二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   This season, the bushfires in Australia have burned more than 12.35 million acres of land. At least 25 people have been killed and 2000 homes destroyed. According to the BBC, this is the most casualties (伤亡) from wildfires in the country since 2009. The University of Sydney estimates that 480 million animals have died in South Wales alone.

Zeke Hausfather, an energy systems analyst and climate researcher at Berkeley Earth, said warmer temperatures and extreme weather have made Australia more susceptible to fires and increased the length of the fire season. “The drier conditions combined with record high temperatures in 2019 created main conditions for the disastrous fires. Australia’s fires were worsened by the combination of those two. 2019 was the perfect storm for being the warmest year on record for Australia and the driest year on record for Australia,” Hausfather added on Friday.

Kevin Trenberth, a senior scientist at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research, said warmer ocean temperatures also contributed to more variable weather around the world. Trenberth believes that global warming contributed to energy imbalances and hot spots in the oceans, which can create a wave in the atmosphere that locks weather patterns in places, causing longer rain events in Indonesia, for example, and at the same time contributing to drought in Australia. He said that once an area experiences drought conditions for two months or more, it increases the risk of fires catching and spreading. Those changing weather patterns due to global warming make drought events longer.

Climate experts stress that climate change is not the only factor in the severity of wildfires. How land is managed can also impact the amount of fuel available for fires. Practices like controlled burns and other factors can impact the risk to people and property, such as warning systems and the type of development in a given area. Changing those policies has great potential to limit future damage from wildfires along with changes to how fire management resources are dispatched (派遣).

1What are the numbers about in Paragraph 1?

A.The causes of Australian fires. B.The results of Australian fires.

C.The damaged areas of Australian fires. D.The property destruction of Australian fires.

2Which of the following best explains “susceptible to” in the second paragraph?

A.Very quickly to adapt to. B.Very seriously to focus on.

C.Very easily to be protected against. D.Very likely to be influenced by.

3What can we infer from Trenberth’s research?

A.Warmer ocean temperatures promote fires spreading.

B.Longer dry weather contributes to global warming.

C.The imbalanced energy leads to the temperature rising.

D.Global warming is the root cause of the bushfires.

4What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?

A.To provide some advice about reducing damage.

B.To show the methods for controlling burns.

C.To predict the seriousness of Australian fires.

D.To stress the effects of Australian fires.

  • 22、Researchers in China and the United States have developed a new cataract(白内障)treatment with cells that has restored vision in babies in a trial and may eventually be used in adults.

The treatment-by doctors and staff members at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Sichuan and Sun Yat-sen universities in China-was published in March 9 edition of the scientific journal Nature.

A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens(晶体)of an eye. Typical cataract operation involves the removal of the cloudy lens and the insertion of an artificial one. The new operation has been tested in animals and during a small, human trial. It resulted in fewer complications(并发症)than the current harmful operation, and in regrown lenses with superior visual function in all 12 of the baby cataract patients who received the procedure.

A congenital cataract-lens clouding that occurs at birth or shortly after- is important cause of blindness in children. In the new research, K and Zhang, head of ophthalmic genetics at US San Diego’s Shiley Eye Institute, and  his colleagues relied on the regrown potential of endogenous(同源的)stem cells.

According to Zhang, endogenous stem cells are different from other stem cells that are typically grown in a laboratory, transplanted into a patient, and can have risks of immune(免疫的)rejection, infection or cancers. Zhang told CBS News, “We invented a new operation to make a very small opening at the side of a cataractous lens bag, remove the cataract inside, allow the opening to heal, and promote potential lens stem cells to regrow an entirely new lens with vision.”

The human trial involved 12 babies under the age of 2 who were treated with the new method, while 25 babies received the standard operation care. The latter group experienced a higher incidence of post-operation danger, early- onset eye high blood pressure and increased lens clouding. The scientists reported fewer complications and faster healing among the 12 babies who has the new procedure.

1What is the text mainly about?

    A. A new cataract treatment with stem cells.

    B. The concept of the cataract.

    C. Bad effects of post-operation in the cataract.

    D. The reasons why the cataract comes into being.

2Which of the following best describe the new cataract treatment according to the passage?

    A. Convenient.   B. Comfortable.

    C. Safe.   D. Cheap.

3What can we learn about the new cataract treatment?

    A. It may be used widely.   B. It has more risks.

    C. It has been put into practice widely.   D. It can only restore vision in babies.

4What does the underlined word “congenital” in the fourth paragraph mean?

    A. Strange.   B. Born.

    C. Serious.   D. Dangerous.

  • 23、Seek out a Unique Beach

    VISIT

Oregon. For sun and fun away from the crowed beaches of Florida, check out the Oregon coast and its 363 miles of gorgeous shoreline, stretching from the Columbia River south to the redwood forests of California. Every beach is public and free. “The coast is a perfect place to watch sea lions sun themselves or simply see the mighty Pacific weaves crash in the sunset followed by a seafood feast in one of the busy fishing communities located between the coves(小海湾),” says Bramblett. July and August aren’t peak gray whale migration season, but there’s still a good chance you could catch a glimpse of some of the 200 whales that spend the summers off the Oregon coast.

    SLEEP

Next to a lighthouse. Imagine yourself an ancient mariner when you book a room overlooking the Pacific Ocean at the Heceta Head Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast in Yachats, Oregon. The working lighthouse, which dated to 1894, cast a bright beam 21 miles out to sea, making it the brightest light on the Oregon coast. The cliff-top rooms at the Light Keeper’s home nearby aren’t cheap-you’ll sell out up to $385 for a weekend night during peak season (price includes a seven-course breakfast).

    BEWARE

Dangerous currents Unless you love cold water (or wear a wet suit), you may not wait to venture into the sea off the Oregon coast, even during the summer. But if you do, be prepared for the U.S. Lifesaving Association. Swim parallel to the beach until you’re no longer being pulled out to sea, then swim diagonally(成对角线地)toward the shore.

    BRING

Baby powder. Use a generous amount of baby powder to remove sand from your hands, feet or hair. The powder quickly absorbs moisture, allowing sand to fall off easily.

1It can be inferred from the section SLEEP that______.

A.the price of one night shay remains the same all the year around

B.those who stay there can have a free access to the beach and the lighthouse

C.those who want to stay there have to pay more during a tourist season

D.the price includes the breakfast for seven people

2What is suggested by the leaflet if you want to enjoy your stay at the beach?

    A.Avoid wearing wet suits

B.Never dive into the cold water off the coast

C.Bring baby powder to protect your skin from sand scratches

D.Don’t swim straight toward the shore when there’re dangerous currents

3Oregon coast will provide you with all the following experiences EXCEPT______.

A.a perfect view of sea lions

B.a mariner like stay in the more than 100-year-old lighthouse

C.a seafood feast in the popular local community

D.sun and fun of the less crowed beach

  • 24、Wild animals seem to have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami, adding weight to ideas that they possess a “sixth sense” for disasters, experts said on Thursday.

Sri Lanka wildlife officials have said the giant waves that killed over 24,000 people along the Indian Ocean island’s coast seemingly missed wild beasts, with no dead animals found.

“No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit. I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening.” H.D. Ratnayake, deputy director of Sri Lankan’s Wildlife Department, said on Wednesday.

The waves washed floodwaters up to 3 km (2 miles) inland at Yale National Park in the southeast, Sri Lankan’s biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants. “There has been a lot of evidence about dogs barking or birds migrating before volcanic eruptions or earthquakes. But it has not been proven,” said Matthew van Leroy, an animal behavior specialist at Johannesburg Zoo.

“There have been no specific studies because you can’t really test it in a lab or field setting.” he said.

Other authorities agreed with this conclusion.

“Wildlife seems to be able to pick up certain phenomenon, especially birds. There are many reports of birds detecting coming disasters.” said Clive Walker, who has written several books on African wildlife.

Animals certainly rely on the known senses such as smell or hearing to avoid danger such as predators (食肉动物).

The idea of an animal “sixth sense” is a lasting one that the evidence on Sri Lankan’s damaged coast is likely to add to.

    【1】This passage is mainly about________.

A.why animals can save them from natural disasters

B.the different opinions about animals natural power

C.how to protect the wildlife when disaster happens

D.the damage that was caused in the Indian Ocean tsunami

B.It’s generally considered that animals can sense the coming of disasters.

C.Research has been made on the special movements of animals before disasters.

D.Animals have depended on the known senses to escape the Indian Ocean tsunami.

【3】What does the term “sixth sense” in the text means?

A.It is the animal’s imagination in the brain.

B.It is a kind of sense that is the same as smell or hearing.

C.It is the natural ability of animals that can save them from danger.

D.It is some hidden power to say in advance that something will happen.

【4】Which section does the text most probably appear in a newspaper?

    A.News Report.

    B.Culture.

    C.Science Fiction.

    D.Discovery.
