  • 21、Max Woosey, an l1-year-old from the United Kingdom, has spent his time during COVID-19 doing something pretty meaningful. He slept in a tent for over 500 nights in a row. And he did this not only because he loves the outdoors but in service to others.

Max’s father is a Royal Marine (皇家海军陆战队员), so he has courage and love for outdoor activities in his blood. Max’s family was looking after their neighbor, Rick, who was dying of cancer. Before Rick passed away he gave Max a tent and had him promise to have an adventure.

So, after Rick died, Max had an idea. He decided to raise money for Devon Hospice (救济院) , which cared for Rick in his final days. When the first lockdown happened, Max had realized that much of the hospice’s fundraising (筹资) also came to a stop. But outside the hospice, a number of people were waiting for help. So Max set a goal to raise 100 pounds by camping out in his front garden.

On March 29th, 2020, Max started his camping adventure in, Rick’s tent. As he passed hundreds of days camping out, he attracted national attention from the media and even the Prime Minister, who later paid him a visit. More people have donated to Devon Hospice.

Now, 500 days later, he is still camping! Through storms, rain, high winds and cold, he stuck to it. The lessons his dad taught him from the Royal Marines, to never give up, show kindness, honesty and try hard helped support him in tough times.

  • 23、It was our turn to open our presents this particular Christmas morning. The living room was already covered with torn (撕开的)wrapping paper. Obviously, the children could hardly wait to discover the hidden treasures, which they had expected for nearly a month. Now we adults sat around the room with our presents at our feet, slowly removing the paper, trying to maintain our dignity in front of the children.

My wife Brenda, and her family have a tradition of getting each other gag (恶作剧)gifts. This always makes me a bit uneasy at Christmas or my birthday, never knowing what embarrassment lies waiting for me under the wrapping paper.

Recently, my six-year-old daughter Christy seemed to busy herself with something while I was playing computer video flight games. Now she was standing directly in front of me. The excitement of the moment just shone across her face. Finally, I came to the last gift and with my natural Sherlock Holmes ability, I concluded that this had to be the gag gift. With everyone looking on, I decided to go ahead and get it over with — just let them have their laugh — and I tore the paper and there it was...a toy airplane about two inches long. Our holiday guests started giggling (咯咯笑) to themselves as I looked up to my wife with an unpleasant smile on my face, saying, “A toy airplane? Are you kidding me?”

Brenda gave me the look — that look that always tells me I have just said something wrong and should have given it a second thought. I had failed to look at the name tag (标签) before I opened the present to see who it was from. As I picked up the paper from the floor and read the name tag, my heart sank. On the tag were the letters that read, “To dad, Love Christy.”

【1】The author feels uneasy at Christmas or on his birthday because _______.

A.he has to spend a lot on presents

B.the wrapping paper is easily torn

C.he feels embarrassed being with his wife’s family

D.he is afraid of the unknown gag gifts

【2】The excited look on Christy’s face showed _______.

A.she was eager to express love to Dad

B.she was thrilled on seeing her gift from her parents

C.she was getting a load of gag gifts

D.she was interested in her video flight games

【3】What’s the author’s feeling on opening the last gift?

    A.Regretful.

    B.Unpleased.

    C.Moved.

    D.Excited.

    【4】The author’s heart sank because _______.

A.his wife was unhappy with what he had said

B.holiday guests giggled on the present

C.the gift was not what he had expected

D.his words could have hurt his daughter’s feeling

【5】What’s the best title of the passage?

    A.Gag gifts: a family tradition

B.A toy airplane: joy at Christmas

C.A hidden treasure: love from dear daughter

    D.A name tag: Christmas present

  • 24、   When a laptop or smartphone battery starts losing its power, the only options are to buy an expensive replacement, or just keep it plugged in all the time. But a woman Mya Le Thai may have found the answer to this problem.

Thai was frustrated that the batteries for her wireless devices degraded over time, until they failed to charge fully. She did not like having to keep her laptop connected to an electrical outlet to keep it powered on. So, she decided to do something about that problem. At first, she and her team at UC Irvine thought about inventing a new battery. But as they experimented, Thai discovered something that might permit lithium-ion(锂离子) batteries to last forever.

Lithium-ion batteries power most wireless devices. Over time, the batteries lose the ability to hold a charge. Most of these batteries have a life span of about 7,000 charging cycles before they die. One of the reasons lithium-ion batteries degrade is their use of nanowires to carry electricity. Nanowires are extremely thin. A human hair is thousands of times thicker, for example. Nanowires are extremely efficient carriers of electricity, which makes them useful in batteries.

But, Thai had a theory-the nanowires might last longer if covered with a gel(凝胶). She and her team tested this theory. “It was a long process and a lot of work,” Thai said. The team tried many coverings for the wires. PMMA, a type of plastic, was one of them. The nanowires were coated with PMMA and cycled through charges 200,000 times. The PMMA-coated nanowires showed no evidence of damage. The results suggest that batteries could last forever, without losing charging ability.

Thai hopes to continue her research to understand why this gel works so well and to see if any other gel could create better results and she is enjoying the publicity about her discovery. She said she never expected her research to get media coverage. “It’s kind of cool,” she said. “I’m really glad people are showing interest in my work and not just in the work itself, but also in technology and energy.”

1What can we infer about nanowires?

A.They last only 7,000 charging cycles. B.They are too weak to carry electricity.

C.They are not suitable to use in batteries. D.Their thinness is a cause of batteries degrade.

2What might be Thai and her team’s breakthrough?

A.Coating nanowires in gel. B.A new kind of battery.

C.New materials for batteries. D.A new way of charging batteries.

3What may be the best title for the passage?

A.The options of batteries for wireless devices B.A woman invents a life-long battery.

C.Mya Le Thai discovered Nanowires D.The reasons for batteries degrading
