  • 22、During our research for this sequence, we had been told we shouldn’t even bother trying to film the Pallas’s cat in winter. Filming such an animal was said to be near impossible. We wouldn’t be able to find such a small animal in the vast steppes of Mongolia. Besides this, they’re known to be easily frightened and extremely cautious. But we wanted to surprise audiences by showing them frozen worlds that lay outside of the Poles.

Arriving in Mongolia, I was struck by its vastness. It’s unbelievable that our first day presented us with a good view of our hard-to-find target. Our guide led us to the top of a hill. More than a kilometre away in an unimpressive pile of rocks, I could see a tiny spot, a Pallas’s cat! We were so excited!

We had been blessed with extremely low daytime temperature. Pallas’s cats have the densest coat of any cat, but even so they must save their energy as much as possible. Their movements at these temperatures were especially seldom. While conditions did not look promising, we still needed to see if we could actually film them.

The cats would only appear if the sun was out. But the steppe could be hit at any time by fast and bitter winds which would make any animal that had decided to appear come to an end. The decision as to whether to hold out for the weather to pass or to have a rest was always a painful one to make.

But as the weeks went on and we spent more time with the cats, it was astonishing to see just how it was that they were able to survive in such a difficult and unpleasant environment. The longer we spent with them, the more we found ourselves falling in love with these attractive little characters and their winter lives.

【1】Why do people think it’s unlikely to film the cats?

    A.The action is illegal.

    B.The steppes are not large.

    C.The cats are extremely careful.

    D.The cat number is small.

【2】How did the author feel when the steppes came into sight?

    A.Amazed.

    B.Excited.

    C.Anxious.

    D.Upset.

【3】What can we infer from paragraph 3 and 4?

    A.We suffered low temperatures.

B.The Pallas’s cats love the sun.

C.The decisions are hard to make.

    D.The filming condition is challenging.

【4】What would be the best title of the text?

    A.Palla’s Cats-An Unusual Animal

B.Experience of Filming the Palla’s Cats

    C.Survival Skills on Mongolia Steppes

    D.Extreme Weather outside the Poles

  • 23、Boris Johnson has said extending the school day is “the right thing to do” and the government is examining how extra hours could be used for additional tuition and activities. In his strongest commitment yet to imposing the extra hours, the prime minister also criticized the work of the former education recovery chief, Sir Kevan Collins, telling ministers that their catch-up schooling plan was not ambitious enough.

Collins once recommended spending about £ 15 bn on education recovery, including extending the school day by 30 minutes. Government officials said the plan was praiseworthy in some aspects. But they also suggested further cash for education catch-up at the autumn spending review, due to the objection that the plan already announced left much to be desired.

Speaking to the education committee chair, Robert Half on, Johnson said: “We’re looking at the evidence, and if Fm absolutely frank with you and the committee, to begin with some of the evidence that was assembled was not as good as it could have been.” The evidence on lengthening the school day wasn’t as powerful as it was on tuition, for instance, but that doesn’t mean it’s not the right thing to do. I do think it’s the right thing to do. Question is how you do it. What sorts of activities do you need? Are they academic? As you rightly say, we’re doing a proper review of all of that to get the evidence that we want. Halfon said he was encouraged by the comments. “We need radical thinking and radical action to tackle the disaster which has befallen children in the last 18 months” he told the Guardian, “If the government is seriously looking at a longer school day as the PM has suggested, that is encouraging.”

Teachers’ unions had warned that plans to extend schooling hours could backfire. Geoff Barton, the general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said: ”We know that quality of teaching is more important than quantity. It will be vital that these proposals are properly resourced and don’t become an unsustainable burden on schools, leaders and teachers. And there will be many questions about exactly what the expectation will be over the content of longer school days.”

【1】What did the government officials think of the plan already announced?

A.It was a good try but limited itself.

B.It was well-designed but poorly conducted.

C.It was inspiring but the evidence was unreliable.

D.It was a failure but the methods deserved praise.

【2】What is Robert Halfon’s attitude toward expanding the school day?

    A.Favorable.

    B.Opposed.

    C.Indifferent.

    D.Ambiguous.

【3】Which of the following could be known from the passage?

A.The public has no expectation of the content of longer school days.

B.Quality of teaching should be attached more importance to than quantity.

C.All the work of the former education recovery chief fails to gain affirmation.

D.There are enough powerful evidences to confirm extending the school day is meaningful.

【4】What does the text mainly intend to tell us?

A.Extending the school day is proved to be right to do.

B.All are pulling together to tackle the education problem.

C.Experts are investigating the ways to extend the school day.

D.There are both pros and cons to extending the school day.

  • 24、   2020 is a leap year, and as we all know leap years happen every four years, right? Wrong. That extra day in February is designed to keep the earth in sync (同步的) with the seasonal year. But, what you might not realize is that the maths isn’t that simple and occasionally we have to wait eight years.

The method behind calculating when leap years occur might be a bit more complicated than you think. Way back in 1582 the calendar we now use was first applied. The Gregorian calendar was named after the authority at the time, Gregory XIV. The people who created it realized it wasn’t perfect to just add an extra day every four years.

Here’s where the maths comes in. A day, of course, is measured by the amount of time it takes for the earth to complete one full cycle on its axis (). A year is the number of days it takes the earth to orbit the sun, which most people assume is 365. However, the earth actually takes just under 365 and a quarter days to complete one full revolve (旋转) around the sun.

So, every four years we get an extra day, which falls on the 29th February. However, as mentioned earlier, it is in fact just under a quarter of a day. So, by rounding it up (四舍五入), we put the calendar out of sync again—which means that after a while we have too many days.

That imbalance has to be dealt with again, otherwise after 400 years you’d end up with three extra days. So back in 1582, they realized that every turn of a century should skip their extra day to remove those three extra days. This is why the years 1700, 1800, and 1900 weren’t leap years. But wait, there’s more. The year 2000, the millennium, was a leap year. That’s because over a period of four hundred years we only need to remove three days. So, every 400 years the turn of the century is a leap year.

The next time you hear someone saying “leap years happen every four years”, you can tell them why they’re wrong.

1What can we know from the first two paragraphs?

A.Leap years happen every four years.

B.Gregory XIV created the Gregorian calendar.

C.Sometimes we have to wait eight years for a leap year.

D.It was perfect to add an extra day every four years.

2What can be inferred from the text?

A.The concept of the current calendar was not known by people before 1582.

B.A day is the time that the earth takes to complete one full circle.

C.A year is the time that the earth takes to obit the sun.

D.The earth takes 365 and a quarter days to orbit the sun.

3Which of the following is a leap year?

    A.2100. B.2200. C.2300. D.2400.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.The definition of a leap year.

B.The purpose of designing leap years.

C.The time when the leap year was first applied.

D.The reason why not all leap years are every 4 years.

It was Susan’s 12th birthday. She had been expecting to receive a yo-yo (悠悠球) from her parents as her birthday gift for several months. However, she received a purple dress instead, which made her really disappointed.

“I only want a yo-yo as my birthday present. I don’t want the dress and I hate purple.” Susan shouted at her mother when she saw the dress. “Even a five-year-old child has a yo-yo. Do you know why others don’t want to be my friends? It is all because I don’t have a yo-yo. It is so boring to live in this house,” Susan said angrily.

Her mother ignored her complaints and changed the topic, saying, “Uncle Brown, Uncle Smith, Aunt Aniston and their children are coming for dinner tonight. So, you can play with your cousins.” “But, I don’t think there is anything interesting to play in the house.” Susan complained again.

The guests arrived at 6:00 pm. Susan guided the four children who came with the adults to her room. “Do you have any interesting toys? Susan...” asked Jim, one of the children. Susan felt that Jim was asking for a yo-yo. She felt embarrassed and brought out her Snakes and Ladders (蛇梯棋). All the children played the game together. Everyone enjoyed playing the game except Susan. After a little while, her cousin Sara asked, “Susan, can we go downstairs to the basement?” Susan said, “No, there is nothing interesting to play in it. Ignoring Susan’s words, the children raced to the basement excitedly. They found there were some empty cartons, ropes, old broken toys…” Upon seeing this, Sara came up with an idea- the memory game. She arranged a few things on the floor and closed her eyes. Then Jim took away an object randomly and Sara should guess what the missing object was.

    Paragraph 1:

When Susan arrived there later, she looked at the children in surprise.
