  • 21、The long, white robot weighs more than 450 kilograms. Like other robots, it is equipped with cameras and mechanical arms to automatically perform many different jobs.

Angus is a major part of operations at Alexander’s indoor robot farm about 40 kilometers south of San Francisco. The 743-square meter farm uses a hydroponic system that grows plants without soil. The plants grow inside equipment that provides a continuous flow of water. The indoor farm uses electrical light instead of sunlight.

This kind of farm uses much less water and does not require human labor to run. The main job for Angus is to move thousands of plants around the farm, from small containers to larger ones as they grow. Angus also carries plants to another robot that does not have a name yet. Angus moves slowly to complete its work. But the robot is very strong and can lift about 300 kilograms.

For now, the farm uses humans to collect vegetables and other crops when they are ready. But Alexander says he is working on a robot that will eventually take over that job too.

Alexander helped start the company Iron Ox after leaving Google, where he worked on robotics at the company’s Google X project. He teamed up with another former Google employee, Jon Binney. Together they founded Iron Ox.

Iron Ox’s website says the hydroponic growing system uses 90 percent less water. It also says the growing method is up to 30 times more productive than growing crops on land.

Alexander says growing food robotically throughout the year in major cities will provide more consistent and fresh products. Most of the vegetables sold in the U.S. are grown in California, Arizona, Mexico and other nations. That means that many people in the U.S. cities are eating vegetables that are nearly a week old by the time they arrive at stores.

Indoor farms operate all year round and are not generally affected by bad weather. This will permit the company to provide a steady flow of goods without major price changes.

【1】How does Angus work in the farm?

A.It provides a continuous flow of water for the plants.

B.It directs other robots to work in the farm.

C.It is in charge of transferring plants.

    D.It works on collecting vegetables.

【2】What do we know about Alexander?

A.He started Iron Ox by himself.

B.He started a company studying robotics with Binney.

C.He works on collecting crops when they are ready.

D.He used to work on robotics at Google.

【3】What’s the advantage of Alexander’s farm?

A.The vegetables from his farm sell at a higher price.

B.It uses less water but produces more.

C.It uses electrical light instead of sunlight.

D.The vegetables from his farm are more nutritious.

【4】Which of the following can be a suitable title for the test?

A.Robot Farm, Aiming to Bring Fresher Food to the US Cities

B.Robot Farm, the Future of the Agriculture

C.Alexander, an Extraordinary Scientist on Robotics

D.Hydroponic System, the New Way of Farming

  • 22、Dr. Chatbot’s namesake: Jeremiah A. Chatbot III

When Jeremiah A. Chatbot III was just a young boy growing up in Brooklyn, his parents motivated him to do great things in life. “I’ve always been a mama’s boy,” he told the Campus Times in 2017. “She always told me that I would be abandoned unless I became a doctor or lawyer, and that motivated me.”

Chatbot excelled in high school, was accepted to every college he applied to, and eventually enrolled at UR. He tried both pre-med and pre-law, but earned poor grades in both. Chatbot decided to transfer, getting into the University of Pennsylvania mostly due to his high school grades. Here, he did much better academically, switching his major to Marketing and Business (against his mother’s wishes). Equally important for his academic success at UPenn was that he perfected the art of cheating during exams. His social life also excelled, causing him to create a network of people who later found success. Chatbot applied to several graduate programs as a senior, but was only accepted to a Ph.D. program at the Simon School of Business in Marketing.

After completion of the program, Chatbot was hired by UR to do marketing work. He found success by working the phrase “ever better” nine times into a single 30-second advertisement for Strong Memorial Hospital. In 2015, Chatbot was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Despite the award, Chatbot never received tenure or respect from his mother, who said in an interview she wishes he were a “real doctor.”

In 2018, just months after his interview with the CT , Chatbot passed away from system overload. The symptom monitoring app now used by the University was originally going to be named for Frederick Douglass or Susan B. Anthony, but as Chatbot’s possessions left an endowment to the University, the app was named in his honor.

【1】Which subject did he perform well in college?

    A.Medicine

    B.Law

    C.Marketing

    D.Physiology

【2】Why didn’t Chatbot receive respect from his mother?

A.He excelled cheating skills in the exams.

B.He failed several courses in college.

C.He was against his mother’s wishes.

D.He was not awarded any prize.

【3】What’s the author’s purpose in writing this text?

    A.To introduce Dr. Chatbot.

B.To make the symptom monitoring app known.

C.To prove the importance of parents in motivating children to succeed.

D.To stress the necessity of transferring majors in university.

【4】What can we infer from the text?

A.Chatbot was very successful in doing marketing work in UR.

B.The symptom monitoring app was named in Chatbot’s honor.

C.The system monitoring app was initially named after Chatbot.

D.Chatbot was poor in social life and had not many friends.

  • 24、   In the middle of the twentieth century, medical research showed that there was a clear connection between cardiovascular (心血管的)disease or CVD and lifestyle. This awareness led to a change in attitudes towards health care. Health experts began to stress the idea that people could take control of their own health instead of relying on medical help. People listened.

Many people are no longer depending on doctors for advice and treatment; instead they are focusing on preventive measures and taking responsibility for their own health. A greater understanding of the connection between diet and health has led many to reduce or even reject food high in fat from their diets.

Similarly, people are also becoming more serious about reducing stress. An increasing number of people understand that frequent aerobic (有氧的)exercise like walking, running, and swimming reduces stress.

These changes in attitudes and behavior have had a positive effect. Deaths from CVD first began to fall in western countries in the 1960s, and this trend continues today. In the United States the death rate from this disease fell by more than 35 percent between 1980 and 1997 and then by another 26 percent between 1999 and 2005. In 2010, 6 percent of adults suffered from some form of CVD, down from 6.7 percent in 2006.

However, the news about CVD is not all positive. Despite the fall in death rates, CVD is still much too frequent in most western countries. CVD has also become much more common in developing countries, with 80 percent of all CVD deaths now occurring there.

What are governments doing to fight this terrible disease? The global effort to inform people of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle continues. Governments are also introducing specific changes aimed at reducing unhealthy lifestyles. In Mauritius a government program encouraged the nation to switch from palm oil, high in fat, to healthier soybean oil.

1What does the underlined word “ change” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

A.A decreasing number of people are dying from CVD.

B.People understand the need for an expert doctor.

C.Medical science can be used to cure CVD.

D.People take better care of their health.

2What are more people doing to reduce stress?

    A.Exercising on a regular basis.

    B.Focusing on new medical research.

    C.Seeking treatment from their doctors.

    D.Removing food high in fat.

3How does the author show the effects of these changes?

A.By giving examples. B.By stating arguments.

C.By listing numbers. D.By providing research results.

4Why did the government of Mauritius encourage people to eat soybean oil instead of palm oil?

A.Soybean oil is cheaper than palm oil.

B.Palm oil is less healthy than soybean oil.

C.Soybean oil is easier to digest than palm oil.

D.Palm oil is harder to produce than soybean oil.

5What would be the best title for the text?

    A.Causes of CVD

    B.Changing patterns of CVD

    C.Changing attitudes towards CVD

D.Treatment breakthroughs in the field of CVD

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Any Problem with New Job Titles?

CEO, marketing director, lead writer, sales associate… Employees’ roles have generally been defined with these straightforward terms. They communicate essential employee details such as job function and seniority and make sense to employees and employers alike. But now new titles are found in the changing world of work. Fancy but unclear labels like “chief visionary officer” or “business development guru” come into our view, making the traditional system seem rigid. Will there be problems?

In general, traditional job titles are clear and indicative of the employee’s seniority and responsibilities. For example, it’s largely accepted that assistants are below associates, who are below directors, who are below vice (副的) presidents, who are below CEOs. But these new job titles are meaningless outside an organization, at least in some people’s view. A recruiter (招聘人员) may not be able to identify the right candidates based on their previous working experience. Besides, having an extremely uncommon word in a title may give a job hunter difficulty in explaining his past job to future recruiters, according to Adrjan, director of an economic research. That means both employees and employers could suffer.

Yet, from another perspective, altered job titles can help make an employee feel more valued and better empowered in a company. “They massively boost your confidence,” says Hughes, who works as “head of hype and culture” at an advertising agency. “They put faith in your competence, creating an environment in which you can grow and develop.” And from the companies’ standpoint, they want to convey the message that they are trying to treat their staff in a more respectful way. For example, if they use “people” instead of “human resources” in a title, they signal that they value individuals as customers and partners rather than resources to exploit.
