二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、There are more than 10 million people in the world who are unable to speak and they depend on computerized equipment to provide their voices. But because there are so few recorded voices for them, the same voice used by the physicist and writer Stephen Hawking is used by little children.

When speech scientist Rupal Patel was at a meeting and saw a young girl talking to a grown man and both were using the same computer voice, she knew something had to be done. So Patel worked to create custom (定制的) voices for custom people. To start the process, a voice donor (捐赠者) records a series of short stories and sentences. They don’t record every single word a person might say, but they typically cover all the different combinations of sounds that happen in language.

The process might take between five and seven hours, but it doesn’t have to be done all at once and it can be done in the donor’s home. The voice donor can start, stop and pick up whenever it’s convenient. They’re encouraged to record from the same place each time so the sound is continuous. Those recordings are then divided into little pieces of speech to be kept in a database (数据库). The person who will receive the voice also records a few special sounds. Patel’s team then searches the voice database for a perfect voice match. Finally, that donated voice is joined with the receiver’s sounds, which makes a custom voice.

So far, more than 14,000 speakers from 120 countries have contributed to what the company, VocaliD, calls “The Human Voicebank”. People who want to donate can record from anywhere they have a computer or phone, sharing their voice with anyone who needs it or even banking it for themselves. “English speakers from English-speaking countries share their voice as part of our Human Voicebank because they want to help bring speech to the speechless,” VocaliD spokesperson Elisabeth Nuboer said. “We have voice donors all over the world, ranging in age from 6 to 91 and welcome everyone and all your wonderful voice.”

【1】How do the speechless people speak, according to the passage?

A.They write their words on paper.

    B.They use computerized equipment.

    C.They depend on body language.

D.They type their words on phones.

【2】What caused the problem that Rupal Patel discovered at a meeting?

A.There were so few recorded voices.

B.No recorded voices were for children.

    C.Recorded voices didn’t sound perfect.

D.Recorded voices were not easy to understand.

【3】Why do the speechless ones who want to get the donated voice also need to record a few special sounds?

A.Because they also need to make a contribution to the database.

B.Because their special sounds will be needed for the study in the future.

C.Because their throats need to be examined before using special equipment.

D.Because Patel’s team needs their special sounds to get a perfect voice match.

【4】Which of the following can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.English-speaking voice donors are more important than others.

B.English is the main language in VocaliD’s Human Voicebank.

C.Many people around the world are willing to help the speechless.

D.The donor whose age is below six will be refused by the company.

  • 22、   Many people have heard the story of Nessie, Scotland’s Loch Ness monster. Yet, have you ever heard of an ice monster in the American state of Alaska?

An ice monster is what many people thought they were seeing when a federal government agency published a strange-looking video. The Bureau of Land Management put the video on its Facebook page.

The pictures were taken in Alaska, the northernmost part of the United States. While winter has yet to officially begin, weather conditions there already are very cold.

In the video, a fish with ice on its back appears to be swimming. The video was only 20 seconds long. But it was enough to get people wondering what they saw.

One person said it showed a shark that lost its way. Someone else thought the video was a prank designed to cheat people. He said the Bureau of Land Management wanted to bring attention to its Facebook page. Other people asked if the video was edited in some way, removing some images or adding others. Perhaps, they reasoned, the bureau was trying to frighten people around the celebration of Halloween. Some people said the ice monster was a large fish: a sturgeon(鲟). Someone even suggested the creature was a crocodile. But such an animal could not survive in Alaska, where it does not get very hot, even in summer. Some readers said it was ice moving in the river current, or ice that was frozen to a rope or some other object.

On October 31, the Bureau of Land Management published an update. It agreed with some of the people who commented on the original piece. An expert from the Department of Fish and Game told the bureau the picture looked “really cool”, but it was probably just ice stuck to a rope. The ice caused the rope to float and move in the river’s current.

Even though the mystery seems to be solved, some people do not seem persuaded. Others are still wishing it was a “real” monster.

1What is the author’s main purpose in asking the question in Paragraph 1 ?

A.To encourage readers to answer it.

B.To open a discussion among readers.

C.To arouse people’s interest in Nessie.

D.To introduce the topic of the passage.

2What does the underlined word " prank” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

    A.Puzzle. B.Dream.

    C.Trick. D.Advertisement.

    3The monster couldn’t be a crocodile because .

A.a crocodile can’t swim so quickly B.the temperature is too low in Alaska

C.a crocodile only moves in summer D.it doesn’t look like a crocodile at all

4According to the expert, what is the ice monster most likely to be?

A.A shark losing its way. B.A large fish: a sturgeon.

C.A sea creature like Nessie. D.A piece of ice frozen to a rope.

  • 24、I have a strange and frequent dream in which I am assigned a lead role in a major musical production and eagerly agree to take it on — knowing I can’t sing or act my way out of a paper bag, and knowing I’d rather be anywhere but front and center onstage. The dream always ends before the production starts, to the benefit of my self-respect, the unlucky director’s reputation, and my potential audience—who no doubt would have fled at the first note.

I chalk it up to my one and only experience in such things, my high school’s production of South Pacific, a musical I’d so loved as a teen I could not resist auditioning (试镜) —not for a major role, but as one of the chorus of island women raising our arms in the background.

I was cast immediately, a fact I attribute (归功于) to my olive skin and then long black hair, which overcame any doubts the director might have had about my voice. I could pass as an islander. Not only that, but my mother sewed a skirt for me, a beautiful, vividly colored, and artful feat of sewing. The opening night was a triumph for all. But I haven’t set foot on a stage again.

In his elementary school years, my grandson took a shine to attending live theater with me. But he demurred when I suggested he audition for local children’s productions. “It’s not me,” he declared, even as one of his close friends went from a local stage production to a Broadway role.

But the source of these dreams, decades later, still confuses me. The dreams never give me a hint of why I’d been chosen for a starring role once in an Italian opera without having any singing or acting talent or even an audition, or why I’d decided to go for it, knowing I was completely unequipped and unprepared. I suspect (猜想) these dreams will get me as close to such a reality as I’ll ever be.

For now, I only hope I keep waking up before I have to try an opening note.

【1】What can we know about the author from the first paragraph?

A.She has a gift for singing and performing.

B.She always acts as a lead role in musicals.

C.She prefers not to be a focus of attention.

D.She respects the director in performances.

【2】What made the director choose the author as an islander?

    A.Her appearance.

    B.Her acting talent.

    C.Her sweet voice.

    D.Her beautiful dress.

【3】What does the underlined word “demurred” mean in Para.4?

    A.Considered.

    B.Hesitated.

    C.Accepted.

    D.Objected.

【4】What is the author doing now?

A.She is having a try-out for an opera.

B.She is remembering an opening note.

C.She is preparing for an Italian opera.

D.She is dreaming of being a star on stage.

【5】What could we learn from the passage?

    A.The author always had dreams.

B.The author succeeded in auditioning once as a teen.

C.The director had a doubt over the author.

D.The author’s grandson attended all the auditions.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

May 18, 1986, was the kind of beautiful, sunny day that regularly brought the Rodriguez family to California's Catalina Island for some fishing on their 28-foot pleasure boat, the DC Too.

Desiree's father, a 30-year-old construction worker named Thomas Rodriguez, loved the sport, especially catching bass(鲈鱼). A strong, thin man, he had instilled in his oldest daughter a love of the outdoors., teaching her how to bait a hook and cast a line.

As was their custom at least once a month, the family boarded their boat that morning for a carefree day trip. They spent the day fishing in the Pacific Ocean, then left the island in the early evening. Soon dense fog rolled in.

Desiree fell into a light sleep beside her five-year-old sister, Trisha, at a table on the boat's lower deck. Their father's sharp orders woke her up: “Get out of the boat. The boat's sinking!"

Within seconds, the boat turned over, leaving just the tip of its bow in the air—and the six family members fell into the river.

Kept afloat by her orange life jacket, nine-year-old Desiree Rod-riguez had watched helplessly as one family member after another let go of life. Just as she, too, began to give up, the captain of a fishing boat Philip Friedman spotted her floating in the water. Within minutes, Friedman leaped in and grabbed Desiree, pulling her back toward the boat—and toward life. That was 35 years ago, and the last time the rescuer and the girl saw one another. Until this year, when the Covid-19 pandemic ruined Philip Friedman's plans to go fishing, the captain decided to stick around Southern California with his family and make a podcas(播客) about his hobby.

“Friedman Adventures" launched in January 2021, featuring stories from fishermen about boats, catches, and fishing tips. On one episode(一集) Friedman talked about the 1986 rescue, wondering what was going on with Desiree. That day, 41-year-old Pablo Pena listened to the show on his 20--minute way to work as a railroad engineer.
