  • 22、   Nao, a small robot, looks like a person. If Nao begged you not to shut it off, what would you do?

Scientists did a study to see how people treat robots that act like people. Eighty-nine people volunteered for the study. They were asked to help to improve Nao’s social skills by finishing two tasks with it.

The tasks with the robot didn’t matter, though. What the scientists really wanted to see was how the participants reacted once the tasks were over. They were asked to talk with Nao and finally shut Nao off but it was not easy to do. Some people did not want to turn the robot off while others took a long time to do it.

People often communicate with non-human objects such as TVs and computers nowadays. But robots seem more like humans. Robots can show social characters themselves, like speaking with human voices or taking the shape of a human body. Scientists said people might have seen Nao’s cries as a sign of independent thought. In turn, this could have led people to see the robot as having the human-like character.

For thousands of years, humans lived in a world where they were the only ones who could have conversations. Our brains learned to react to social situations in a certain way. But our brains are not used to telling the difference between real people and fake people. The robot expressed feelings and desires and that got people to want to treat the robot as if it were alive.

【1】Why did scientists use Nao in the study?

A.To learn about how people react to robots.

    B.To communicate with humans.

C.To help people finish their daily tasks.

    D.To improve people’s social skills.

【2】What did participants do when asked to turn off Nao?

A.All of them refused to turn it off.

B.Not all of them took action immediately.

C.All of them found it hard to operate it.

D.All of them followed the order soon.

    【3】Compared with TVs, robots________.

    A.are more similar to humans

    B.often depend on humans

    C.have independent thought

    D.know well about different voices

【4】What can we know about our brains?

A.They are much cleverer than robots.

    B.They can recognize fake people.

C.They can ’t tell the difference between real people and fake people.

D.They teach robots to show their feelings.

  • 23、A girls’ soccer team has gone from losing 20-0 each week to winning promotion to the top division—after a dad started coaching.

Golden Hill got routinely thrashed every time they competed in a game. The team now win regularly and secured promotion for next year. That is thanks to Stuart Henley. The 41-year-old car valeter (代客泊车的人), whose 14-year-old daughter plays for the team, took the job two years ago when the previous manager quit because no one else would.

Stuart renamed the team Leek Town Devils and started training hard in February 2020. Many players had never kicked a soccer before joining the team, so training them took hours of hard work and patience. Stuart’s first season was disturbed by the pandemic (疫情), which forced him to get creative with training. He organized team-building activities with the girls to help them bond on and off the field. Stuart then spent the sessions they could hold focusing on the basics of soccer like passing, shooting and movement. Each week the girls were asked to work on the bits that went wrong the previous Saturday and learn from them, which really helped the team improve.

Stuart recalled,“In our first game together, when we scored a goal it was like winning the World Cup. Although we lost the game, we didn’t care because the goal was a sign of progress.”

Stuart watched the girls develop over the course of last year, and in September they played their another match. They won the game, and since then went on an unbeaten run of eight games. Their newfound form led them to a top-of-the-table battle this February, where they were sadly beaten. However, the team still have gone beyond expectation by winning promotion to the county's top division.

Stuart added,“We are about giving girls the chance to play soccer. We’re going into next season full of confidence and ready to compete against tougher competitors, but for now we’re really enjoying our victory.”

【1】What does the underlined word “thrashed” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Defeated.

    B.Challenged.

    C.Trained.

    D.Praised.

【2】What did Stuart Henley ask the team to do for the training?

    A.Learn from the wrong.

    B.Avoid team-building activities.

    C.Abandon previous kicking skills.

    D.Focus on high-level techniques.

【3】What did Stuart Henley think of the team’s performance for their first game?

    A.It meant nothing to him.

    B.It was a complete failure.

C.It hardly lived up to his expectation.

    D.It deserved recognition and cheers.

【4】What does the author intend to stress about the team in paragraph 5?

    A.Its future expectations.

    B.Its amazing achievements.

    C.Its disappointing failures.

    D.Its true competing goals.

  • 24、A study led by Plana-Ripoll, a doctor at Aarhus University in Denmark, tries to deal with a fundamental question that has bothered researchers for more than a century—what exactly causes mental illness?

In the hope of finding the answer, scientists have piled up a large amount of data over the past decade, through studies of genes and brain activity. They have found that many of the same genes underlie seemingly distinct disorders and that changes in the brain's decision-making systems could be involved in many conditions.

The researchers are also rethinking theories of how our brains go wrong. The idea that mental illness can be classified into distinct, separate categories like “anxiety” has been disproved to a large extent. Instead, recently they’ve found that disorders shade into each other, and there are no hard dividing lines.

The researchers are trying to understand the biology that underlies mental illness. They have a few theories. Perhaps there are several dimensions (维度) of mental illness, so depending on how a person scores on each dimension, they might be more likely to have some disorders than others. An alternative idea is that there is a single factor that makes people easier to suffer from mental illness in general. What disorder they develop is then determined by other factors. Both ideas are being taken seriously though the former one is more widely accepted by the researchers.

The details are still unclear, but most researchers agree that one thing is specific: The old system of categorizing mental disorders into neat boxes does not work. They are also hopeful that, in the long run, replacing this framework with one that is grounded in biology will lead to new drugs and treatments. The researchers aim to reveal, for instance, the key genes, brain regions and neurological processes involved in psychopathology (精神病理学), and target them with treatments. Although it might take a while to get there, they are long-term optimistic if the field really does its work.

【1】What aspect of mental illness has been puzzling researchers according to the text?

    A.Its theories.

    B.Its symptoms.

    C.Its categories.

    D.Its roots.

【2】What have the researchers found from the recent study?

A.There exist links between mental disorders.

B.Brain function has little to do with mental illness.

C.Mental illness is classified into different categories.

D.Genes are completely different in distinct mental disorders.

【3】Which one is more widely accepted by the researchers according to paragraph 4?

    A.The theory of genetic influences.

    B.The belief of brain abnormalities.

    C.The concept of multiple dimensions.

D.The idea of the determined risk factor.

【4】What can we learn about mental illness from the text?

A.Its genes are too complex to study.

B.Its new drugs can be available soon.

C.Researchers are clear about its details.

D.Seeking for its physiology might help.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In late December, the cow path near our house in Tennessee was still covered with leaves, but I knew snow would be falling soon enough. My younger brother, Buddy Earl, and I were on an important mission: Go to Uncle Tommie’s place and get a goose(鹅). The hiking over Little Mountain and getting there would be worth it. Uncle Tommie raised the best geese around, and he’d offered to give us one for Christmas dinner.

Uncle Tommie met us at the door. “I’m not rushing you boys,” he said, “but as light snow started, you’d better get the goose and head home.” It didn’t take me long to pick up a goose from his yard. Buddy and I said a quick thank you and goodbye. The snow came down harder, wind blowing every way.

“I’m as cold as ice. How about you?” asked Buddy.

I tapped the goose’s head. “I wish we had feathers to keep us warm like you,” I said. “Or heavier coats.”

“Doug, I’m freezing,” Buddy said. I could hardly hear him over the wind and my own chattering teeth. “I think we should go back.” The idea was attractive, but we were closer to home than to Uncle Tommie’s house. We had to push on.

I held the goose closer to my chest. The bird was the only warm thing about me. I stepped in front of my brother. “Buddy, open your coat!” “Are you crazy?” He asked. “I’ll lose the little warmth I have.” When he saw I was serious, he slowly unzipped (拉开……的拉链) his coat and opened it. I placed the warm goose inside his coat and zipped it back up. “Make sure you keep the goose’s head out so it can breathe.” Buddy sighed happily. My plan was working.

    注意:1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

“Doug, it is time for you to open your coat. ”
