  • 21、Murcia

I have spent about 8 months living in Murcia and I feel that I should put it as number one on my list. On my return from exploring other cities, I always feel like I’m returning home when I set foot in Murcia. The city centre is full of life and energy and has an incredible atmosphere all year round. Although the accent takes you a little time to get used to at first, you will adjust to it. Murcia is also home to some gorgeous(壮丽的) beaches and amazing coastal views. So it really does have the best of both worlds!

    Gibraltar

I visited Gibraltar during the Easter holidays and I was totally surprised by the beauty of Gibraltar! From a short cable car riding up to the top of the rock you are met with splendid views over the coast and the adorable monkeys which curiously come to greet you on your arrival. Make sure to hide all your food because they think it’s a gift for them!

    Valencia

Valencia is beautiful. It’s as simple as that! The river-area is so exciting and full of life, all the way up to the science museum and beaches. However, I was a little confused by the fact that the river had long been filled in and turned into a park, yet people still referred to it as The River.

    Alicante

I have spent many a weekend in Alicante, making the most of the beautiful beach in low season, before all the tourists arrive. May is the high season here, so I’d definitely recommend a visit in April, September, or October, just before or after the holiday season.

1What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 refer to?

    A. Murcia and other cities.

    B. The city centre and beautiful coasts.

    C. Gorgeous beaches and amazing coastal views.

    D. The incredible atmosphere and lovely homes of the city.

2Actually the adorable monkeys come to visitors to   .

    A. welcome them   B. send them gifts

    C. attract them   D. get something to eat

    3The River is now   .

    A. a park   B. a river

    C. beautiful beaches   D. the science museum

4When did the author visit Alicante?

    A. In May.   B. In October.

    C. In April.   D. In September.

  • 22、One moment it was quiet and calm in the forest, the next, the air was charge with tension. The elephant had heard the distant alarm calls of animals and her mood suddenly changed. I urged the elephant deeper into the forest. We sounded like a forest fire --- cracking, snapping, trailblazing. But through all the noise came a sharp warning cry. The elephant stopped and we heard it again --- the tell-tale call of a spotted deer.

I looked quickly around the shadows of the forest. Rays of sunlight shone through tree branches, beneath which the patchwork(交错)of green plants and shadows-within-shadows would make tiger stripes(条纹)look more attractive. Apart from an occasional noise from the elephant’s stomach, the forest was silent.

Gradually, the tension slipped from our bodies. The elephant seized a nearby branch and put it into its mouth. I reached forward and gently moved my hand over the elephant’s neck; there was a soft part, free of wrinkles and hairs, behind her ear.

This was my fourth time to sense the aura of the forest in Corbett, although I saw no tigers in the end. Located at the foot of the Himalayan mountains, Corbett is home to about 135 Bengal tigers, but the forest seemed to be guarding their whereabouts(出没处), a silent reminder of their secrecy and rarity. Still, I was happy enough touching the elephant behind the ear. If I had so desperately wanted to see a tiger, I could have gone to a zoo. After all, spotting tigers merely confirms their beauty; tracking them can make you aware of something more.

1Which of the following was a clear signal of alarm?

    A. The elephant stopped.

    B. A spotted deer called.

    C. The elephant seized a branch.

    D. The forest was silent for a while.

2The author begins his account of the tour in the forest mainly by _______.

    A. describing various sounds

    B. comparing different animals

    C. listing different activities

    D. introducing various plants

3What does the underlined part “to sense the aura” most probably mean?

    A. To see the diversity.

    B. To enjoy the scenery.

    C. To feel the atmosphere.

    D. To experience the freedom.

4How does the author feel after several visits to Corbett?

    A. Seeing a Bengal tiger is quite thrilling.

    B. It is very time-consuming to travel in Corbett.

    C. It is really worthwhile to study the animals in Corbett.

    D. The process of finding Bengal tigers is most appealing.

  • 24、   What should you think about when you try to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong or weak subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value.

Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at mental work or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills.

If you have had a part - time job on Saturday or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part - time job.

Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is bitter to face any weaknesses than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not feel sorry about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.

1The first paragraph of the passage is mainly about ________.

A.the indirect value of school work

B.the importance of being good at all subjects

C.knowing one’s strong or weak subjects at school

D.using school performance to help to choose a career

2In the writer’s opinion, for a student to have a part-time job is probably ________.

A.a good way to find out his weak points

B.one of the best ways of earning extra money

C.of great use for his work in the future

D.a waste of time he could have spent on study

3If a student’s school record is not good, according to the passage, he________ .

A.may do well in his future work

B.won’t be able to find a suitable job

C.may be a complete failure in the future

D.will regret not having worked harder at school

4The whole passage centers on ________.

A.knowing oneself in looking for a job

B.developing one’s abilities useful in school

C.gaining much knowledge by working hard at school

D.choosing a career according to what one is skilled in

From the first week of high school, my best friend, Tina, was always going out with the popular girls. At first I thought, “It’s okay, she’s just making new friends. But soon I realized that Tina wasn’t interested in me anymore. I’d lost my best friend. It really hurt me.

One day, I told Tina that we should stop pretending to be friends when we really weren’t anymore. I wasn’t trying to make her mad, but she was. After that, Tina started talking about me behind my back, telling people that I was bad. Some of our friends were on her side. I felt like she was taking them away from me.

The more I thought about it, the angrier I got. Finally, I took up a picture of Tina and drew lines on her face. I wrote “I hate this person” across the bottom. And then I did something I’ll always regret: I put it on a website which I thought was popular. I thought people would see it, and it felt good to work off the anger. A week later, Tina’s mom saw the picture. She called my mom, who made me take it off the website right away. However, it was already too late. Lots of people had seen it, and I was in a lot of trouble. That whole day, I felt terrible. I had to say sorry to Tina face to face. She said she accepted my apology, but I felt she was still angry with me.

Posting that picture was one of the worst decisions I had ever made.
