六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Billions of locusts (蝗虫) are moving through farms and fields in the East African countries of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia.

Locusts are grasshoppers (蚱蜢). Normally grasshoppers don't travel in groups so they do little harm. But when there are lots of them, their bodies and behavior change. That’s when they become locusts. Locusts travel in huge groups,

laying eggs along the way, which produces even more locusts. In a single day, a small swarm (群) of the insects can eat as much food as 35 ,000 people do.

The locust swarms in Ethiopia and Somalia are the worst in 25 years. These locusts are desert locusts. They began swarming about six months ago. By moving with the winds, desert locusts can travel up to 90 miles a day or more.

Locust swarms are more common when heavy rains follow a long dry period. The insects lay their eggs in the wet ground. This season, East Africa has had its heaviest rainy season in 40 years.

When the insects swarm (成群地飞来飞去), one square kilometer of land can hold as many as 150 million locusts. There are 700 square kilometers of land covered by the insects in Kenya alone.

The insects are a threat to lives in the regions, where food is already in short supply. Already many farmers who keep animals are struggling because locusts have eaten up the plants the animals usually live on

In East Africa, farmers have been shooting into the air or making noises in the fields, but that doesn’t work against so many insects. Experts say that spraying pesticides (杀虫剂) over large areas from airplanes is the only way to reduce the number of the insects. The UN has released (释放) $ 10 million to help deal with the locust problem. The UN says about $70 million is needed to truly control the locusts with pesticides.

    【1】Which is TRUE about locusts?

  • 24、These days, more and more students in the UK are taking a “gap year” between their graduation(毕业)from high school and their university(大学)studies. This means that they take a year off, to do something else, before they start their studies.

For most students, spending time in foreign countries is the favourite activity-and Australia is the favourite place to go.

Many parents, teachers and business people agree that travelling can teach important values(价值). Just like the 20-year-old young man William said, “During the gap year, I learnt to solve different problems all by myself and began to realize the importance of getting along with people of different cultures.”

There are many companies around the world that welcome these students on their projects-helping people in poorer countries, or even in your home country. Although(尽管)you don’t get paid for your work, this kind of work can teach important skills-decision making and finding ways to problems, for example-that will help a student in a job one day.

Finally, the knowledge and experience you get will one day be very useful in an area you hope to study or work in.

If several university graduates(毕业生)are making applications for the same job, gap year work experience allows you to say, “I’ve already had some experience of this kind of work.” And that can help you get the job!

【1】More and more students in the UK are taking a “gap year” ________.

A.before they graduate from high school

    B.before they graduate from university

C.before getting a job after graduating from university

【2】What is the favourite activity for most students in the UK?

    A.Spending time in Australia.

    B.Spending time in the UK.

    C.Spending time with their teachers.

    D.Spending time with their parents.

【3】What can’t students get in gap year work in the writer’s opinion?

    A.Values.

    B.Skills.

    C.Experience.

    D.Money.

【4】What’s the best title of the passage?

    B.Take a year off

    C.Apply for a job

    D.Travel
