21、 The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB), the major construction work on the world’s cross-sea bridge, which connects Zhuhai in Guangdong Province with Hong Kong and Macao, was completed on Oct 23, 2018. Construction began in December 2009 at Zhuhai. The Y-shaped bridge starts from Lantau Island in Hong Kong with branches to Zhuhai and Macao.
More than 400000 tons of steel have been used for the 6.7 km undersea tunnel land 22.9 km bridge, enough to build 60 Eiffel Towers. British newspaper The Guardian named the mega structure ( 巨 型 建 筑 ) one of its “seven wonders of the modern world near completion.”
The bridge will cut travel time from Hong Kong to both Zhuhai and Macao from the current three hours by road or one hour by sea to a half-hour drive. It will bring people in Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong within a “one-hour living circle”, which is expected to attract more visitors to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The bridge will not only be a transport link. “It will be a social, economic, cultural, and tourism connection ( 联 系 ) among the three areas.” said Yu Lic, deputy director of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Authority.
Su Quanke chief engineer with the administration bureau of the bridge, said the project has made history in many aspects. “With a series of world advanced anti-erosion (抗腐蚀) and earthquake-resistant measures, the bridge can be used for 120 years,” he said. “If it were not for the progress of ‘Made in China’, we couldn’t possibly complete the construction in such a short time, The China technology and China standard set by the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge will influence ( 影响) the world market.”

22、 Chinese people are eating too much salt. On average, people in China eat about 10. 5 grams of salt each day, much higher than the 6 grams recommended(建议)by Chinese Dietary Guidelines(2016).
China now has one of the highest salt intakes(摄入量) in the world. To fix this, China had the first salt reduction(减少) guide for its food industry.
If the guide is followed properly, the average salt intake for Chinese people will drop by 20 percent by 2030. The guide calls for food companies to lower the salt content in their products by improving their production techniques(技术) and adjusting(调整) flavors.
The salt we take in mainly comes from processed(加工的)food. For example, a 104-gram can of Lay’s classic potato chips has about 0. 66 grams of salt in it, which accounts for over 10 percent of the recommended daily salt intake. A 100-gram bag of Kangshifu instant noodles has nearly 2 grams of salt.
A small amount of salt makes food taste better and is important for good health, but eating too much increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks(心脏病)and strokes(中风), the Xinhua News Agency reported.
Less salt leads to better health. And there’s no need to worry that food will be less tasty in the future. A study by the Monell Chemical Senses Center in the United States found that it’s easy for people to reduce their salt intake. Although you may think your food is not salty enough at first, your taste buds(味蕾) will gradually get used to it and you will feel that your food tastes the same as it did before.

23、 In 1939 two brothers, Mac and Dick McDonald, started a drive-in restaurant in San Bernadino, California. They carefully chose a busy corner for their location. They had run their own businesses for years, first a theater, then a barbecue (烤肉) restaurant, then another drive-in. But in their new operation, they offered a new, shortened menu: French fries, hamburgers, and sodas. To this small selection they added one new concept: quick service, no waiters or waitresses, and no tips.
Their hamburgers sold for fifteen cents. Cheese was another four cents. Their French fries and hamburgers had a remarkable uniformity, for the brothers had developed a strict routine for the preparation of their food, and they insisted on their cooks’ sticking to their routine. Their new drive-in became incredibly popular, particularly for lunch. People drove up by the hundreds during the busy noontime. The self-service restaurant was so popular that the brothers had allowed ten copies of their restaurant to be opened. They were content with this modest success until they met Ray Kroc.
Kroc was a salesman who met the McDonald brothers in 1954, when he was selling milkshake-mixing machines. He quickly saw the unique appeal of the brothers’ fast-food restaurants and bought the right to franchise (特许经营) other copies of their restaurants. The agreement struck included the right to duplicate the menu. The equipment, even their red and white buildings with the golden arches (拱门).
Today McDonald’s is really a household name. Its names for its sandwiches have come to mean hamburger in the decades since the day Ray Kroc watched people rush up to order fifteen-cent hamburgers. In 1976, McDonald’s had over $1 billion in total sales. Its first twenty-two years is one of the most incredible success stories in modern American business history.

24、 In the United States and Canada, there are over 6,000 museums, almost twice as many as there were 25 years ago. However, they have changed a lot. They are no longer places where one “should” go-they are places to enjoy.
At a science museum in Canada, you can feel your hair stand on end as harmless electricity passes through your body. At the Children’s Museum in New York, you can play an African drum. There are no “Do Not Touch” signs in some other museums in the USA.
More and more museum directors (馆长) have realized that people learn best when they can become part of what they are seeing. In many science museums, the visitors are encouraged to touch, listen, and experiment so as to find scientific rules for themselves.
The old museums have been changing and the government is encouraging the building of new, modern museums. One cause of all these changes is the growing number of young people in the population.
