二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Although it's weird for characters to suddenly break into songs and dances in the middle of a conversation, it still produces cheerful atmosphere for actors to do the same, doesn't it?

The impromptu songs and dances are what La La Land—a musical film is all about. This pattern worked surprisingly well: The film won a record-breaking seven Golden Globes, and it already has 14 Oscar, nominations, including best picture, best director and best costume design. La La Land was released in China on Feb 14, which appeals to the youngsters nowadays.

But why is it that a musical film is booming all of a sudden?

It's believed that lie current political climate is driving people toward light-hearted entertainment for relief - especially movies like La La Land, which tells a simple boy — meets — girl story. The tale takes place in an ever-sunny Los Angeles, where everything is painted in a positive light, which may be another attraction for those looking to escape the world for a short while.

“This was the only time for me since Nov 8 that I was successfully able to shut out all thoughts of Trump World for over two hours,” wrote The Guardian's editor John Patterson. “La La Land, if only for a while, quite got me out of abomination.”

This is not hard to understand if you think about the last lime musical films had their moment of glory. It was more than half a century ago, back in the 1930s through to the 1950s, when the Great Depression—an economy crisis- hit the US.

“Politicians often assigned Hollywood the task of 'cheering Americans up', asking them to produce comedies to get rid of anger and gloom during the Depression, hoping that the entertainment industry could play a key role in distracting Americans from the horrors of the economic downfall,” wrote Sydney Huber on the blog Music During the Great Depression.

Despite being a musical filled with a dream-like atmosphere, La La Land has its fair share of realism. The boy — meets — girl story doesn't end in a happily — ever — after way. Instead, they have to make a choice between their relationship and their careers, like many couples in the real world.

“There is a modem energy to it,” Damien Chazelle, the film's director, told The Independent. “It was fun to take certain characteristics from fifties old musicals, but put them in a modem city and film them in a modem way, and see what resulted from that.”

【1】According to John Patterson, what made La La Land popular with American viewers?

A.It tells a pleasurable boy — meets — girl story.

B.It eases the stress people feel in the real world.

C.It reminds people of the glory of Hollywood musical films.

D.It introduces a new performing style to the film industry.

【2】What role did musicals play during the Great Depression according to Sydney Huber?

A.They expressed people's anger and anxiety.

B.They provided solutions to the economic downfall.

C.They served as a tool to spread politicians, ideas.

D.They brought comfort and entertainment to people.

【3】It can be inferred from the last paragraphs that Damien Chazelle         .

A.wasn't satisfied with the happy ending of the film

B.meant to present the story in a more realistic way

C.held an open attitude toward borrowing ideas from old musicals

D.wanted the film to focus on relationship and career problems

【4】The underlined word “abomination“ in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to "________"

  • 22、Challenging work that requires lots of analytical thinking, planning and other managerial skills might help your brain stay sharp as you age, a study published Wednesday in the journal Neurology suggests.

Researchers from the University of Leipzig in Germany gathered more than 1, 000 retired workers who were over age 75 and assessed the volunteers’ memory and thinking skills through a battery of tests. Then, for eight years, the scientists asked the same group to come back to the lab every 18 months to take the same sorts of tests.

Those who had held mentally stimulating(刺激), demanding jobs before retirement tended to do the best on the tests. And they tended to lose cognitive(认知) function at a much slower rate than those with the least mentally challenging jobs. The results held true even after the scientists accounted for the participants’ overall health status.

“This works just like physical exercise, ” says Francisca Then, who led the study. “After a long run, you may feel like you’re in pain, you may feel tired. But it makes you fit. After a long day at work-sure, you will feel tired, but it can help your brain stay healthy. ”

It's not just corporate jobs, or even paid work that can help keep your brain fit, Then points out. A waiter’s job, for example, that requires multitasking, teamwork and decision-making could be just as stimulating as any high-level office work. And “running a family household requires high-level planning and coordinating(协调), ” she says. “You have to organize the activities of the children and take care of the bills and groceries. ”

Of course, our brains can decline as we grow older for lots of reasons-including other environmental influences or genetic factors. Still, continuing to challenge yourself mentally and keeping your mind busy can only help.

【1】Why did the scientists ask the volunteers to take the tests?

    A.To assess their health status.

    B.To evaluate their work habits.

    C.To analyze their personality.

    D.To measure their mental ability.

【2】How does Francisca Then explain her findings in paragraph 4?

    A.By using an expert’s words.

    B.By making a comparison.

    C.By referring to another study.

    D.By introducing a concept.

【3】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.Retired Workers Can Pick Up New Skills

B.Old People Should Take Challenging Jobs

C.Your Tough Job Might Help Keep You Sharp

D.Cognitive Function May Decline As You Age

  • 23、   We can express thoughts and feelings and send sounds and pictures on our smartphones today. We also communicate using programs like Skype and Face Time. We can’t send tastes, smells or touch like people do in the real world, of course. Professor Adrian David Cheok at City University in London is trying to develop a way for smartphones to do just that.

To give users a sense of taste, researchers designed two electrodes (电极) that are placed on the tongue. A chemical process creates different tastes through molecules (分子) on the surface of the tongue. This chemical process sends electrical signals that convince the brain that a person is tasting something. They have already created sour, salty, sweet and bitter tastes. “You put your tongue between these two silver electrodes and then it stimulates your tongue electrically and you get a virtual taste sense in your brain.”

A device called Scentee permits users to have the sense of smell. Scentee plugs into a smartphone and can spray (释放) tiny clouds of fragrances (气味), including flowers, fruit and coffee. Professor Cheok says the person speaking can activate the device. “Basically what happens is that we have an app, it connects to the Internet and then this will release a scent from your mobile phone.” Scentee holds a container with about 100 different smells. The container must be replaced when all the scents run out.

The sense of touch comes from a ring-like device. It is connected wirelessly to the smartphone. The device sends a soft, electrical squeeze (挤压) when a person on the other end of a telephone conversation does the same. Professor Cheok says this permits a kind of wireless touch communication. “I can be in London and my friend can be in Tokyo, and I can squeeze my finger and then he’ll get a squeeze on his finger through the Internet. It’s a way of touch communication with small mobile devices.”

1Which of the following functions of smartphones is NOT referred to in the text?

    A.Sending tastes.

    B.Sending smells.

    C.Sensing the owner’s feelings.

D.Touching people you are communicating with through the phone.

A chemical process creates different tastes on the tongue.

Put the tongue between the two electrodes.

    The tongue is stimulated electrically.

The chemical process sends electrical signals to the brain.

  • 24、   I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.

War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.

The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through phone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.

Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn’t notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks.”

Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on.
