24、 For four years, Christopher Schacht lived a life on the go. He traveled 65,000 miles to 45 different countries. Around the world 50 Bucks( 元 )tells of Schacht’s great journey, from his town in northern Germany to some of the most faraway places in the world and back again. Thanks to a translation by Jane Gesme, this international bestseller in English is on sale now.
Reading Schacht’s book is like ping-ponging between worrying about your daredevil (胆大妄为的) son and being proud of your older brother. At parts, I was really frightened for his safety. In order to eat. he worked any job he could find -sailor. waiter, gold miner, model. He mostly slept in hammocks (吊床) on the street or else in his tent. He hitchhiked(搭车) everywhere, even across oceans as he found jobs on sailing boats in return for food and a bed.
However, Schacht’s book does not doubt people. He believes that many people in the world are kind, helpful and curious. This friendliness probably saved his life many times.
Though not perfect for everyone. Schacht’s ways of traveling force him to look for help from others. He meets a Canadian living on a boat in Colombia, who used to be an excellent cook. Schacht needs to learn how to cook in order to get a job on a ship to Panama. In these high-stress moments, Schacht only has a little time to find a way to his next destination ( 目 的 地 ). The relationships he makes along the way are life-changing. As he learns. “In most situations it is quite easy to help someone move forward when they would not have done it alone.”
From sailing across the equator (赤道) to speaking bad Korean in Gyeongju Schacht takes us around the world in surprising detail. Like Schacht, we are also thankful for the journey. We feel even more pleased that Schacht chose to share it with the world.

26、Self- reflection (反省) means stopping the mad rush of activity and keeping yourself and your mind cool, so your brain can evaluate (评价) the input that it has already received. Some people prefer to do their self-reflection in the way of thinking, while others do it in the way of writing something, like keeping a diary or writing notes of some kind.
School textbooks are often divided into units of study. This can make self-reflection easier for someone who wants to do it. Self-reflection can be done in any of the subjects you are learning: math, art or others. Sometimes you are reminded that the unit is over because there is some kind of test. Using those natural breaks above as chances to reflect is a good way.
As a student, you can do self-reflection at school. First, you can write down some notes on things that you learned in this unit that you did not know before you began. Let your mind think over the notes and make some connections with what you have learned. Next, think about the things that you still wonder about. For example, you learned a new way to solve a math problem, but you are not sure when to use it. Writing down your questions will help you remember to seek answers when you meet the same topic again.
Self-reflection is an important skill for a successful student. If you have never taken the time to reflect, try it now.

27、 Breakfast is food for the brain. And it’s good even for people worrying about their weight. Middle school students who eat breakfast are more likely to have healthy weight than those who don’t eat breakfast. This is true even for students who eat two breakfasts — one at home and one at school. “Not skipping(跳过) breakfast helps you not overeat later in the day,” says Marlene Schwartz.
One study has found many kids end up eating two breakfasts. People become worried that kids who eat breakfast both at home and at school might become overweight. In fact, Schwartz now says that’s not what her data(数据) have turned up.
Her group studied 600 middle school students. Over three years, students from 12 different schools were asked about their breakfast. About 34 to 44 percent of all students said they usually ate breakfast at home. Almost one in every six kids usually ate breakfast at school. About one in every 10 kids ate breakfast both at home and at school. Eating habits changed as the kids got older. For example, fifth graders were more likely to eat breakfast. But 22 percent of the seventh graders often didn’t eat breakfast. Surprisingly, at every age, kids who ate breakfast were less likely to be overweight. This was true even for those who ate breakfast at home and at school.
The study found no evidence(证据) of greater weight gain among students who ate double breakfasts.
Why should eating two breakfasts not lead to weight gain? The researchers don’t know yet. But one explanation may be that school breakfast is very healthy and controlled in size. So eating that along with the home breakfast may not be bad for most active and growing middle school students.
【1】According to Paragraph 1, why do some people NOT want to eat breakfast?
A.Because they are worried about putting on weight.
B.Because they don’t consider it to be important.
C.Because they are tired of eating breakfast at school.
D.Because they don’t have time to eat breakfast.
【2】Among 600 students that were studied, we can find that ___________.
A.most kids ate breakfast at school B.the kids eating breakfast twice were getting fat
C.more than half of the students didn’t eat breakfast D.seventh graders skipped breakfast more often than fifth graders
【3】What does Schwartz think about eating two breakfasts?
A.All the girls should stop doing it. B.It can be good for most teenagers.
C.We should try our best to eat a second breakfast. D.Eating two breakfasts is just right for the boys.
【4】What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Eating breakfast twice will make people put on weight.
B.Giving up breakfast is more likely to help lose weight.
C.Having two breakfasts has little to do with being overweight.
D.Having breakfast at home can make kids stay healthy and thin.
