六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   “Volunteering makes you look at the world differently. You see how little things can change a person’s life for the better.” Mason, a volunteer said.

National Volunteer Week started in 1974 and it is a good chance to encourage people to take their first step to become a volunteer. Making the decision to take the first step can be the biggest problem, because they often wonder if they will be able to meet the organization’s expectations(期望). Some people fear not knowing anyone else in the group. Not having enough time also stops some people from becoming volunteers.

The following tips can help if you have some of these worries.

Start out slowly, don’t add too much pressure.

Choose an organization with the same interests.

Take part in a training meeting for new volunteers, even if it is not asked.

Work with a veteran volunteer. He volunteered a lot, he can help you be confident and completely understand the organization’s expectations.

Invite a friend or family member to serve. It is a good experience to volunteer with them.

Finally, it is most important to enjoy the volunteer experience and to remember that not all volunteer experiences are perfect.

Spend some time on volunteer work and you will see great changes in people’s lives.

    1Volunteering can help ________.

    A. make a decision B. see the world clearly

    C. thank other people D. make person’s life better

  • 22、   Everyone likes gifts. Some little kids think they don’t get enough gifts. Some old people think they get too many gifts. Different people like different kinds of gifts. Some presents are never too small. A little child may give his mother a leaf from a tree. It is enough to make her very happy.

Gift giving is different in different countries. In Japan, when people receive a special gift, they do not open it. Later, the same gift may be given away to someone else. Many people have enough things and don’t want too many gifts themselves. In Canada, many people will not give big gifts to someone else. They will pay for a park bench or a tree to help remember a person. In the USA, some people ask their families and friends to give money to charity rather than buy them gifts. In Sweden, doing something for someone is the best gift. People don’t need to spend too much money. Instead, making a meal is enough.

1Not everyone in the world likes gifts.

2Some little kids hope to get more gifts.

3A present is never too small.

4Japanese people give the gift they have gotten to someone else without opening it.

5In the USA, doing something for someone is the best gift.

  • 23、Do you get angry when your friends sing loudly? Or when your best friend does not wait for you after school?

If you do, you need to control (控制) your feelings and stop getting angry so easily. Getting angry easily can make you lose friends.

Gary Egeberg, an American high school teacher, wrote My Feelings are Just Like Wild Animals to help you control your feelings. It tells teens how to stay cool when bad things happen to them. The book says that getting angry only makes problems worse. It can not make them better. “Getting angry is not a natural way to act,” the book says. It is just a bad habit, like smoking. The book says you can control your anger easily, and all you have to do is to tell yourself not to be angry.

When a baby falls over, it cries only when people are watching it. Like a baby, you can only get angry if you are sure it is the right thing to do.

The book gives many suggestions to help you if you get angry easily. Here are the top three.

①Keep a record. Every time you get angry, write down why you are angry. Look at it later and you will see you get angry too easily.

②Ask your friends to stop talking to you when you get angry. This will teach you not to be angry.

③Do something different. When you get angry, walk away from the problem and go somewhere else. Try to laugh!

If only I had followed Mom’s advice

The major theme of my summer this year has been “going back home”. I went back to China as soon as school was over, at the end of June. I returned to Canada on August 17.

Going back to China this summer was not easy, because of the A (H1N1) flu. Everybody seemed to be terrified. The easiest thing to do was to wear masks on the plane, as my mom suggested. However, it was difficult to wear a mask for 10 hours. The idea was more horrifying than catching the flu! In the end I decided I’d take the masks onto the plane, but not wear them.

Everything seemed okay during the flight. I saw only five people were wearing masks all the time. “Comfort is always the first thing,” I said to myself. When we arrived in Beijing some people came on the plane and took our temperature. Fortunately, nobody had a fever. Therefore, I was able to get home on time.

Unluckily, everything went wrong after I got home. I became sick, with a sore throat and a fever. The horrible image of the flu suddenly hovered in front of me, laughing at me, calling me an ill-behaved child because I had not followed my mom’s words. Luckily, I just had a common cold; probably it was due to the stale air inside the plane cabin. While I was sick in bed, I sighed sadly. If I had listened to my mom in the first place, I probably would have never caught the cold.

It’s always wise to listen to your mom’s suggestions.

【3】How many people were wearing masks all the time during the fight?

    D.All of the passengers.

【4】Did the author catch the flu?
