四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   A cloned black-footed ferret(雪貂), Elizabeth Ann, born on Dec.10, 2020, has become the first successful clone of an endangered animal in the US and has turned a new page in animal protection.

Black-footed ferrets are one of the most endangered animals in North America, with fewer than 500 in the wild. But in the early 1900s, they were widespread throughout the American West. Later, the ferrets disappeared with their primary food source, prairie dogs(土拨鼠) dying out.

Fortunately, thanks to the cloning technology, Elizabeth Ann came to the earth. She was cloned from Willa, a ferret who died in 1988. Willa’s genes(基因) were saved for years since the cloning technology was not perfect enough at that time. “The theory of genes showed the genetic value that Willa could bring to her babies.” Ryan Phelan, who was working in the project, told CNN. “But it was a promise to see this type of ferret pass on that has led to the successful birth of Elizabeth Ann. If Elizabeth Ann can reproduce later on, the number of the ferrets may grow, which helps them stand stronger against natural risks, CBS news reported. However, the effects of cloning remain unclear, according to CNN.

Elizabeth Ann will not be put into the wild and will stay in the lab where she was born so researchers can study her, according to BBC. The team is now working on producing more “Elizabeth Anns”  in the coming months. Besides that, researchers also point out the importance of protection for ferrets’ living places.

【1】What can we know about the black-footed ferrets from the text?

A.They lead a happy life in the wild.

B.They have no chance to pass on.

C.They are in danger of dying out.

    D.They can protect themselves well.

    A.the harm of hunting

    B.the shortage of food

    C.the change of genes

    D.the pollution of water

【3】According to the text, the scientists protect the black-footed ferrets through ________.

    A.providing enough food

    B.changing living places

    C.keeping them in the lab

    D.using the cloning technology

【4】Which picture may show the change of the ferrets if cloning technology works well?

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

【5】What would be the best title of the text?

    B.Ways of Protecting Animals

    C.Cloning for Animal Protection

    D.Research for Wild Animals

  • 25、   I live in Mentone, a quiet, simple, peaceful place, where the rich never come. I met Theophile Magnan, a retired, rich, old man from Lyons yesterday, in the Hotel des Anglais. Theophile looked sad and dreamy, and didn’t talk with anybody else, which brought me back to the past.

A long time ago, Francois Millet, Claude, Carl and I were young artists—very young artists—in fact.

Yes, Francois Millet, the great French artist, was my friend.

Millet wasn’t any greater than we were at that time. He wasn’t known, even in his own village.

We were all poor though we had stocks(存货) and stocks of as good pictures as anybody in Europe painted. Once a person ever offered four francs (法郎) for Millet’s “Angelus”, which he meant to sell for eight.

It was a fact in human history that a great artist would never be accepted until after he was starved and dead. His pictures climbed to high prices after his death.

Then we made a decision that one of us must die, to save the others and himself.

Millet was chosen, chosen to die.

During the next three months Millet painted with all his power, enlarged his stock all he could, not pictures, no! sketches, studies, parts of studies, fragments of studies, of course, with his cipher(暗号) on them.

They were the things to be sold.

Carl went to Paris to start the work of building up Millet’s name. Claude and I went to sell Millet’s small pictures and to build up his name as well.

We made Millet a master. I always said to my customer, “I am a fool to sell a picture of Francois Millet’s at all, for he is not going to live three months, and when he dies, his pictures can’t be had for love or money.”

Claude and I took care to spread that little fact as far as we could.

Carl made friends with the reporters, and got Millet’s condition reported to England and all over the Europe, and America, and everywhere.

The sad end came at last, Millet died, not really. He became Theophile Magnan.

The pictures went up. There’s a man in Paris today who owns seventy Millet pictures. He paid us two million francs for them. Do you still remember the “Angelus”? Carl sold it for twenty-two hundred francs.

We are no longer artists and Millet dead.

1Why did the four friends decide to choose one of them to die?

A.They wanted to be rich. B.They wanted to be famous.

C.They wanted to save money. D.They wanted to be respected.

2Which of these is a fact based on the passage?

A.The story was written in memory of Millet.

B.Millet was still alive but had a new name.

C.Millet lived a wealthy life at first.

D.Millet failed to make a famous artist.

3What made the four friends’ plan succeed?

A.That they didn’t want to be artists any longer.

B.That Millet’s pictures were sold at very high prices.

C.That people had pity on these poor artists.

D.People’s wish to own valuable art works at low prices.

  • 26、   Have you ever forgotten where your socks are when you wake up in the morning? Can you remember what you ate for lunch a week ago? You may think that being forgetful is not a good thing. But now you should be thankful.

Scientists from University of Toronto found that forgetting actually is a key part of learning. Getting rid of (除去) unnecessary information can help our brains work better.

What kind of information is unnecessary? Scientists say that this may have something to do with the environment you live in.

In an environment that is always changing, our brains may require us to remember less. For example, a supermarket cashier (收银员) meets many people every day and will probably only remember them for a short time. But a designer (设计师) who often meets his or her clients (客户) will remember longer.

“That’s because our brains keep making new neurons (神经元) from stem cells (干细胞). ”said Paul Frankland, a professor at the University of Toronto.

There is a special area in our brains called hippocampus (海马体). It is important for us to learn and remember. When new neurons fit in the hippocampus, they renew our old memories. This could explain why you forget so much information about the time when you were very young.

However, being forgetful is not always good. When you don’t have enough sleep, you may have a hard time remembering new information. Sleep helps the brain store and keep new facts and information. Matthew Walker from the University of California told the Huffington Post.
