  • 21、   In your spare time, what do you usually do? Many people choose to be couch potatoes, but not Luo Han, a 9-year-old from Changsha, Hunan. Luo Han completes at least two hours of outdoor activities every day and has raised a wave of discussion online. Although he is in primary school, he has already mastered sports like kayaking and paddling. His talent for outdoor sports is due to his father Luo Ge, who actively encourages him to enjoy nature, rather than focus only on his learning. After noticing that Luo Han did not go out for enough exercise after school, his father took him to do outdoor activities every day. Many applauded them.

“Exercise can ease brain fog and improve memory. Many students feel stressed about school work, so outdoor activities can help us keep our moods uplifted and improve our learning efficiency (效率),” said Liu Yu, 18, a university freshman.

Wang Tao, a parent of a 16-year-old, showed her support for the father. “It’s more than a way to relax. It’s a training of willpower (意志力),” she said. Her son He Xin, from Hefei Thomas School, Anhui, is a fan of outdoor sports. Although facing increasing pressure in his studies, he has joined the school’s athletic programs.

However, some have also expressed their concerns. “Two hours isn’t too much for a 9-year-old, but it might be difficult for high school students to guarantee (保证) this block of time when school becomes more demanding,” said Huang Xi, 16, from Liyang High School of Jiangsu Province.

Ms. Zhu, who has a daughter in middle school, also agreed that two hours is too much for most parents, especially on weekdays. “When I am off from work, I need to do housework. After my daughter finishes her homework, she prefers to watch TV. Neither of us would think of going outside for exercise,” Zhu said.

Other parents are concerned about the safety of outdoor activities. Zhang Zhijin has a son in high school. “Sometimes, teenagers can do crazy and risky things. We worry about accidents,” Zhang said.

  • 22、Scientists know where earthquakes are likely to take place. But it is difficult for them to predict how strong an earthquake will be. Now,American researchers have found it possible to predict the strength of future quakes.

The earth’s crust — the outermost surface — is made up of large plates. As many as 20 plates cover the earth. They move slowly, sometimes sliding under one another and causing the earthquakes.

Timothy H.Dixon is a geologist (地质学家) in the University of South Florida, who studies rocks and soil to understand the earth. He and other scientists are using global positioning system,or GPS,to measure what he calls “slowslip” events.

Timothy Dixon says that while people can’t feel a building breaking off, sometimes deadly earthquakes will happen. The big Japan earthquake in 2011 and the Sumatra earthquake and tsunami in 2004 are the kind, and they are the real killers. So what we think these slowslip events are telling us is that they’re letting off steam in areas where there is a break. And if they let off enough steam, the areas won’t crack.“The more of the areas that break,” he says,“the more powerful the earthquake is.”

The scientists set up a number of GPS receivers 15 years ago in Costa Rica to measure the “slowslip” events, which take place only every year or two.The last one was three months before an earthquake in 2012.

You know an earthquake is more or less inevitable.People always want to know when an earthquake is going to happen. This technology cannot predict that. But Timothy Dixon says even if you don’t know exactly when it’s going to happen, since you know it’s going to happen, and you know how big it’s going to be,you can prepare accordingly.

【1】According to the passage, what can scientists predict about earthquakes at present?

A.We can’t predict when an earthquake happens forever.

B.His new findings will prevent earthquakes happening.

C.His new findings will help people reduce damage caused by earthquake.

D.His new findings have been used in researching earthquakes.

【4】What is the purpose of the author in writing this passage?

A.To tell us the reason why an earthquake can happen.

B.To tell us that the strength of an earthquake can be predicted in the future.

D.To tell us the advantage of knowing the strength of future earthquakes.

  • 23、My daughter Alisa was born blind in her right eye and was bullied (欺侮) pretty severely in school. So I quitted my job as a babysitter and then schooled my daughter heart and soul at home.

A year ago a boy of 14 befriended my daughter on Facebook after reading something Alisa wrote about bullying. Today he messaged her and asked if she would like six tickets to a Colorado Rockies baseball game. They have never met in person but she said, “Sure! That would be great.”

Then I received a call from his mother explaining why her son had chosen my daughter. She said he thought my daughter deserved them because of all the good she did in the community. Her son, she explained, had experienced a similar situation and was also home schooled.

What she said is true. Now my daughter Alisa continues to teach groups of girls in trouble in our community how to look within themselves for the positive and how to be their own person.

Everything taken into consideration, we decided to meet the mother and the boy at a local bike shop. After meeting, the boy approached my car and my daughter gave him a hug and thanked him for his generosity. She told him that she had never been to a baseball game and that she was going to take her entire family, including myself, her dad, little sister, her cousin and an aunt who has brain cancer.

We all thanked one another, got in our car, and went our way. As we drove home my daughter opened the envelope. Inside it were the tickets and $100 each to buy hot dogs, pay for parking and not have any worries but a great time.

My daughter has always been the giver and now she and our family are the receivers and I can not tell you how incredibly honored we feel to be on the other end. What an incredible young man to have such a kind idea.

  • 24、I have been a professional skateboarder for 24 years. For much of that time, the activity that paid my rent and gave me my greatest joy was marked with many labels, most of which were ugly.

When I was about 17, three years after I turned pro-skater, my high school “careers” teacher scolded me and told me that I would never make it in the workplace if I didn’t follow directions clearly. He said I’d never make a living as a skateboarder, so it seemed to him that my future was bleak.

Even during those dark years, I never stopped progressing as a skater. There have been many times when I’ve been frustrated because I can’t join in some formal training. I’ve come to realize that the only way to master something is to keep it -- despite the bloody knees, twisted ankles, or mocking crowds.

So here I am, 38 years old, a husband and father of three, with a lengthy list of responsibilities and obligations. And although I have many job titles -- CEO, Executive Producer, Senior Consultant, Foundation Chairman, Bad Actor -- the one I am most proud of is “Professional Skateboarder”. My youngest son’s pre-school class was recently asked what their dads do for work. My son said, “I’ve never seen my dad do work.”

It’s true. Skateboarding doesn’t seem like real work, but I’m proud of what I do. My parents never once questioned the practicality behind my passion. I hope to pass on the same lesson to my children someday. So, find the thing you love. My 13-year-old son is really gifted skater, but there’s a lot of pressure on him. He used to skate for recognition, but now he brushes all that stuff aside. He just skates for fun and that’s good enough for me.

【1】What does the underlined word “bleak” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Uncertain.

    B.Special.

    C.Glorious.

    D.Impressive.

【2】What did the author find most important according to Paragraph 3?

    A.Keeping to his promise.

    B.Adapting to school life.

    C.Moving to better places.

    D.Sticking to his own choice.

【3】Why did the author mention his son’s words?

    A.To show his son’s cleverness

B.To suggest his son’s dislike of his work.

C.To stress the features of his job in his son’s eyes.

D.To indicate his son’s care for his work and life.

【4】What does the author want to convey in the text?

    A.Neglect what others think.

    B.Do the things you love.

C.Set a good example for parents.

D.Be what your parents want you to be.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

My family moved from Taiwan to a small town in central Georgia, where my dad got a visa for his family and a job. I had just learned English, and from what little I could gather from my friends, Santa Claus would come down one’s chimney and put toys in one’s stocking on Christmas Eve! What a great country, I thought. After I looked up “stocking” in my Chinese-English dictionary, I knew what I had to do and always expected that day.

Finally, the big day came. On that wonderful night, after everyone went to bed, I sneaked out of bed, took my longest, cleanest knee sock and attached it to a nail already on the mantel (壁炉). Obviously, the previous owners of this house were no strangers to this Santa character. Gazing at the sock and imagining the delicately-packed gift in it, I couldn’t help giggling (咯咯笑). For the first time, I found it hard to fall asleep.

And for the first time, I woke up before everyone else in the early morning. Then I headed straight to the fireplace and was even ready for what to say after seeing the gift. However, what happened next was the least thing I wanted to mention. On the nail was the empty and lonely sock. I was hit with the reality of the empty sock and the biggest lie ever told. I tried my best to hold back my tears but failed. Bursting into tears, I quickly took down the sock and stuffed it in the back of a drawer.

Every December since then, the topic of Christmas memories would unavoidably come up, and I would amuse my friends with my poor-little-me story. I had to make it as funny as possible, or else I would cry once again. I didn’t know whether any of my audience ever noticed the sparkling tears hidden in my eyes.

How could I know that Santa was just late? Nine years ago, on Christmas Eve, I heard a knock on the door when I was watching TV. Unwillingly, I dragged my feet and opened the door.
