Judy is reading a book which describes 37 endangered natural and cultural treasures in the world. The writer wants the book to be hopeful call to action. Let’s visit some of these places.

    Venice

The city of Venice, Italy, has been in danger because of rising sea levels. The situation is worse because of its ancient buildings that were built on a body of water and are slowly sinking (下沉). When the city was built 1,600 years ago, the level of the Adriatic Sea was almost 2 meters lower than it is today.

    Mount Kilimanjaro

The mountain is the highest point in Africa, almost 6,000 meters high. It supports 5 plant areas and many kinds of animals.

The ice glaciers (冰川) on it are disappearing very quickly. This is bad for the local natural environ ment and its tourist industry. Also, a valuable record of thousands of years of weather history will also be lost if the ice melts (融化).

    Glacier National Park

In the US, the icy blocks in the park may soon completely disappear because of weather change. In 1850, there were about 150 glaciers, but only 26 are remaining today.

Scientists predict that all the glaciers will be gone by 2030. Warm temperatures are also threat ening (威胁) many kinds of plants and animals that live in the park.

    Great Barrier Reef

It’s the largest coral reef (珊瑚礁) in the world. Rising sea temperatures are greatly harming the reef. In some areas, healthy yellow, brown and green reefs have become white. The coral becomes white in warmer tem perature. Sick or dying coral affects the natural environment of this special underwater area. Water pollution and visits from careless swimmers and divers also threaten the reef.

1The following treasure is important to the local natural environment EXCEPT_______.

A.the city of Venice B.Mount Kilimanjaro

C.Glacier National Park D.Great Barrier Reef

2Why is Mount Kilimanjaro so important?

Because it is almost 6000 meters high.

Because it supports 5 plant areas and many animals.

Because it has a bad effect on nature and local travel.

Because it has a valuable record of long weather history.

    A.①④ B.③④ C.②③ D.②④

3Glacier National Park and Great Barrier Reef are in danger mainly because of ________.

    A.rising sea levels B.melting ice

    C.warm temperatures D.water pollution

4What should we do to protect all the four treasures according to the text?

A.Stop people visiting the places. B.Try to stop the earth getting warmer.

C.Protect all plants and wild animals. D.Stay away from all kinds of pollution.

    5The book is probably called“_______”.

    A.Interesting Places B.Disappearing Treasures

C.Ecosystem of the World D.Fun Places around the World

  • 26、   He Jiang, a postgraduate(研究生) in biology, will become the first Chinese student to give a speech in the commencement(毕业典礼) at Harvard University on May 26.

Given the highest honor by the university, He Jiang, who was born in a small village in Hunan Province, said, "People in China often believe that it's useless to study and children from the countryside cannot be successful in the future. However, I cannot agree with them. Education can change a person's life. I hope my experience can encourage the students from the countryside to spare no effort in study and make their dreams come true."

Different from many other families in the village, his parents never thought about finding a job in big cities and leaving their two sons at home without their care. His father was strict about their studies. He and his younger brother studied at home while the other kids in the village played in the fields. Unlike his strict father, his mother took her sons' side when her husband scolded the boys. She preferred to sit with her sons when they studied rather than chat with other women in the village.

Getting the chance to speak at the commencement is no accident. During his first days in Harvard, it was quite difficult for him to follow the professors in class and he was speechless in campus because of his poor English. Instead of giving up, He Jiang spent all his free time on English. He also made friends with natives to improve his spoken English. One year later, he had little difficulty in class and soon became one of the top students in his class. With the encouragement from Professor Diana Eck, He Jiang decided to apply(申请) for the chance to speak at the commencement." Few Chinese students had applied before, but I wanted to have a try. I just want to realize my idea of letting more people hear the voice from China and telling them that China is not what it used to be." said He Jiang. After beating three students from Harvard Kennedy School in the third and final round, He Jiang made it to get the chance to speak at the commencement.

He Jiang will go to Massachusetts Institute of Technology after graduating from Harvard.

1Where will He Jiang give the speech?

    A.Harvard University. B.Hunan Province.

C.Harvard Kennedy School. D.Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

2The underlined part "spare no effort in study" means "______".

A.get ready for study B.try their best in study C.enjoy themselves in study D.be interested in study

3Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.He Jiang is the only child in the family.

B.Both of He Jiang's parents were very strict with him.

C.He Jiang's parents never tried to find a job in a big city.

D.He Jiang often played in the fields with other kids in the village.

    4Paragraph 4 mainly tells us ______.

A.how He Jiang got the chance B.how hardworking He Jiang was

C.why He Jiang applied for the chance D.what He Jiang studied in Harvard

5From the passage, we can know that ______.

A.like father, like son B.the early birds get worms

  • 27、   Monkeys seem to have a way with numbers.

A team of researchers trained three Rhesus monkeys to associate 26 clearly different symbols made up of numbers and selective letters with 0-25 drops of water or juice as a reward. The researchers then tested how the monkeys combined—or added—the symbols to get the reward.

Here's how Harvard Medical School scientist Margaret Livingstone, who led the team, described the experiment: In their cages the monkeys were provided with touch screens. On one part of the screen, a symbol would appear, and on the other side two symbols inside a circle were shown. For example, the number 7 would flash on one side of the screen and the other end would have 9 and 8. If the monkeys touched the left side of the screen they would be rewarded with seven drops of water or juice; if they went for the circle, they would be rewarded with the sum of the numbers—17 in this example.

After running hundreds of tests, the researchers noted that the monkeys would go for the higher values more than half the time, showing that they were performing a calculation(计算), not just remembering the value of each combination.

When the team studied the results of the experiment more closely, they noticed that the monkeys tended to underestimate(低估)a sum compared with a single symbol when the two were close in value—sometimes choosing, for example, a 13 over the sum of 8 and 6. The underestimation was systematic: When adding two numbers, the monkeys always paid attention to the larger of the two, and then added only a fraction(小部分)of the smaller number to it.

"This shows that there is a certain way number is represented in their brains, "Dr. Livingstone says. “But in this experiment what they're doing is paying more attention to the big number than the little one.”

1What did the researchers do to the monkeys before testing them?

A.They fed them. B.They named them.

C.They trained them. D.They washed them.

2How did the monkeys get their reward in the experiment?

    A.By drawing a circle. B.By touching a screen.

C.By watching videos. D.By mixing two drinks.

3What did Livingstone's team find about the monkeys?

A.They could perform basic addition. B.They could understand simple words.

C.They could remember numbers easily. D.They could hold their attention for long.

4In which part of a newspaper may this text appear?

    A.Science. B.Health. C.Education. D.Entertainment.
