六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、As a child, I was really afraid of the dark and of getting lost. These fears were very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments.

Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded in my own room at night that scared me so much. There was never complete darkness, but always a streetlight or passing car lights, which made clothes on the back of a chair take on the shape of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the curtains(窗帘)seem to move when there was no wind. A very low sound in the floor would seem a hundred times louder than in the day. My imagination(想象)would lie very still so that the “enemy(敌人)” would not discover me.

Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get on the wrong one and be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn’t let the leaders out of my sight.

Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or accepted by others. Being popular was so important to me then, and the fear of not being liked was a serious one.

One of the processes(过程)of growing up is being able to realize and overcome our fears. Understanding the things that scared us as children helps us achieve greater success later in life.

【1】The author had _________ kind(s) of fears when she was a child.

    A.one

    B.two

    C.three

    D.none

【2】__________ would scare the author at night.

    A.Streetlights and car lights

    B.Wild animals and enemies

    C.Moving curtains and wind

    D.Strange sights and sounds

【3】When she went to some other places, she would _________.

    A.walk away without others

    B.take a bus by herself

    C.follow others closely

D.make sure not to take a wrong bus

【4】The underlined word “overcome” means “_______” in Chinese.

    A.接受

    B.忍受

    C.信服

    D.克服

【5】From this story we learn that it’s important to __________.

    A.care for others

    B.share with others

    C.help others

    D.scare others

  • 22、The next time you are out walking your dog, be sure to keep your eyes on the ground. Maybe you can find some treasures. That is exactly what happened to a California couple who recently happened to find the most valuable ancient gold in North America.

John and Mary, a couple, lived in Northern California’s Gold Country. One day they were walking their dog along the road as usual. However, this time around, John noticed a rusty bottle sticking out(凸出) from the ground. They decided to take a closer look, and then they unearthed it with a stick and took it home.

The can(罐) was very heavy, making the couple guess that it was filled with paint(油漆). However, when John opened it and saw the side of a shiny coin, he knew he had found gold!

The couple immediately returned to the area with a small shovel to see if there were any more bottles to be found. Sure enough, they found one more. This one had broken and scattered(散开) all its treasures into the ground below. And that was not all—over the next few days the couple found six more in the area.

According to the dates of the coins, as well as, the condition of the metal cans, experts believe that the gold was buried(埋) sometime in the late 19th century, right after the California’s Gold Rush. John thought that the can that was sticking out, was a mark for whoever buried the treasure there—For reasons that nobody will ever know, he/she never returned to get it back.

【1】What does the first paragraph mainly tell us?

A.We should look at the ground while walking.

    A.Paint.

    B.Drink.

    A.One.

  • 24、   I enjoyed my 20-day winter holiday at home in Hong Kong.

My flight from New York to Hong Kong was 15 hours long.I remember that my first 15-hour flight to New York never seemed to come to an end. Sitting in a crowded area with no clean air beside a stranger was no fun. However, by now I love the flights to Hong Kong very much. I know that I'm getting closer to home every second of every minute of every hour I spend on the plane.

My winter holiday this year was quite different from last year's. Last year it was my first year in the USA and I was so excited to be back in Hong Kong.I went out every day with my friends, and only went home in time for dinner with my family. This year, to my parents' surprise, I quickly agreed to go somewhere else for a holiday. It's been over a year since I left my school in Hong Kong. This year, I found myself saying “no” to invitations to parties with friends.I decided that spending time with family was better than going out with friends. It is clear that we haven't become so close to each other. I am sad because I've lost some friends. But I still had a wonderful time at home with my family members.
