twenty years he spent working to educate us, or the home and life in Liberia he lost. I repay his sacrifice (牺牲) by honoring the education he fought for and offering my art to the world, with stories that make the histories of my people come alive, and with words to live by.

【1】What was the author’s family’s life like in Liberia?

  • 23、Have you ever chatted with a friend about buying a certain item and been targeted with an ad for that same item the next day? If so, you may have wondered whether your smartphone was “listening” to you.

We can definitely say that your phone is listening to you via your device s onboard microphone. It always has to listen to you so it can hear your voice command and assist you. Why is my phone listening to me? When you ask Siri to find something, this information is used for targeted ads. It’s not different from typing something into Baidu. If you’re looking for car dealerships in your city, related ads will start chasing you across the Internet in a way a virtual assistant is just another search engine.

What’s worse, your device doesn’t need to listen to your conversations. There’s a good chance you’re already giving it all the information it needs. Most of us regularly disclose our information to a wide range of websites and apps. We do this when we grant them certain permissions, or allow “cookies” to track our online activities.

So-called cookies allow websites to “remember” certain details about our interaction with the site. For instance, login cookies let you save your login details so you don’t have to re-enter them each time. The cookie will host marketer’s ads and grant it access to data it collects from you (which you will have given it permission to do—perhaps by clicking on some harmless looking popup).

As such, the advertiser can build a picture of your life: your routines, wants and needs. These companies constantly seek to evaluate the popularity of their products and how this varies based on factors such as a customer’s age, gender, height, weight, job and hobbies.

【1】Why does the author mention “Siri” and “Baidu” in paragraph 2?

    A.To explain a rule.

    B.To draw a conclusion.

    C.To make a prediction.

    D.To clarify a view.

【2】What is the author’s attitude to the personal information being tracked by websites?

    A.Unfavorable.

    B.Tolerant.

    C.Positive.

    D.Unclear.

【3】How can the companies constantly seek to evaluate the popularity of their products?

A.By ringing you for your routines, wants and needs.

B.By enquiring your friends about your preferences.

C.By buying your personal information secretly.

D.By collecting your routines, wants and needs.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

A.Your smart phone is “listening” to you.

B.You can’t live without the smart phone.

C.Baidu Search engine is helping you.

D.Audio Siri is always helping you.

  • 24、From ordering food to buying a new book to making a charitable donation. More and more decisions that used to be made on paper are now being made on digital devices like tables, phones, and computers. And this trend toward digitalization has many advantages, in particular when it comes to efficiency and sustainability but could it also be negatively influencing how we make decisions?

We conducted a series of studies with more than 2,500 participants across the U.S. and China to explore the impact of the medium they use to make a decision, with a particular focus on decisions with some sort of moral component. We asked the participants to make a variety of choices using either a paper form or a digital tablet, and found that people who used paper made more virtuous decisions than those than used a digital device.

Why might this be? Our research suggests that the key factor driving this effect is how “real” the decision feels. We asked participants to describe how real a decision felt, as well as the extent to which they perceived the decision as representing who they wore, and they consistently indicated that making a choice on paper felt more real and representative than making the same decision on a digital device. Follow-up analyses confirmed that when a decision felt more real participants were more likely to go with the moral or responsible option.

It may seem like a minor detail, but our research shows that the medium with which your customers, employees, or community members make a decision can have a major impact on the choices they make. This has implications for marketers, policymakers, and anyone seeking to encourage any sort of virtuous behavior.

Of course, using paper is far from a guarantee of virtuous behavior and a certainly doesn’t make sense in every context. There were businesses for which papers just isn’t practical, such as e-commerce platforms. In these contests, managers may want to explore other strategies that could potentially make decisions seem more real in digital contexts.

    A.To contradict a belief.

A.Digitalization makes our life more different and sustainable.

B.People who use paper to make a decision more virtuous

D.Participants prefer paper to a digital device when making decisions
