  • 21、Body Language Communication: What It Shows

We use body language whenever we communicate face to face. It’s a nonverbal language that emphasizes the meaning of the direct language we use. The following body language examples are common. 【1】.

    Smile

Smiles can mean different things, depending on the exact facial expressions. 【2】. Have you ever heard of the term “smiling eyes”? Some people are really good at sending a smile through direct eye contact. When you display an authentic smile, you let people know you’re approachable and friendly.

    【3】

When touching your nose with your index finger, you appear dishonest. If you do it in a conversation that requires openness and honesty, you’ll have trouble accomplishing your goals. And, if you see someone else rubbing his or her nose, it’s a good indication that you need to be careful not to believe everything he or she tells you automatically.

Cross your arms across the chest

Your arms are perhaps one of the first types of nonverbal communication that people notice when they see you. Universally, people view a person that crosses arms as insecure, annoyed or closed off. 【4】. However, if you see someone with their arms crossed for a long period of time, it could indicate that the temperature is too cold.

    Cross your legs

【5】. If you cross them at the knee but point your knees away from other people, you show you’re uncomfortable with them. In most cases, the best option is to plant your feet firmly on the floor.

    A.You may appear angry

    B.Rub or touch your nose

    C.Touch your face frequently

D.It’s usually easy to get their meanings once you learn them

E.There are happy smiles, shy smiles, warm smiles and so on

F.If you cross them across the chest, it may show you’re trying to hide something

G.The way you cross your legs can tell others how you’re feeling at any given moment

  • 23、   As a student starting your senior high school year, there is no doubt that you may feel both excited and anxious. How do you make a great impression on the first day of school? Here are some simple ways that may help you.

Try to be friendly and outgoing to make new friends, and show your teachers you’re prepared for the school year.1 If you aren’t given a school supply list, bring a notebook and pencils on the first day so you’re prepared.

Get a full night’s rest before the first day of school. If you show up tiered, you’re not going to have the energy to perform well.2 For example, if you know you need to wake up at 7:00 am, try to be in bed by 10:30 or 11:00 pm.

3 If you’re only in one classroom for the whole day, get to school in the morning a few minutes early so you have to find out where your class is and what to do with your things. If you go to multiple classrooms throughout the day, try to get to each one on time to make a good impression on your teacher.

Smile often.4 The first day of school is also a great chance to reach out to new people you may not know, so introduce yourself to others with a big smile and possibly you will make a new friend.

The first day of school sets the tone (定调子) for the rest of the year, so it’s also important to have learning goals and make plans for your studies.5 Listen carefully when your teacher speaks, and don’t forget to take notes in class.

A.Get to school early to arrive at your classes on time.

B.Set your alarm clock so that you wake up on time.

C.It is important to make a good impression on the first day of school.

D.When you smile, people will feel more comfortable and want to talk to you.

E.Write down any assignments (作业) you have and complete your homework on time.

F.Your school will be likely to give you a list of supplies you’ll need for the school year.

G.When your classmates say thanks to you with a big smile, you’ll find it’s the best time in your school life.

  • 24、Dreams are expressions of thoughts, feelings and events that pass through our minds while we are sleeping. People dream about one to two hours each night. We may have four to seven dreams in one night. Everybody dreams. But only some people can remember their dreams.

The word “dream” comes from an old word in English that means “joy” and “music”. We dream in color. Our dreams often include all the senses—smells, sounds, sights, tastes and things we touch. Sometimes we dream the same dream over and over again. These repeated dreams are often unpleasant. They are bad dreams that sometimes frighten us.

Artists, writers and scientists sometimes say they get ideas from dreams. For example, the singer Paul McCartney of the Beatles said he awakened one day with the music for the song Yesterday in his head. The writer Mary Shelley said she had a very strong dream about a scientist using a machine to make an animal come alive. When she woke up, she began to write her book about a scientist named Frankenstein who made a frightening monster(妖怪).

In China, people believed that dreams were a way to visit with family members who had died. Some native American tribes(部落) and Mexican civilizations believe dreams are a different world we visit when we sleep.

1How do people feel when they dream the same dream?

    A. Lucky.   B. Tired.

    C. Relaxed.   D. Frightened.

2What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

    A. Dreams are boring.   B. Dreams are scary.

    C. Dreams are helpful.   D. Dreams are real.

3What do Chinese people think of the dream?

    A. Dreaming is bad for life.

    B. They can visit their dead family member.

    C. Dream is another world for them

    D. Dream means good luck.

4What may be the best title of the passage?

    A. Useful dreams.   B. Dreams.

    C. Bad dreams.   D. New ideas from dre
