  • 24、   I always think my daughter Kendall is the bestthat's just what parents do. When she was only three, she sang for the people, like a little angel.

When Kendall was five, we noticed that she sometimes had a tic(面部抽搐). When the problem got worse, we took her from doctor to doctor. During the treatment, Kendall continued to sing. Surprisingly, her tics disappeared when she sang.

When Kendall was sixteen, we thought she would be cured soon. However, a terrible thing happened.

At a party, Kendall jumped on a friend for a piggyback ride. He bent lower than she expected, and she jumped higher than he expected. Kendall flew over his back and landed on the flooron her neck. She was rushed to hospital, paralyzed(瘫痪)from the neck down. She couldn't move. But her biggest worry wasn't whether she would walk again, but was whether she could try out for a show called American Idol(美国偶像).

As the days went on, feeling on her left side returned, but she was still paralyzed on the right. We weren't sure how much of her movement would come back. A friend brought a microphone(麦克风)and put it on her bed. Every day, Kendall tried hard to pick it up. It was more important for her to pick up that microphone than a spoon or fork.

Sometimes she had to bite(咬)a toothbrush to take her mind off the pain. We all cried because of the pain we witnessed(目击). But on the day, only three months after her accident, we cried full of joy when she sang, though she didn't enter the Top 24 of American Idol.

  • 25、Lin Xiao, 21, a student at Guangdong University, has a big family her two parents, a younger brother and two younger sisters. Lin took her role as the “big sister” seriously. When her first sister was born, Lin took turns with her mom holding the baby late into the night. “I almost did everything that was supposed to be a parent’s job, but I felt proud of myself,” she said.

Not all of Lin’s classmates shared her experiences because of the family planning policy (政策), a law that was carried out in China about forty years ago. But the situation is about to change. A new policy made on October 29 said all couples can now have two children.

The new policy is expected to help raise the population of China. Recently, China has been facing an aging population and labor shortages because of the low birth rate (比率).

The two-child policy may also be the gift for every only child. Researchers found that growing up with a brother or sister can have good influence on one’s mental health.

“Brothers and sisters do matter in unique ways. They give kids something that parents don’t.” Laura Walker, a professor from Beijing University, told China Daily. She noted that having a brother or a sister protects teenagers against loneliness, fear and so on.

Liu Fang, 20, from Shenzhen University, has a 2-year-younger sister. When her sister disagreed with parents over choosing a college major, she helped her to communicate with parents. “If necessary, I would always have her back,” said Liu. “The best part of having a sister is that you have a partner, friend and supporter throughout your life.”

But children with brothers or sisters also have to learn to understand and look after each other, said Laura.

【1】There are ________ children in Lin Xiao’s family.

    A. three B. four C. five D. six

【2】The one-child policy caused some problems except ________.

    A. Lin Xiao doesn’t like her sister

    B. Liu Fang has a 17-year-old sister

    C. Laura is against the two-child policy

    D. The one-child policy is out of date now

【4】The best title for this article should be ________.

    A. Brothers and sisters are good for us.

    B. The family planning policy is bad.

    C. The two-child policy helps a lot.

    D. A new policy was made.

  • 27、   As the global pandemic (大流行病) speeds up, many are wondering about the effectiveness of masks and when it's necessary to wear them. Most people from the East believe that wearing a mask is essential to control the spread of the novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP). But people in the West generally would argue that, unless one is already ill, wearing a mask is simply unnecessary.

In Eastern countries like China, mask-wearing is ingrained in their cultures. In fact, people in the East wear masks not just to protect themselves from illness but also for a variety of other reasons.

In many Asian countries, masks are worn in many scenarios (情景) in daily life, such as doing housework or visiting patients in the hospital. They can give people the comfort of being protected. In recent years, they are worn simply for cosmetic reasons. Young people in Japan, for example, wear masks as a fashion statement, expressing their personal style through unique designs and patterns.

In Asia, wearing a face mask, deeply rooted in the culture, is also an outward expression of group-oriented values. With one's face partially covered, one becomes part of a giant collectivist (集体主义的) whole. "People communicated their responsibilities to the social group of which they were members," wrote Peter Baehr, a research professor in social theory at Lingnan University, Hong Kong. "By disguising an individual's face, it gave greater salience (突显) to collective identity. Just like we need to wear uniforms when we are at work or at school."

In Western countries, however, individual values are the most important. As a citizen, it is one's duty to prevent the spread of illness by following proper hygienic procedures, such as washing one's hands and limiting one's contact with others. However, a face mask is taken as something only for those showing symptoms (症状) of illness.

Whether from the East or the West, social culture and peer pressure have played an important role in one's decision about whether or not to wear a mask. That's because human beings are social creatures who take into consideration what other members of society think of us. The most important thing is to respect others' opinions, no matter how different they are.
