二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   “Can’t stop loving you ...” My 3-year-old son was singing along with Phil Collins from his car seat. But I was not in the mood to sing along. My manager at the biotech company where I had been working for a bit more than a year had just told me that, in spite of my excellent performance, he did not foresee giving me more responsibilities in the near future. I was working part time so that I could spend more time with my young children, and he believed the career growth I sought required a full-time employee. The message hit me hard. But it brought on a change that, in the end, taught me the power of embracing opportunities, no matter where they come from.

My manager’s decision planted a seed of self-doubt. Was he right? Was I asking for too much? But I reminded myself that I had already proved I could be an effective scientist on a part-time schedule. A friend suggested that I reach out to senior managers about opportunities in other departments. At first, I resolutely rejected that idea. Didn’t he understand? I wanted to work on antibodies and nothing but antibodies! That was what I knew, where I felt I could add the most value. And yet, I did not want to leave this cool company just because of one unsupportive manager.

With little expectation that it would lead anywhere, I approached the three senior managers. One did not respond. One had nothing to offer. The third invited me to chat. He patiently listened to my story, asked what I was looking for, and thenin the blink of an eyetold me that I was welcome to join him in building a vaeeine research unit. I told him I knew nothing about vaccines, but he waved nonchalantly (不以为意地) and said, “You will learn. You are smart and willing to work hard. You will make it.”

This comfort was exactly what I had been looking for, but I was still shaken by my manager’s lack of confidence in me. Could I really handle a high-responsibility role in a completely new field?

A few sleepless nights later, I decided that taking a chance on the unknown was better than staying in a position that made me miserable. The worst thing thal could happen was that I would fail. But I already felt like a failure, so why not try it?

I soon discovered a new passion. My career path within the company opened up. I took on more responsibilities, developed new skills, expanded my scientific horizons, worked with great people, and led fantastic projectsall because of a change that had felt foreed on me. It had pushed me further than I was willing to go, further than I thought I could cope with, and taught me that when I step out of my comfort zone, I find my most creative, productive self.

  • 22、There are some sounds most of us acknowledge are annoying: the chewing of chips, the low noise of air conditioning or a screaming baby. These noises, for many people, act as a mere inconvenience that can distract them from the task at hand. However, there are some amongst us who have a much more severe response to these noises. Has a noise ever made you feel so angry that you could explode with rage? If the answer is yes, you may be suffering from misophonia (恐音症).

The word “misophonia” literally means “a hatred of sound” and is sometimes called Selective Sound Sensitivity Syndrome. There are some experts who doubt the existence of the condition. However, for those who claim to suffer from it, the experience can be painful. Certain sounds could set off intense emotional or psychological responses that may seem over the top compared with a non-sufferer’s complaints.

The sound of people chewing their food could trigger sufferers’ anxiety, or make them feel panic. It may even activate their fight-or-flight response, making them want to run away. In extreme cases, that feeling of panic may result in intense anger and even end up expressing rage physically.

Sadly, there’s no known cure. But tinnitus retraining therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and counselling could help sufferers tolerate noises and manage the condition. According to James Cartreine, a clinical psychiatrist, the condition can lead to separation. Sufferers use coping strategies that include avoiding places with lots of noises, like restaurants, or moving away when they feel like raging against someone due to their breathing.

So, the next time you see someone fly into a rage because of a sound that is driving them crazy, it may be due to a difficult condition they are trying to manage, and not just because they hate a certain sound.

【1】What is the purpose of paragraph 1?

A.To lead in the topic of misophonia.

    B.To introduce different annoying sounds.

C.To show ways of preventing a severe disease.

D.To present the harm of noises to human health.

【2】Who is most likely to suffer from misophonia?

A.Jane who usually has lunch alone.

B.Nancy who often screams at her baby.

C.Peter who is always worried about his studies.

D.Henry who is annoyed at the sound of book pages turning.

【3】What can be inferred about misophonia from the last but one paragraph?

    A.It happens mostly in restaurants.

B.Any sound around can drive sufferers crazy.

C.Staying away from noises is a potential solution.

D.It may greatly influence sufferers’ cognitive ability.

  • 23、In cities with rent control, the city government sets the maximum rent that a landlord (房东) can charge for an apartment. Supporters of rent control argue that it protects people who are living in apartment. Their rent cannot increase; therefore, they are not in danger of losing their homes. However, the critics say that after a long time, rent control may have negative effects. Landlords know that they cannot increase their profits. Therefore, they invest in other businesses where they can increase their profits. They do not invest in new buildings which would also be rent-controlled. As a result, new apartments are not built. Many people who need apartments cannot find any. According to the critics, the end result of rent control is a shortage of apartments in the city.

Some experts argue that the minimum wage law can cause problems in the same way. The federal government sets the minimum that an employer must pay workers. The minimum helps people who generally look for unskilled, low-paying jobs. However, if the minimum is high, employers may hire fewer workers. They will replace workers with machinery. Therefore, other things being equal, the number of workers that employers want decreases. Thus, critics hold the opinion that an increase in the minimum wage may cause unemployment. Some poor people may find themselves without jobs instead of with jobs at the minimum wage.

Supporters of the minimum wage say that it helps people keep their dignity. Because of the law, workers cannot sell their services for less than the minimum. Furthermore, employers cannot force workers to accept jobs at unfair wages.

Economic theory predicts the results of economic decision, such as decisions about farm production, rent control, and the minimum wage. The predictions may be corrected only if “other things are equal”. Economists do not agree on some of the predictions. They also do not agree on the value of different decisions. Some economists support a particular decision while others criticize it. Economists do agree, however, that there are no simple answers to economic questions.

【1】There is the possibility that setting maximum rent may ________.

    A. cause a shortage of apartments

    B. worry those who rent apartments as homes

    C. increase the profits of landlords

    D. encourage landlords to invest in building apartments

【2】We can safely say that rent control ________.

    A. will always benefit those who rent apartments

    B. is unnecessary

    C. will probably bring inactive effects in the long run

    D. is necessary under all conditions

【3】There will be the problem of unemployment if ________.

    A. the minimum wage is set too high

    B. the minimum wage is set too early

    C. the workers are unskilled

    D. the maximum wage is set for poor workers

【4】The passage tells us about ________.

    A. the relationship between supply and demand

    B. the possible results of government controls

    C. the necessity of government control

    D. the urgency of getting rid of government control

  • 24、The Meaning and Power of Smell

Research into smell has never ended and in fact, there are so many interesting findings with regard to this sensation. Everyone knows that smell can cause strong emotional responses. In a survey, people were asked to report how they feel about a particular smell. Commonly, a smell connected with a good experience can please us, while an odour (气味) bonded with a bad memory may disgust us. 【1】 Such associations can be so powerful that odours generally labeled unpleasant become agreeable, and those generally considered sweet become disagreeable for particular individuals.

【2】 One respondent believes there is no true emotional bonding without smelling a loved one. Infants recognize their mothers’ odours soon after birth. Individuals were able to distinguish by the smell of clothing worn by their partners from similar clothing worn by other people.

Despite its importance to our emotional and sensory lives, smell is probably the most undervalued sense. While our olfactory (嗅觉的) powers are not as fine as those of certain animals, they are remarkably sensitive. 【3】

Odours, unlike colours, can’t be named in many languages because the specific vocabulary simply doesn’t exist. “It smells like..., we have to say when describing an odour, struggling to express our olfactory experience. 【4】

【5】 Smells considered offensive in some cultures may be acceptable in others. Therefore, our sense of smell is a means of interacting with the world. The study of the cultural history of smell is indeed an investigation into the essence of human culture.

A.Odours are also essential signals in social bonding.

B.Besides, odours are granted different cultural values.

C.Human’s perception of smell facilitates the spread of human culture.

D.Our noses can perceive odours present in extremely small quantities.

E.Nor can odours be recorded: there is no effective way to capture or store them over time.

F.Some people’s preference for a particular odour was influenced by their emotional wellbeing.

G.Yet, many people noted that their olfactory (嗅觉的) preferences were based on emotional associations.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Lily was renowned for her desire to achieve perfection in everything she undertook. Whether it was school projects, art assignments, or even helping her parents with household chores, Lily’s commitment to excellence was unwavering.

One sunny summer day, Lily’s family decided to spend a day at the beach. As they arrived, Lily’s eyes were immediately drawn by a group of children who playfully built and then tore down their sandcastles. They giggled and shouted, their excitement on full display. “How silly, ” she thought, not quite getting why they enjoyed doing that.

Lily, being herself, decided to build a perfect sandcastle that would become the envy of all beachgoers. She began to plan every detail in her mind, from the balanced structures of the towers to the delicate decorations. Then, she set about piling sand to make the towers and walls of her sandcastle. Painstakingly, she crafted each feature of her work, carefully smoothed the surfaces and adjusting every detail to her vision.

Jake, Lily’s younger brother, didn’t seem too concerned with building a fantastic sandcastle. He picked a spot nearby and amused himself with the sand. He scooped up handfuls of sand, let it slip through his fingers like grains of time, and then molded it into careless shapes with the carefree abandon of a child. Jake’s happiness was contagious. Mom and Dad joined him, laughing and joking over Jake’s playful creations. From time to time, they called out to Lily and invited her to join the fun, knowing that the pursuit of perfection could be exhausting.

Nevertheless, Lily stayed where she was, determined to create an impressive sandcastle. She frowned at Jake’s unconventional, abstract art-like sandcastle shapes and persisted in her efforts. However, the process didn’t go as smoothly as she had anticipated. The sand didn’t always hold its shape, and the waves constantly lapped at the edges of her creation.

Para 1: As the day wore on, Lily’s sandcastle kept losing its form.
