  • 21、An image is worth a thousand kilos? Okay, so maybe not a thousand kilos, exactly, but a study shows how a photo diary can keep dieters motivated, making them more likely to achieve their target weight.

Elias Kuzmar Daza, a medical professional from Colombia, studied the motivation levels of patients on weight loss programs at a nutrition clinic.

Different measurements were taken of the patients each week, including body mass index (指标) food and exercise diaries, etc. to record their progress. In addition, full-body photographs were taken each week, which proved to be very motivating and a key factor in patients completing the full program.

Over the course of the sixteen-week program, a full ninety percent of patients, aged between 16 and 72, saw the treatment through to the end, with seventy percent successfully meeting their weight loss aims. Among those monitored, one measurement proved particularly motivating: waistline.

This finding indicates that the majority of the patients who attended the clinic did so motivated by image, rather than any underlying condition. It should be pointed out that eighty percent of them were female.

Another useful finding of this study was that patients did not necessarily need to attend the clinic in person for the program to be effective. A support line was set up, which patients could call to submit their measurements. They also took and sent their own full-body photographs to the researcher. Fifty percent of patients completed the program in this way.

Summarizing the findings, Kuzmar says: “What patients want is a photo, rather than cold numbers.” These photos serve as visual confirmation that all their hard work is paying off, encouraging them on to further weight loss.

【1】What is the purpose of the study?

A.To show losing weight is very easy.

B.To compare several ways to lose weight.

C.To prove the effect of images in weight losing.

D.To see how many people can lose weight successfully.

【2】How many patients in the clinic reached their weight-loss goals?

    A.50%.

    B.70%.

    C.80%.

    D.90%.

【3】What can give people most motivation when they are trying to lose weight?

    A.Friends’ encouragement.

    B.Others’ strong muscles.

    C.Their slimmer waistline.

    D.Their standard blood pressure.

【4】What must the patients do to complete the weight-loss program?

A.Go to the clinic every week.

    B.Call to submit their measurements.

C.Report to the professional every day.

    D.Take full-body photographs each week.

  • 22、When cultural heritage sites disappear, they’re gone forever. However, they are being endangered at an alarming rate by rising seas (Venice), pollution (the Taj Mahal) and overtourism (Angkor Wat). Just to name a few.

But when we try to protect these heritage sites, we also have to face such thorny questions as “What part of the past is worth preserving and passing on to the next generations? What duty do we owe to the creations of our ancestors? What strength do we draw from their presence—and when, on the contrary, do they become a lead weight, preventing us from projecting ourselves into the future?”.

Humankind has answered these difficult questions differently in different places. In Dresden, Germany, the Frauenkirche was an 18th century church whose bell- shaped top was a landmark. In February, 1945, one of the most destructive bombing attacks of World War II killed more than 25, 000 people and reduced the city to ruins. As Dresden slowly rebuilt after the war, the Frauenkirche was left in ruins. But after German reunification, the church was reconstructed using many of its original materials, as a statement of peace and harmony.

Like the Frauenkircbe, Notre Dame, a landmark in Paris, which was destroyed by fire in 2019, is being rebuilt as close as possible to how it was before, including using the original and poisonous metal lead for the roof. That choice was controversial, as future choices are bound to be in the debate about how to restore and preserve historic buildings.

Perhaps, no one can claim to have the right answers on preservation. There may not even be right answers. What we will do is to continue to take care of important cultural heritage sites, as a matter of significance to humanity’s past, present and future.

【1】Which heritage site is suffering from too many visitors?

    A.Venice.

    B.Dresden.

    C.The Taj Mahal.

    D.Angkor Wat.

【2】Which of the following can replace the underlined word “thorny” in paragraph 2?

    A.Tough.

    B.Smart.

    C.Interesting.

    D.Important.

【3】What does the author dislike about the rebuilding of Notre Dame?

    A.The high rebuilding costs.

    B.The timing of reconstruction.

    C.The choice of certain material.

    D.The significance of preservation.

【4】What message does the author seem to convey in the text?

A.We should protect as many heritage sites as possible.

B.It is better to leave the damaged historic buildings alone.

C.Historic buildings should be rebuilt with the same materials.

D.Heritage sites serve as an important link among human beings.

  • 23、   You might easily gain access to fresh fruit and vegetables, but this isn’t the case in some parts of America. The U. S. has many areas that are considered as food deserts, which are defined as parts of the country short of fresh fruit, vegetables and other healthy food, usually found in poor areas.

Food deserts are urban areas where the nearest grocery store is more than 1 mile away, and rural areas where the nearest grocery store is more than 10 miles away. According to the USDA, 19 million Americans — or 6.2% of the population — live in places that can be considered as food deserts.

The issue isn’t necessarily about the difference in cost between healthy and unhealthy foods in these areas but it’s about a lack of access to healthy choices at all. And, with the lack of healthy food choices, these areas typically have a large supply of unhealthy foods sold at fast-food companies and convenience stores.

Eating unhealthy foods can lead to overweight, which puts people at risk for all kinds of major health issues, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and some cancers.

But some people, especially those who cannot afford a car, are stuck with eating what’s readily available. In the case of food deserts, it’s usually the type of food that can lead to overweight. Studies have shown that this is likely to be a problem in low-income areas. When money is not enough, people tend to buy foods that last longer and remove food waste, which is a waste of their limited income.

Lack of access is only one part of the problem, however. The bigger issue was likely the lack of education and nutritional knowledge in these communities, which prevents people with lower incomes from understanding the benefits of healthy eating.

While overweight is a significant issue in these communities, the cost of unhealthy eating isn’t just physical. A study found that 71 billion dollars in healthcare costs due to chronic (慢性的) diseases could be saved through healthier eating.

1What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?

A.6.2% of the Americans live in poor areas.

B.Some parts of the USA lack fresh vegetables.

C.Some people in America don’t need fresh fruit.

D.People in the food deserts buy fresh vegetables easily

2Why can fast-food companies sell large amounts of unhealthy food in the food deserts?

A.These areas are rich in unhealthy food materials.

B.The fast food sold in the food deserts are of lower cost.

C.Healthy food choices are unavailable in these areas.

D.People in these areas prefer unhealthy food to healthy food.

3We can learn from Paragraph 5 that the low-income people______.

A.are less likely to have overweight problems

B.are not delighted to prepare food for themselves

C.have to buy food that can be preserved longer

D.are used to eating food donated by food companies

4What stops people from understanding healthy eating benefits in the food deserts?

A.Their high healthcare cost due to the chronic diseases.

    B.Their long established eating habits.

C.The government’s lack of financial support.

D.Their lack of education and knowledge in nutrition.

  • 24、What do people do with their old out of date but still useful computers? Most people don’t know how to deal with them. They just don’t use them any longer. Finally, some companies are thinking of ways to bring down the number of old computers. Sony has agreed to help recycle old Sony products (产品). Dell, Hewlett parkard and other companies now also take back some old computers of their own brands.

In some countries, laws have been passed, too. Computer companies have to pay for collecting and recycling their used products. And 70% of the computer waste must be recycled. That will encourage computer companies to make computers which are easier and cheaper to repair and upgrade (升级).

Yet many people are throwing away good computers, while others cannot afford them at all. Hundreds of organizations are working on this problem. They collect and repair old computers. These repaired computers then go to schools, charities (慈善团体) or people who need them. Giving a used computer to one of these organizations can turn one person’s rubbish into someone else’s useful things and cut down waste, too.

【1】According to Paragraph 1, what do many people do with old computers?

    A.They repair them.

    B.They sell them.

    C.They send them to others.

    D.They stop using them.

【2】How many computer companies are mentioned in the first paragraph?

    A.One.

    B.Two.

    C.Three.

    D.Four.

【3】According to the laws in some countries, computer companies must________.

    A.recycle most of their products

    B.collect all their used products

    C.repair and upgrade old computers

    D.make more cheaper computers

【4】What is the main idea of this passage?

    A.Repairing old computers.

B.Encouraging computer companies to make cheap computers.

    C.Recycling old computers.

    D.Helping those who need computers.
