二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Chinese audiences seemed not to have been satisfied with the third season of the highly anticipated food documentary A Bite of China.

Even though the series has maintained high viewership ratings since its comeback last week, much higher than other programs aired at the same time, the ranking on Douban, a social networking website featuring films, literature and events, slipped to 4.2 out of 10, as of Tuesday, compared with 9.3 and 8.4, respectively, for the first two seasons.

Picky viewers complain that some of the narration is not accurate, while others pinpoint misleading content. At the same time, food blogger @barbara questioned whether it is appropriate to give a close-up shot of the poisonous plant Nandina(南天竺)in a food program.

A Bite of China, which debuted in 2012, became hugely popular nationwide for its quality introduction of some rarely-known and mouth-watering domestic cuisine. In the new show, however, watchers are not satisfied with “irrelevant” food references, such as lipsticks made of Chinese traditional medicine and martial arts master.

The first episode introduced a hand-made iron frying pan from east China’s Shandong province, which prompted thousands of Chinese Internet users to buy one from China’s leading e-commerce website Tmall in the next few days. Sales of the pan at “Zhensanhuan” surged 6,000 times compared with a year ago, according to Beijing Youth Daily.

In response to overwhelming criticism and questions, A Bite of China production crew responded on Weibo that they seek innovation despite the risks following the first two phenomenal seasons.

“It is unavoidable to make comparisons with the first two, and some audiences may not accept the changes,” the crew said. “We explore the culture and civilization behind food, and give food a historic touch. That’s why we feature culinary(烹饪的)tools, feast and rituals, as well as a healthy diet to show Chinese wisdom and philosophy, which has not been shown in any food programs before.”

【1】Why does the passage mention Nandina?

A.Because some of the narration is not accurate.

B.Because it may be improper to give a close-up shot of a poisonous plant.

    C.Because it is misleading content.

D.Because it is not attractive at all to most picky viewers.

【2】Which of the following elements leads to viewers’ dissatisfaction with the new show?

    A.some mouth-watering domestic cuisines

    B.food-unrelated items

    C.some rarely-known cuisines

D.the increasing sales of the pan at “Zhensanhuan”

【3】According to its production crew, what is unique to ‘A Bite of China III’?

A.It makes comparisons with the first two episodes.

B.It tells the story of some martial arts related to food.

C.It receives overwhelming criticism and questions from audience.

D.It focuses on cooking tools, rituals and healthy eating.

【4】What is the best the title for the passage?

A.'A Bite of China III' Draws Criticism from Audiences

B.'A Bite of China III' Maintains High Viewership Ratings

C.'A Bite of China III' Changes for the Worse

D.'A Bite of China III' Explains its Purposes

  • 23、It is a phenomenon known as the “first-night” effect that people often experience trouble sleeping in a different bed in unfamiliar surroundings. If a person stays in the same room the following night they tend to sleep more soundly. Yuka Sasaki and her colleagues at Brown University set out to investigate the origins of this effect.

Dr. Sasaki knew the first-night effect probably has something to do with how humans evolved. The puzzle was what benefit would be gained from it when performance might be affected the following day. She also knew from previous work conducted on birds and dolphins that these animals put half of their brains to sleep at a time so that they can rest while remaining watchful enough to avoid predators. This led her to wonder if people might be doing the same thing.

To take a closer look, her team studied 35 healthy people as they slept in the unfamiliar environment of the university's Department of Psychological Sciences. The participants each slept in the department for two nights and were carefully monitored with techniques that looked at the activity of their brains. Dr. Sasaki found, as expected, the participants slept less well on their first night than they did on their second, taking more than twice as long to fall asleep and sleeping less overall. During deep sleep, the participants' brains behaved in a similar manner seen in birds and dolphins. On the first night only, the left hemispheres of their brains did not sleep nearly as deeply as their right hemispheres did.

Curious if the left hemispheres were indeed remaining awake to process information detected in the surrounding environment, Dr. Sasaki re-ran the experiment while presenting the sleeping participants with a mix of regularly timed beeps of the same tone and irregular beeps of a different tone during the night. She worked out that, if the left hemisphere was staying watchful to keep guard in a strange environment, then it would react to the irregular beeps by stirring people from sleep and would ignore the regularly timed ones. This is precisely what she found.

【1】What did the researchers find puzzling about the “first-night” effect?

A.To what degree it can trouble people.

B.In what way it can be beneficial.

C.What role it has played in evolution.

D.What circumstances may lead to it.

【2】What do we learn about Dr. Yuka Sasaki doing her research?

A.She found birds and dolphins remain watchful while asleep.

B.She found birds and dolphins sleep in much the same way.

C.She got some idea from previous studies on birds and dolphins

D.She conducted studies on birds' and dolphins' sleeping patterns.

【3】What did Dr. Sasaki find about the participants in her experiment?

A.They tended to enjoy certain tones more than others.

B.They tended to perceive irregular beeps as a threat.

C.They felt sleepy when exposed to regular beeps.

D.They differed in their tolerance of irregular tones.

【4】Which section of a magazine is the passage probably taken from?

    A.Science.

    B.Entertainment.

    C.Culture.

    D.Adventure.

  • 24、Teaching your child to cook is not hard; the hard part could be getting them out of the kitchen. When you are teaching them, remember to stress safety and cleanliness, after all these are skills they will need for many years into the future.

Start by finding simple no-cook recipes. A salad or other no-cook recipe is an ideal way to start. Show your child how to hold, and cut with knives. Make sure they know how to wash everything in hot soapy water as they use it, so that it becomes a habit that is part of the process and not an extra chore to do after they have finished.

If possible, find one of the good children’s cookbooks that are available. Many of these have simple recipes that demonstrate the basic cooking terms such as chop, mix, and stir. When it is practical, you may as well have your child help you prepare meals. Even a small child can get bowls out, pour, and start learning to measure. A two- year -old child can stir a batter(面糊), or taste the results.

Allow your older child to find a recipe that they think sounds nice. Go over the recipe with them as you discuss the steps needed, and how to adjust any ingredients to match your budget, and family preferences.

When you go shopping have your child help find the necessary ingredients for their ‘special’ recipe. When it is time to make the recipe, allow them to do as much as possible, only helping out if asked or when they run into trouble. Be sure to praise their efforts even if they are not perfect. After the results are gone, talk about any problems, and see if there is a solution.

Most children like to cook, and if they are part of deciding what to cook, as well as the preparation they will be well on the way to being good cooks.

【1】The author wants to say in the passage that__________.

Ait is a pleasure to cook with your children

    Cparents should perform their duty

Dit is no good cooking with children

    ABecause children are often careless

BBecause we must keep them free of danger

CBecause they will develop good habits

DBecause they think cooing is hard

3What should you do when cooking is finished?

AGive praise in good time to your child.

BHave a taste of what has been made.

CAvoid mentioning any mistakes he/she made.

DHelp them out of any difficult situation.
