二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going. When the world was still populated by hunter-gatherers, small, tightly knit (联系) groups developed their own patterns of speech independent of each other. Some language experts believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.

Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling down to become farmers, and their languages too became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialization, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education, especially globalisation and better communications in the past few decades, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.

At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. The distribution of these languages is hugely uneven. The general rule is that mild zones have relatively few languages, often spoken by many people, while hot, wet zones have lots, often spoken by small numbers. Europe has only around 200 languages; the Americas about 1,000; Africa 2400; and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone accounts for well over 800. The median number (中位数) of speakers is a mere 6,000, which means that half the world’s languages are spoken by fewer people than that.

Already well over 400 of the total of, 6,800 languages are close to extinction (消亡), with only a few elderly speakers left. Pick, at random, Busuu in Cameroon (eight remaining speakers), Chiapaneco in Mexico (150), Lipan Apache in the United States (two or three) or Wadjigu in Australia (one, with a question-mark): none of these seems to have much chance of survival.

【1】What can we infer about languages in hunter-gatherer times?

    A.They developed very fast.

    B.They were large in number.

    C.They had similar patterns.

    D.They were closely connected.

【2】Which of the following best explains “dominant” underlined in Paragraph 2?

    A.Complex.

    B.Advanced.

    C.Powerful.

    D.Modern.

【3】How many languages are spoken by less than 6,000 people at present?

    A.About 6,800.

    B.About 3,400.

    C.About 2,400.

    D.About 1,200.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

    A.New languages will be created.

B.People’s lifestyles are reflected in languages.

C.Human development results in fewer languages.

    D.Geography determines language evolution.

Four Steps to Begin Your Path to GreatnessFeeling stuck is quite common. Many times, we have thoughts and dreams of what we want in life.【1】Our thinking pattern holds us back from going forward. The good news is, at any moment in time, we have the ability to start taking action toward creating the life we want. Here are four steps to get started:1. Celebrate Your Success.Write down all the successes you’ve already achieved and all the awesomeness that you are today.【2】And once you’re in that positive routine with your thoughts, it will lead you to make better choices and take better actions toward your greatness.2. Create Your True Vision. Many times we live based on others’ expectations or we stay stuck in a particular place because it’s our safety zone. Own your path. It can be hard to do, but allow yourself to get out of your head(or stop listening to what others want for you) and focus on your heart and what it's telling you.【3】3.【4】If you want to start going to the gym, going 5 days a week right away is extreme, and setting yourself up by biting more than you can chew typically doesn’t result in success, but failure. Instead, start slow and go once or twice a week. After you do that for a while and get into a nice routine, up it to more days. Over time, you will build toward your goal by taking realistic, smaller steps to get there.4.Have the Right Support.【5】Find the right support to cheer you on in the process. It could be a friend, a family member, or significant other who you trust. Whoever it may be, having someone on your journey will be just what you need to keep you on track and celebrate with you as you work toward the life you dream of.

    A.Don’t do it alone.

    B.Be realistic about your goals.

C.Be kind to yourself and accept the moment.

D.Your failure can lead you to another success.

E.This practice will direct your thinking to a positive place.

F.Sadly, they only stay as thoughts and dreams inside of us.

G.Look within yourself deeply and decide what you want and what’s true for you.

  • 29、   One August many summers ago, I was fishing down a small stream. I did not know when the two sparrows discovered me. In the bush beside me, they were deeply upset, spreading their wings, repeating over and over a rough single note.

When I stopped fishing, they flew to another bush upstream. I thought that perhaps they had new babies somewhere nearby and wanted to lead me away from them, but as I had no intention of harming them, I continued my fishing.

Immediately the two sparrows came back, fluttering before my face. I stopped again to watch them. Once more they flew to a bush upstream, but the minute I faced downstream again, they were back around my head. Not until then did it come to me that maybe they wanted me to go with them rather than lead me from something.

As soon as I started going in their direction, they fluttered on, much less noisily now. I followed them for perhaps a hundred feet until they came to rest in another bush. I looked where they were looking.

There, its tiny leg caught in a crack of a tree stem, hung a baby bird. It hung totally lifeless. I went up, carefully got the little body out and held it for several minutes cupped in my hands. Finally its eyes opened and the stretched leg moved. Both the sparrows had already come close to me. They had obviously no fear of me. I put the baby bird on a branch near its parents and released it only when I saw it take hold of the branch.

I went back to my fishing, but nothing that happened during the rest of the day was as exciting as my meeting with the sparrows. Few things that have happened to me have moved me more since then.

1The two sparrows fluttered beside the author noisily to _______.

A.lead him upstream for more fish B.seek his help for a trapped baby bird

C.warn him of the hidden danger in the bush D.direct his attention away from their new babies

2From Paragraph 5 we can learn that _______.

A.the bird parents were too tired to take care of the baby bird

B.the author was extremely careful so as not to hurt the baby bird

C.the baby bird was dying because it had been injured by a branch

D.the bush was not safe so the author had to hold the baby bird in his hand

3What moved the author so much that afternoon?

A.His saving the life of a baby bird. B.His discovering the fearless sparrows.

C.The sparrows’ deep concern for their baby. D.The sparrows’ unique way of communication.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. On November 18, 1995, Itzhak Perlman, the world famous violinist, came on stage to give a concert at Lincoln Centre in New York City. If you have ever been to a Perlman's concert, you know that getting on stage is not easy for him. He got polio(小儿麻痹症) as a child, and has to walk with the aid of two crutches(拐杖) now.

That night Perlman walked slowly to his chair. Then he sat down and began to play. But, suddenly, one of the strings on his violin broke, You could hear it breakit broke with a loud noise. People thought to themselves, "He will have to get up to either find another violin or find another string for this one. " But he didn't. Instead, he waited a moment, closed his eyes and then signaled the conductor to begin again. The orchestra began, and he played from where he had stopped. He played with such passion and such power. Of course, everyone knows that it is impossible to play a symphonic work with just three strings. But that night Itzhak Perlman refused to know that. You could see him changing and recomposing the piece in his head

When he finished, there was a silence in the room. Then people rose and cheered. We were all on our feet, doing everything we could to show how much we appreciated what he had done. He smiled and then he said in a quiet tone, "You know, sometimes it is the artist's task to find out how much music you can make with what you have left.”

His words have stayed in my mind ever since I heard them. That is also the way of life. Perhaps our task in this quickly changing world in which we live is to make music, at first with all that we have, and then, when that is no longer possible, to make music with what we have left.
