二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In dry Niger, south of the Sahara, farmers who allowed cut trees to regrow in their fields have seen crop harvests increase rapidly. In recent decades, farmers there have allowed millions of trees to regrow on land that had once been cleared.

For centuries, rich woodlands dotted this dusty, sun-baked region south of the Sahara. By the time Ali Neino was a boy in the 1980s, however, just one lonely tree shot from his family’s land, and he could see clear to the horizon. “There was no vegetation in between the village and the fields,” recalls Neino, 45. “No trees, no plants, nothing.”

Decades of drought, land-clearing, and demand for firewood had left Niger nearly treeless. Intensive farming (密集农作) to feed the world’s fastest-growing population ensured new trees would not take root. Government efforts to reforest the area in the 1970s failed. Sixty million trees were planted; fewer than 20 percent survived.

Instead of cutting trees down, farmers in Niger now leave them standing and allow them to regrow from stumps (树桩), knowing that the soil around them will retain more water and be enriched by the leaves. On a recent walk along his family’s farm outside Dan Saga, Neino pointed to the trees growing everywhere.

In the past 35 years, as scientists begged nations to get serious about bringing forests back, one of Earth’s poorest countries, in one of the planet’s worst regions, added an astonishing 200 million new trees—maybe more. Across at least 12 million acres of Niger, woodlands have been re-established with little outside help, almost no money, and without driving people off their land. The trees here weren’t planted; they were encouraged to come back naturally, cared by thousands of farmers. Now, fresh trees are popping up in village after village.

【1】Why is Ali Neino mentioned in Paragraph 2?

A.To stress the importance of trees.

B.To show the features of the Sahara.

C.To prove Niger ‘s shortage of trees.

D.To predict the disappearance of trees.

【2】What made it hard for new trees to grow in Niger?

    A.Years of drought.

    B.Intensive farming.

    C.Trees’ low survival rate.

    D.Government efforts’ failure.

【3】How did Niger manage to rebuild its woodlands?

A.By driving people off their land.

B.By allowing trees to regrow naturally.

C.By encouraging farmers to plant more.

D.By getting support from other countries.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Trees growing again in a dry nation

B.Land cleared for tree-planting in the Sahara

C.Trees planted for the environment worldwide

D.Crop harvests benefiting from trees in Niger

  • 22、British teen Kitty Tait wakes up at 5 am every day to bake bread, but it’s not just any old bread. The young girl who runs the Orange Bakery in her home town, with her dad Alex, adds a little humor to her bakes.

“If something is fun to eat, it makes it even tastier!” the teen baking star, who overcame depression after discovering the art of bread making, said. It was watching her dad make a simple loaf of white bread that changed her life forever. “Something that was so unpromising — a bit like how my brain felt at the time — had turned into something so magical,” she recalls.

Soon, Kitty was baking loaves for her neighbors. And before she knew it, there was a subscription service followed by a pop-up in her neighbor’s garage where she sold almost 100 loaves of bread and doughnuts (甜甜圈) in half an hour. “At that moment, I realized that this was what I wanted to do with my life,” she says.

A few months later, after raising enough money through crowdfunding, the teen rented a small retail space in town and her dad quit his job to become her business partner. They’ve been running the Orange Bakery ever since, selling everything from Marmite and cheese swirls to Danish pastries.

“I’m just really excited about people eating good bread, whether it is made by themselves or bought from a bakery,” says Kitty. “My main mission is to make bread inclusive and joyful because I have found so much joy in it.”

Today, the Taits are part of the global baking community, running baking classes at local schools.

【1】What can we learn about Kitty before her picking up baking?

    A.She worked part-time at a bakery.

    A.Popular.

    B.Graceful.

    C.Updated.

    D.Ordinary.

【3】What can we conclude about Kitty’s father from paragraph 4?

A.He had ever been a good teacher.

B.He bought the Orange Bakery for Kitty.

    C.He made a contribution to Kitty's cause.

D.He had ever done foreign trade in a company.

    【4】What is Kitty’s main focus?

    A.Making baking a fun thing.

    B.Earning as much as possible.

    C.Running joyful baking classes.

D.Thinking up better ways of baking.

  • 23、   The view from the top of Marina Bay Sands, a giant hotel, mall and casino, takes in the skyscrapers of Singapore, the fleets of ships entering and leaving the city's ports, the scattered tropical islands of the Singapore Strait and the crowds of soggy but determined selfie- takers trying to capture a perfect image of it all from the enormous infinity pool. Among the celebrities the hotel has lured (吸引) for a damp snap are Jing Boran and Fu Xinbo, Chinese film and music stars. China Daily, a Chinese state-owned newspaper, has declared the spot the eighth most romantic in the world. The place displays itself all over Chinese social media and offers special discounts and packages to visitors from China.

Such spin is increasingly important. Last year, for the first time, China was the biggest source of tourists to Singapore, accounting for 3. 2m of its 17. 4m visitors. Between January and September alone they spent more than $3bn ($ 2.3bn).

All across South-East Asia tourism is booming. The number of visitors jumped by 49% between 2010 and 2015 to more than 109m. Tourism in Asia and the Pacific is growing faster than anywhere else in the world. The region receives a quarter of the world's holidaymakers (Europe’s share is still a half).

South-East Asia’s Edenic islands, ancient temples and delicious food are strong enticements (诱惑,怂恿). Visitors also flock to countries with cheap currencies: the weakness of the ringgit last year helped draw visitors to Malaysia, for example. Many countries in the region depend on the cash: tourism accounts for about 28% of Cambodia’s GDP and more than 20% of Thailand’s.

The most remarkable growth has been in tourists from China. The number visiting South-East Asia has increased fivefold over the past decade. Newly wealthy Chinese spent almost $ 26lbn travelling abroad in 2016, up from $73bn in 2011.

Indonesia, for one, has relaxed its visa rules to attract more of them. More seats on cheap flights have also helped pull in tourists: between 2013 and 2016 the number available each week on flights to South East Asia from China increased from 92,000 to 188,500.

But for the frenzied holidaying to continue to grow, infrastructure must improve, reckons Paul Yong of DBS, a Singaporean bank. Airports in places such as Manila and Jakarta are crumbling and surrounded by snaking traffic. Plans are afoot to increase annual capacity at Bangkok’s airports by tens of millions over the next four years. Hanoi’s Noi Bai will be expanded at a cost of $5.5bn to accommodate 35m passengers by 2020. Airports in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are to be upgraded too.

Other threats to thriving tourism are far harder to plan around, Travel operators tremble at the thought of economic downturns, volcanic eruptions and epidemic diseases. The head of one luxury holiday company says the regional outbreak of SARS, a respiratory disease, more than 15 years ago almost brought the industry to its knees. Political spats between China and its neighbours are another problem. So too is the manner in which Chinese visitors have been vilified in the region for snaffling prawns at buffets, barging into queues and misbehaving on planes. It makes many of them feel unwanted. But given that just 135m of China's 1. 4bn people have ever travelled abroad, South East Asian countries should prepare to welcome many more Chinese — even when they clog up the infinity pool.

1What can Marina Bay Sands be defined as?

    A.The convenient transportation.

    B.The improvement of local security.

    C.The relatively economical prices.

D.The extreme poorness in that region.

4Which may NOT explain the sharp growth in tourists from China?

A.The rise of Chinese financial capacity.

B.The strong desire to consume in cash.

C.Various preferential treatments in that region.

D.Rich resources of tourism in these countries.

5What is the top priority of these South-East Asian countries?

    A.To upgrade their basic facilities.

    B.To advertise their quality service.

    C.To weaken their cheap currencies.

6What should Chinese visitors pay attention to while traveling in that area?

    B.They should handle political conflicts.

    C.They should prevent epidemic diseases.

    D.They should avoid natural disasters.

  • 24、   Over the past few months huge groups of locusts(蝗虫), one of which occupied an area more than three times the size of New York City, have eaten up crops across the Home of Africa and the Middle East, leaving an estimated 20 million people at risk of famine(饥荒). The first generation's eggs are starting to hatch, and now even bigger swarms(虫群) are forming threatening. Countries from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Yemen, Iran, Pakistan and India, “representing a threat to food security and livelihoods,” says the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO).

Desert locusts' populations explode when weather conditions are right. That explosion can create huge swarms that can travel great distance-more than 90 miles in a day-in search of food. Warm weather and unusually heavy rains in the Horn of Africa at the end of 2019 provided the moist(湿润的) soil necessary for hatching eggs. From there, the insects spread rapidly, resulting in one of the worst outbreaks the region has seen in more than 70 years.

A typical swarm numbering 4 billion to 8 billion locusts, can consume in one day the same  amount of food as 35 million people. Some swarms have been so thick in parts of Kenya that they have prevented planes from taking off. Governments have used widespread aerial spraying of pesticides when available; in poorer regions, where aircraft are unavailable, soldiers battle the swarms with handheld spray pump.

The FAO has appealed for $138 million to support affected communities, If the locusts are not stopped before the next generation hatches, the impact could be terrible: the FAO guesses that an additional 25 million people across the region could lose their crops. Scientists in Kenya hope a new computer-assisted tracking program that combines satellite data with weather-mapping software will help predict the swarms next destination, buying-regional authorities enough time to prepare a response. Buy coronavirus- related travel restriction have delayed relief efforts as well as response mechanisms. The locusts have no such travel limitations.

1The author uses many statistics in the passage to show_____

A.the disastrous consequence of the outbreaks of locusts

B.the serious conditions facing the New York City

C.the speed of swarms of locusts travelling

D.the exact number of crops consumed by locusts

2What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.The great distances locusts can travel.

    B.The explosion of locusts' population.

C.The perfect conditions for hatching their eggs.

D.The result of the unusual outbreaks of locusts.

3What does the last paragraph imply?

A.The travel restrictions may probably worsen the urgent situation.

B.It is unlikely to predict the swarms' next destination now.

C.A lot of money has been raised after the FAO's appeal

D.It's not difficult for humans to win the battle against the locust
