二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、To be successful in any aspect of life, you need to know when to use the carrot or the stick.

Here are a few tips to help you decide whether it’s better to use the carrot or the stick.

    With the kids

    The carrot

When it comes to raising a kid, the carrot or the stick dilemma is quickly disappearing as too many parents take the carrot approach to the extreme. In child raising, the carrot should never be materialistic things. If you want to ask for good behavior with a reward, it should be with something that can’t be bought, say, trust. The stick Nowadays, no one likes to use the stick any more, or in my father’s case, the belt. I’m not overlooking child abuse, if you ever want to call it that, but I am encouraging parents to toughen up a bit. You don’t want your kid to test your limits only to find out he can get away with it. If you want to raise a kid, raise the hand and let him know it comes down on the second offense.

    At the office

    The carrot

People need encouragement and motivation to perform well. However, the carrot only really works well with employees who have already proved themselves. If you’ve got someone who can’t show up at the office before noon, the promise of a raise isn’t going to do much. On the contrary, if there’s a guy with a good work moral, he’ll thrive (grow stronger) when you add a promotion to the picture.

    The stick

When considering the carrot or the stick in the office, remember that, overall, the stick is the more practical method in the office. A wise man, who just happened to be an Italian, once said “It’s best to be both loved and feared.” It’s nice to have everyone love you, but running a business isn’t like running a family. You need to have the stick constantly raised.

    With the wife

    The carrot

When it comes to marriage, always use the carrot. I’ve had a lovely marriage for many years, and I’ve always stuck to the carrot approach.

Sometimes you catch more flies with honey, and sometimes it’s the crack of a whip(鞭子) that gets the horse moving. Try not to use too many sticks at home; the carrot is much more fun.

【1】What is the best title of this passage?

    A. The Carrot or the Stick?

    B. The Introduction to the Carrot and the Stick

    C. Tips in the Daily Life

    D. The Advantages of the Carrot and the Stick

2】In kids raising, the author prefers ________.

    A. the carrot approach

    B. the stick approach

    C. both the carrot approach and the stick approach

    D. neither the carrot approach nor the stick approach

3】Which do you think is the best to be a good boss at the office?

    A. Always using carrots.

    B. Eating a lot of carrots.

    C. Being both loved and feared.

    D. Using too many sticks.

4】Which is NOT true according to the passage?

    A. The author often gives more carrots to his wife to eat at home.

    B. The carrot is much more fun when it comes to marriage.

    C. On different occasions, the carrot or the stick is effective.

    D. You need the stick to get your horses to move faster occasionally.

  • 23、I don’t ever want to talk about being a woman scientist again. There was a time in my life when people asked constantly for stories about what it’s like to work in a field controlled by men. I was never very good at telling those stories because truthfully I never found them interesting. What I do find interesting is the origin of the universe, the shape of space-time and the nature of black holes.

At 19, when I began studying astrophysics, it did not bother me in the least to be the only woman in the classroom. But while earning my Ph.D. at MIT and then as a post-doctor doing space research, the issue started to bother me. My every achievement — jobs, research papers, awards — was viewed from the angle of gender(性别). So were my failures.

Then one day a few years ago, out of my mouth came a sentence that would eventually become my reply to any and all provocations(挑衅): I don’t talk about that anymore. It took me 10 years to get back the confidence I had at 19 and to realize that I didn’t want to deal with gender issues. Why should curing sexism be yet another terrible burden on every female scientist?

Today I research and teach at Barnard, a women’s college in New York City. Recently, someone asked me how many of the 45 students in my class were women. You cannot imagine my satisfaction at being able to answer, 45. I know some of my students worry how they will manage their scientific research and a desire for children. And Idon’t dismiss those concerns. Instead, I have given them this: the visual of their physics professor heavily pregnant doing physics experiments. And in turn they have given me the image of 45 women driven by a love of science. And that’s a sight worth talking about.

【1】Why doesn’t the author want to talk about being a woman scientist again?

A.She finds space research more important.

B.She is not good at telling stories of the kind.

C.She is fed up with the issue of sexual discrimination.

D.She feels unhappy working in male-controlled fields.

【2】According to Paragraph 2, what bothered the author constantly?

A.People’s fixed attitude toward female scientists.

B.Lack of confidence in succeeding in space science.

C.Widespread misunderstanding about her space research.

D.Unfair treatment from both inside and outside her circle.

【3】What does the underlined sentence convey?

A.Women should do science experiments while having a baby.

B.Women can balance a career in science and having a family.

C.Women now have fewer problems pursuing a science career.

D.Women have more barriers on their way to academic success.

  • 24、As the new year approaches, crowds around the world may be expecting whizzes and bangs to light up the sky. The appeal of fireworks could fizzle out with the growing use of drones (无人机)for light shows, though.

Ollie Howitt, a leader of SkyMagic, which used a team of 300 drones to create a display for London’s new year celebration last year, said demand had increased substantially. “We do think it’s going to be something that’s ever catching on, as opposed to it being a short-lived sort of fashion people have suddenly got interested in. Drones are reusable and there’s no fallout. In that sense they’re a very good, sustainable option.” she said.

But not everyone agrees. A spokesperson from the British Fireworks Association said drones could also pose environmental problems. “Suggestions are that drones have less of an impact on the environment, but we have serious concerns about electrical demand and use of lithium batteries which are known not to be all that ‘green’,” they said.

An RSPCA spokesperson said that while drones were a possible idea to try to reduce the impact of displays on animals, there were downsides. “Drones are not without their own negative issues such as scaring horses or crashing into birds, and can cause disturbance to animals and members of the public. It’s therefore important for their effects to be fully considered and measures taken to minimize the chance of accidents.” they said.

Some express the opinion that the use of fireworks and drones don’t exclude each other. The sight, sound and gunpowder smell of fireworks will always provide its own unique thrill.

“We find fireworks work really well when teamed up with drones. But we don’t really see it as a one-replacing-the-other at all. We feel as if ifs just another tool in the chest for how you enliven the sky and what you want to do with the show you’re putting on,” said Howitt, noting that while fireworks give a loud, emotive, big performance, drones offer the chance to tell stories in the sky by using a series of images.

【1】What does Howitt think about a drone display in paragraph 2?

    A.It’s definitely an upward trend.

B.It’ll get us to reflect on energy crisis.

C.It’s nothing but a temporary phenomenon.

D.It’ll excite the public curiosity about science.

【2】Which of the following may Howitt suggest according to the last paragraph?

    A.Promoting the production of drones.

    B.Diversifying the functions of drones.

    C.Prohibiting the displays of fireworks.

D.Staging drone shows as an alternative.

【3】What does the underlined word “downsides” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.prospect

    B.puzzles

    C.weaknesses

    D.benefits

【4】In which section of a website can we read this text?

    A.Advertisement.

    B.Business.

    C.Health.

    D.Environment.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It's getting hot. It's time to put on lighter clothes and open up the windows. I can't wait to do so. Yesterday, an unforeseen visit to the kitchen happened during the brief time we were out. Two daring sparrows (麻雀) had risked landing on our territory to enjoy the freshness in our sink and some other breadcrumbs (面包屑) on our kitchen counter.

Actually, sparrows are everywhere. The tiny, gray -and brown birds are found on every continent except Antarctica, flying or jumping around cities, picking up leftover food on side-walks, and sometimes chasing with native bird species. These small creatures have adapted to living alongside humans- similar to pet dogs.

When you come across such sudden callers, you are likely to sense it as an unwanted visitor into your comfort zone, or you might receive it as a lovely angel of life. I chose the second option, with no hesitation while my husband preferred driving them away. After all, I've never come to stop to feel the relationship with sparrows.

I recalled when I was a little girl living in the city, I lived in an apartment with a flat roof viewed from our kitchen window. Every day my mom and I would go out to feed the sparrows. She taught me how to call them with a clicking sound she made with her tongue. I have loved sparrows ever since. So every day in my spare time, I can't stop observing and celebrating their dance from our window. I stuffed them with the leftovers on our tablecloth after every meal. And I have provided them with every kind of bases and stands of our house.

Undoubtedly, they feel at ease in our backyard. And that has led them to gather up courage and slide into our kitchen, bedroom or even reading room. Perhaps because they have the feeling that we don' t consider them trouble makers, but friendly neighbors. But I am slightly worried about their droppings (粪便).

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

One day, they left some droppings in my husband's reading room.
