English was once spoken only by people in a part of Britain. But during the twentieth century, it became a world language—a language used by speakers of many different languages 1 with each other.

English is spoken by about 400 2 people, mostly in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. In Ghana, India and Singapore, English is used as a working language, for example, between bosses and secretaries, and between doctors and patients, although there are other languages for everyday use. In China and many other countries, English is 3 foreign language that children learn at school.

The reason why English is spoken everywhere is that in the nineteenth century, English became the language of world trade. And in the 4 century, the US spread English through newspaper, television and films. It is now the common language for international travel, science, industry, and recently, information technology and the Internet.

It is also important to know that English 5 many words from other languages, for example, “restaurant” from French, “zero” from Arabic, “piano” from Italian, and “tofu” from Chinese.

    much   stop speak  continue world

Will the importance of English last?

Although it is called a “world language”, most of the people on the earth 6 English as either their first or second language. However, hundreds of millions of people use it, and hundreds of millions are learning it.

Because so many people learn and use English, it may be hard to imagine that one day English may not be the  7 leading (最重要的) language. Remember that there were other important languages in the past that which lost their importance or even disappeared.

In Europe, Latin (拉丁语) was used as a common language for many centuries before people 8 using it. French was once a language known by all well-educated people, and was more popular than English. But since the nineteenth century, English has taken the lead.

Today, many people who want to learn a new language are learning Chinese. As China 9 to grow, many people think that Chinese will become as common as English by the middle of the twenty-first century. More and more schools in Europe are teaching Chinese as a foreign language, together with some European languages.  However, most people still think that English will be used 10 around the world, at least for the next twenty or thirty years.

It may be that, one day, instead of English, another language will be used across the world.

六、阅读理解 (共3题,共 15分)
  • 21、   In the Oscar-nominated film Up in the Air (《在云端》), as George Clooney walks through an airport, audiences can hear the familiar sound of a Chinese musical instrument – erhu.

The erhu has become more popular among Hollywood filmmakers. Many composers, directors and producers feel that this instrument can add color and emotion to their films. In the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: At world’s End(《加勒比海盗3:世界的尽头》), we can hear the erhu in Chow Yun-Fat’s scenes. The erhu also appears in Kung Fu Panda and 2012. When people watch these movies, they can enjoy the sound of the erhu.

The erhu is often called “Chinese violin”, but in many ways they are different. Like the violin, the erhu is stringed(有弦的) instrument made of natural wood and played with a bow, but the violin has four strings and the erhu has only two. While the violin is played horizontally, the erhu is played vertically(垂直地). The sounds made by both instruments are different.

The erhu is said to date back to the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907). In classical Chinese music, the erhu is known for its sad sound. The most famous erhu piece is Moonlight on Second Spring(《二泉映月》). It was written by a musician who was born blind and lived most of his short life as a homeless person.

1The first two paragraphs are written to tell us about _______.

    A.Oscar-nominated films

B.the use of the erhu in movies

    C.traditional Chinese musical instruments

D.how people feel after hearing the erhu

2Why has the erhu become more popular among Hollywood filmmakers?

A.Because it can make their films more colorful and emotional.

B.Because it matches the sad theme of their films.

C.Because audiences in the US enjoy hearing the erhu.

D.Because there are Chinese actors in their movies.

3What do we know from the story?

A.The erhu is the most familiar Chinese musical instrument to foreign audiences.

B.The erhu has been around for more than a thousand years.

C.Classical Chinese music is known for its sad sound.

D.Moonlight on Second Spring was written for homeless people.

  • 22、Zombies(僵尸)are real! You meet them every day on the sidewalk. They walk slowly, with their heads down and they will not look at you. They are living in a different world, a world of the mobile phone!

Many people are complaining about these mobile phone zombies because they walk slowly, making it difficult for other people to use the sidewalk. Chongqing and a few other cities have come up with an idea to try to solve the problem. They’ve divided up sidewalks into lanes(线 路): one lane for mobile-zombies and one lane for everyone else. The experiment hasn’t worked out very well, since most mobile-zombies don’t even notice the lanes.

I have another suggestion for the problem. In Shanghai, we have blind paths. They are made of small raised tiles(凸起的瓷砖)that help blind people follow a straight line. Perhaps the same way could be used for mobile-zombies. A lane with a rough surface would allow people to concentrate on their mobile phones and still know they are walking in a straight line. Of course, I have further advice. At the end of the lane would be a large hole where all the mobile-zombies would disappear into the center of the earth!

Well, I don’t think my advice is going to be taken, but I don’t think special lanes for mobile-zombies will work out either. I think it’s just a better idea to remind people that sidewalks are shared space and they should think of others when they are using their mobile phones.

【1】According to the passage, who are mobile phone zombies?

    A.The people who walk slowly.

B.The people who always play with mobile phones on the road.

C.The people who live in a different world.

    D.The real zombies.

【2】Why hasn’t the lane for mobile-zombies in Chongqing worked out well?

A.Because it is too expensive to walk on the lanes.

B.Because there are so few lanes in Chongqing.

C.Because few mobile-zombies notice the lanes in fact.

    D.Because they have blind paths.

【3】The underlined word “rough” in Paragraph 3 means “___________” in Chinese.

    A.柔和的

    B.光滑的

    C.漂亮的

    D.粗糙的

【4】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Shanghai has also built lanes for the mobile-zombies.

B.The writer’s advice for the mobile-zombies was taken.

C.Mobile-zombies should think of others on the road.

D.The experiment has worked out too well.

【5】Which of the following can be the title of this passage?

    A.The End of Mankind

B.The Space Taken by Mobile Phones

    C.Viruses Around Us

    D.Special Lanes

Do you want to become an astronaut? If you want to be one of the few people to experience the thrill (激动) of lift-off (发射), see the Earth from on high and float (漂浮) in a spacecraft, then how do you go about it?

Fourth, you must be healthy as astronaut training can be very tiring.

Lastly, on a spacecraft, astronauts live and work in a very small space, so you need to get on well with people.
