  • 28、   Extreme sports are any sport that involves great speed, height and danger. You need to be very fit to take part in these sports. It can be quite expensive because a lot of special equipment is needed. This type of sport is not usually a team sport like football or rugby. It is what is known as an individual sport because you are alone most of the time.

BASE JUMPING: This is the sport of using a parachute(降落伞) to jump from fixed objects like skyscrapers, high towers, bridges, domes, statues and steep, high mountains. Base jumping can be very dangerous as you compete to be the quickest to reach solid ground.

SKY DIVING: This sport also uses a parachute. Divers are taken up to a certain height in an aeroplane. They have parachutes strapped to their backs. They then jump out of the plane and freefall before opening their parachute at the correct moment. The parachute is to stop them from hitting the ground at a great speed, which would be very dangerous. The most important thing about this sport is knowing when exactly to open the parachute.

ROCK CLIMBING: This is the activity of climbing up and down very steep rock formations. This sport needs special equipment to keep the climbers safe. A climber has to have great strength of body and mind. It is better to climb in small groups, so that there is someone to help in the case of an emergency.

ICE CLIMBING: This is almost the same as rock climbing. The difference is that the climbers are climbing up and down steep walls of ice, such as frozen waterfalls. Special equipment is needed to keep climbers safe. Ice climbing is quite dangerous because ice changes as it melts or freezes. It is really difficult to know exactly how hard or how soft ice will be. Ice breaks easily so climbers need to concentrate very hard when they are climbing.

  • 29、   Vaping can be just as damaging to your health as smoking. But the minute you kick the habit, you’ll feel a difference.

Vaping is the use of electronic cigarettes — e-cigarettes. Vaping became mainstream in the United States in the late 2000s. When e-cigarettes first hit the market, people believed they were a safer choice to tobacco cigarettes. We now know, however, that vaping, like smoking cigarettes can be quite damaging to your health and equally addictive.

Kids and teenagers are especially attracted to vaping, thanks to attractive flavors. Vape use in high school students rose by 900 percent between 2011 and 2015. Quitting vaping can be difficult, just like trying to stop smoking. There are some immediate, though often temporary, negative effects. The positive ones soon outpace the negative, however.

In as little as 20 minutes, your heart rate returns to normal, your blood pressure drops, and your circulation starts to normalize. Your breathing may improve, too. Daily e-cigarette doubles a persons risk for a heart attack. If you quit, however, the risk begins to fall very quickly. Also, vaping, like cigarette smoking, can blunt your senses, reducing your ability to smell and taste. After just 48 hours without vaping, you may begin to notice your ability to taste and smell food has improved. Nicotine affects more than your brain: new research suggests nicotine can raise your blood sugar, too.

Smokers often have a troublesome cough or make a breathless sound when they breathe that many refer to as a smokers cough. Smoking even e-cigarettes can badly harm your lung health and make fighting off infections difficult. Quitting, however, will help your lungs recover. After one month, your lung capacity improves. There will come a day when the bad habit of vaping won’t have any lasting influence on your body and your health.

1What did Americans think of e-cigarettes?

A.They were cheaper. B.They were less harmful.

    C.They were more fashionable. D.They were environment-friendly.

2What makes vaping popular among kids and teenagers?

    A.Its colour. B.Its price. C.Its shape. D.Its taste.

3What does the underlined word “blunt” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.dull. B.sharp. C.improve. D.benefit.

4What does the author intend to do by writing the text?

A.Introduce the wide use of e-cigarettes. B.Point out how e-cigarettes harm the old.

C.Encourage people to refuse e-cigarettes. D.Compare e-cigarettes with traditional ones.

四、短文填空 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 34、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

AI artwork sells for $432,500 — nearly 45 times its high1 — as Christie’s becomes the first auction house to offer a work of art created by an algorithm. This portrait, however, is not the product of a human mind. It was created by an2 intelligence, an algorithm defined by that algebraic formula with its many parentheses. And when it went under the3 in the Prints & Multiples sale at Christie’s on 23-25 October, Portrait of Edmond Belamy sold for an4 $432,500, signaling the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage.

From a distance, Portrait of Edmond de Belamy looks almost plausible. Up close, however, the paintwork becomes a grid of mechanical-looking dots, the man’s face a golden blur with black holes for eyes. Look into those eyes. They show no sign of feeling or life. Did a computer make this?

The answer is yes. The first artwork5 by AI to be sold at Christie’s, its6 price would seem to suggest that in future we will get computers to make art for us. Robot van Gogh will harmlessly cut its ear off and robot Picasso will be a genius.

Is this the future AI art visionaries such as the French collective Obvious, which programmed this “painter” by getting it to compare its own work with 15,000 pre-20th century portraits, have in mind? Or are they just, God forbid, making a fast buck from deceivable art collectors? Because believing the algorithm that knocked this up to be in any meaningful way an “artist” is like thinking your voice-interaction programme is out to get you. Dream on. Computers would need to replicate human consciousness before they could replicate the funny thing humans do called “art”.

Art is a way in which human 7 expresses itself, and is equally true of the earliest cave art, Rembrandt’s portraits and Duchamp’s urinal. And that is what is missing from Portrait of Edmond Bellamy. Art is a way humans communicate ideas, perceptions and feelings to each other. It has no 8 outside the human passion to communicate. So in what meaningful sense can an AI replica of certain9 traits of old master paintings be called art?

For a robot to really make art, it would need an autonomous mind that was emotional as well as10. No AI developer has yet claimed to be anywhere near achieving that and if they ever do, their creation will probably have better things to do than paint portraits — like destroy humanity.

Maybe afterwards robots will invent their own kind of art, but it won’t be some poor pastiche of human genius.

It will be beyond anything we organics could imagine.

Smell the flowers before you go to sleep and you may just end up with rosy dreams. Have a whiff of rotten(腐烂的)eggs during the night and your dreams may be1(pleasant). So says researcher Dr. Boris Stuck, 2invited sleeping volunteers to a rose vs. rotten egg test in the University Hospital Mannheim in Germany. The subjects didn’t dream about roses3eggs, but rather he found that what they smelt affected the emotions of4(they) dreams.

And if you think5(smell) have a say in dreams, wait for what TV tells us. A UK study reveals that people exposed6black-and-white film and TV in their youth are to have monochromic(单色的)dreams throughout their life more7(probable). Eva Murzyn from the University of Dundee tested two age groups— one half 8(age) over 55 and9other half under 25.

The result? Under 5% of the dreams of the under-25s were in black and white. 10(watch)color TV in childhood seems to be the reason why.

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.

  • 40、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Sara Savick remembers one special Easter when she was nine years old. Her parents gave her a baby duckling in a yellow basket.

“Mom said later that she bought the little duck because she felt sorry for it,” recalled Sara. The people at the pet store colored the feathers pink for Easter. Sara named the duck Pinky.

Sara’s mother really didn’t think the baby duck would survive very long. But to her surprise, Pinky grew and got stronger and stronger. Soon, the little duckling was a healthy, hungry duck with white feathers.

“We fed Pinky oatmeal, cooked and uncooked, and small pieces of vegetables,” said Sara. Pinky lived inside the house with Sara and her family. She specially fancied taking baths with Sara. Everyone treated Pinky as a family member.

But just when everything appeared to be perfect, the night of the “talk” came. Sara’s Mom and Dad sat her down, explaining that the best thing for Pinky was to live a normal duck life, with other ducks. It was not natural for ducks to live indoors with a family, her father told her. He added Pinky needed to swim in ponds and do all the same things that ducks in the wild do.

Sara started to cry, knowing what was going to happen. Sara’s parents decided to take Pinky to a park, which was two miles away. There was a pond with a lot of other ducks. Pinky would have the chance to live a natural life and Sara could still visit her.

The big day came, Sara and her parents put Pinky in a box and drove to the park. Sara said that Pinky did not look happy; maybe Pinky was convinced that she was a human, not a duck.
