  • 21、Shanghai has the reputation of having most coffee stores in the world. Various coffee stores can be accessed in Shanghai. Recommendations are offered:

Situated alongside Huangpu River with a giant Panda doll sitting on its rooftop, the Xuhui branch store of Manner Coffee has become a WeChat moments-worthy location. Although people will wait a long time before tasting the coffee, the tents on the rooftop and the landscape are worth the effort. Flat white and Panda latte are the most sought-after coffee products.

Take a walk with your eyes open, and you will find a sun porch at the end of a lane off Wukang Road. Bright sunlight is Arabica’s most powerful marketing tool. Visitors keep popping into the coffee shop for its minimalist interior and Spanish latte. Whoever visits this place will be reminded of the saying that good wine needs no bush. “Coffee” is a better substitute here, though.

The O.P.S. Cafe is an open window on Taiyuan Road, offering only takeaway coffee for customers. The menu, though updated seasonally, displays only five products. When customers get their coffee, they also receive a card bearing its brewing process. Verbal introductions can also be expected from coffee makers, stirring a warmer feeling in customers’ heart. The winter specials of O.P.S. include Into the Wild and Fantasy of the Deep Forest.

Ralph’s coffee, an expanded business sector of Ralph Lauren, America’s famous clothing brand, is a popular place at Jing’an Kerry Center.

It’s the third branch store opened following Hong Kong and Beijing. The coffee shop sports its Himalayan salt caramel latte. Apart from its coffee and cake, the brand’s associated products such as fluffy bear dolls, plates, hats are on sale as well. Many people are deeply attracted by its unique interior.

  • 22、Every time we see something new, we wish to document it in some form or another. If your travel stories are written well, the appreciation from known and unknown persons alike are the greatest rewards those travel stories could bring.

【1】 They determine the success or failure of what you have written.

    VOICE

Travel stories need a warm human voice. Don’t try to write like a fact-checker or reporter. You are undertaking a fundamentally human adventure, and your humanity should be one of the fundamental strengths of your story.

Your voice should not only reflect your personality and style but also express your opinion and judgment. 【2】

    PACING

【3】 It can be headlong and breathless or slow and measured. Make sure the pace fits your piece, and you can control it. It’s fine to speed up and slow down — it can make the reading a richer experience.

ATTEND TO THE MUSIC OF THE LANGUAGE

Think of English as a musical instrument. 【4】 Read your writing out loud, and listen to the music of your writing. What kind of mood are you creating? Are you keeping the pace lively or is it wooden?

MAKE YOUR VERBS ACT & YOUR WORDS COUNT

One of the biggest traps for inexperienced writers is the desire to use a lot of adjectives and adverbs. Use active verbs, instead. 【5】 Reread your work slowly, and ask yourself if you really need each word. Remember that less is more.

A.Don’t use three words when you can use one.

B.Inform your voice with opinion when appropriate.

C.What kind of pace do you want your story to have?

D.You are using that instrument to create great music.

E.Don’t tell what your characters are feeling — show it.

F.It is important to write in a way that feels natural to you.

G.When writing a travel story, pay attention to the following elements.

  • 23、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Sunny countries are often poor. A shame, then, that solar power is still quite expensive. Eight19, a British company by Cambridge University, has, however, invented a novel way to get round this. In return for a deposit of around $10 it is supplying poor Kenyan families with a solar cell able to generate 2.5 watts of electricity, a battery that can deliver a three amp(安培) current to store this electricity, and a lamp whose bulb is a light-emitting diode(二极管). The firm thinks that this system, once the battery is fully charged, is enough to light two small rooms and to power a mobile-phone charger for seven hours. Then, next day, it can be put outside and charged back up again.

The trick is that, to be able to use the electricity, the system's keeper must buy a scratch card—for as little as a dollar—on which is printed a reference number. The keeper sends this reference, plus the serial number of the household solar unit, by SMS to Eight19. The company's server will respond automatically with an access code to the unit.

Users may consider that they are paying an hourly rate for their electricity. In fact, they are paying off the cost of the unit. After buying around $80 worth of scratch cards—which Eight19 expects would take the average family around 18 months—the user will own it. He will then have the option of continuing to use it for nothing, or of trading it in for a bigger one, perhaps driven by a 10-watt solar cell.

In that case, he would go then through the same process again, paying off the additional cost of the upgraded kit at a slightly higher rate. Users would therefore increase their electricity supply steadily and afford ably.

According to Eight19's figures, this looks like a good deal for customers.  The firm believes the average energy-starved Kenyan spends around $10 a month on oil—enough to fuel a couple of smoky lamps—plus $2 on charging his mobile phone in the market-place. Regular users of one of Eight19's basic solar units will spend around half that, before owning it completely. Meanwhile, as the cost of solar technology falls, it should get even cheaper.

【3】It can be inferred from the last paragraph that  ____________.

  • 24、   If you wear glasses, chances are you are smarter. Research published in the famous British journal Nature Communications has found that people who displayed higher levels of intelligence were almost 30 percent more likely to wear glasses.

The scientists studied the genes of thousands of people between the ages of 16 and 102.The study showed intelligence can be connected to physical characteristics. One characteristic   was eyesight. In out of 10 people who were more intelligent, there was a higher chance they needed glasses. Scientists also said being smarter has better benefits. It is connected to better health.

It is important to remember these are connections which are not proven causes. Scientists call this correlation. Just because something is connected to something else does not mean one of those things caused the other. And it's worth noting that what constitutes intelligence is subjective and can be difficult, if not impossible, to measure.

Forget genes though. Plenty of proof shows wearing glasses makes people think you are more intelligent, even if you do not need glasses. A number of studies have found people who wear glasses are seen as smarter, hard working and honest. Many lawyers use this idea to help win their cases. Lawyer Harvey Slovis explained this. Glasses soften their appearance, he said. Sometimes there has been a huge amount of proof showing that people he was defending broke the law. He had them wear glasses and they weren't found guilty.

Glasses are also used to show someone is intelligent in movies and on TV. Ideas about people who wear glasses have begun to shift. People who do not need glasses sometimes wear them for fashion only. They want to look worldly or cool. But not everyone is impressed by this idea, though. GQ magazine said people who wear glasses for fashion are trying too hard to look smart and hip(时髦的). However that hasn’t stopped many celebrities from happily wearing glasses even if they do not need them. Justin Bieber is just one high-profile fan of fashion glasses.

1What does the new study show?

    A. People wearing glasses are smarter.

    B. People wearing glasses are healthier.

    C. Wearing glasses can make people cleverer.

    D. Wearing glasses is associated with higher IQ.

2What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A. Shift B. Link

    C. Proof D. Consequence

3Why do some lawyers ask Their clients to wear glasses in court?

    A. Because it can create a moral image.

    B. Because it can mislead the witnesses.

    C. Because it can highlight clients’ qualities.

    D. Because it can prove the clients' innocence.
