  • 26、   Mark and his brother Jason both were looking at the shining new computer enviously. Jason was determined not to go against their father’s wishes but Mark was more adventurous than his brother. He loved experimenting and his aim was to become a scientist like his father.

“Dad will be really mad if he finds out you’ve been playing with his new computer.” Jason said, “He told us not to touch it.”

“He won’t find out.” Mark said, “I’ll just have a quick look and shut it down.”

Mark had been scolded before for touching his father’s equipment. But his curiosity was difficult to control and this new computer really puzzled him.

It was a strange-looking machine –one his dad had brought home from the laboratory where he worked. “It’s an experimental model,” his father had explained, “so don’t touch it under any circumstances.” But his warning only served to make Mark more curious. Without any further thought, Mark turned on the power switch. The computer burst into life and seconds later, the screen turned into colors, shifting and changing and then two big white words appeared in the center of the screen: “SPACE TRANSPORTER.”

“Yes!” Mark cried excitedly, “It’s a computer game. I knew it! Dad’s only been pretending to work. He’s really been playing games instead.” A new message appeared on the screen:

    ENTER NAMES

    VOYAGER 1: …   VOYAGER 2: …

Mark’s fingers flew across the keyboard as he typed in both of their names.

INPUT ACCEPTED. START TRANSPORT PROGRAM. AUTO-RETRIEVE INITIATED(自动回收程序已启动)

The screen turned even brighter and a noise suddenly rose in volume.

“I think we’d better shut it off, Mark,” Jason yelled, reaching for the power switch. He was really frightened.

But his hand never reached the switch. A single beam of dazzling white light burst out of the computer screen, wrapping the boys in its glow (光芒), until they themselves seemed to be glowing. Then it died down just as suddenly as it had burst into life. And the boys were no longer there. On the screen, the letters changed.

TRANSPORT SUCCESSFUL. DESTINATION: MARS. RETRIEVE DATE: 2025.

1Why did Mark touch the computer against his father’s warning?

A.He wanted to take a voyage. B.He wanted to practice his skill.

C.He was so much attracted by it. D.He was eager to do an experiment.

2Mark thought SPACE TRANSPORTER on the screen was the name of   .

A.a computer game B.a company website

C.a software producer D.an astronomy program

3Why did Jason want to shut off the computer?

A.He was afraid of being scolded.

B.He didn’t like the loud noise and light.

C.He didn’t want to play games any more.

D.He was afraid something dangerous might happen.

4What happened to the boys at the end of the story?

A.They were blown into the air.

B.They were sent to another planet.

C.They were hidden in the strong light.

D.They were carried away to another country

  • 27、From my earlier memory of Mother it somehow seemed quite natural to think of her as different, nor of everyday things as Father was. In those days he was a young-looking man. He did not hesitate to make friends with children as soon as they were able to talk to him and laugh at his stories. Mother was older than he was. She must have been a woman of nearly forty, but she seemed even older. She changed little for a long time, showing no indication of growing old at all until, towards the end of her life, she suddenly became an old lady.

I was always inquisitive about Mother’s age. She never had birthdays like other people, nor did anyone else in our family. No candles were ever lit or cakes made or presents given in our house. To my friends in the street who talked delightfully about their birthday parties, I would repeat my mother’s words that such celebrations were only foolish.

“Nothing but deception,” she would say. “As though life can be marked by birthdays. It’s deeds, not years, that matter.”

Although I often repeated her words and even prided myself on not having birthdays, I once could not help asking Mother when she was born.

“I was born. I’m alive as you can see, so what more do you want to know?” she replied, so sharply that I never asked her about her age again.

In so many other ways Mother was different. Whereas all the rest of the women I knew in the neighboring hoses took pride in their housewifely abilities, their new furniture, the neat appearance of their homes, Mother regarded all those things as of little importance. Our house always looked as if we had just moved in or were about to move out.

  • 28、A 293-million-mile journey of the NASA Perseverance rover(探测器)to Mars: ended successfully on February 18, 2021, with a picture-perfect landing inside the Jezero Crater. The car-sized, six-wheeled rover, nicknamed Percy is the US space agency's biggest and most advanced explorer to date. Its primary mission is to search for signs of ancient microbial(微生物的)life on Mars.

Landing on Mars is extremely tricky. The Red Planet's gravitational pull causes approaching spacecraft to go faster to high speeds, while its thin atmosphere-just 1 percent that of Earth's-does little to help slow it down as it approaches the surface.

The scientists had to reduce Percy's 12,000 mph speed to a safe landing speed of less than five mph-in just six and a half minutes. The target entry angle also had to be a precise 12 degrees-any steeper, and the spacecraft would burn up; any flatter, and it would get lost in space. It is no wonder that the final approach is often referred to as the "seven minutes of terror."

Upon attaining a manageable speed, Percy briefly flew over the Martian surface to seek out the perfect landing spot. Its complex map-reading system rapidly scanned the area and matched it with maps in its database to find the best location.

The NASA scientists will spend the next two months testing Percy's scientific instruments. Once ready, the rover will begin to carry out its mission.

"Perseverance is the smartest robot ever made, but confirming that microbial life once existed carries an unusually large burden of proof," said Lori Glaze, director of NASA's Planetary Science Division. "While we'll learn a lot with the great instruments we have aboard the rover, it may very well require the far more well-equipped laboratories and delicate instruments back here on Earth to tell us whether our samples(样本)carry evidence that Mars once harbored life."

【1】What is the extraordinary challenge for the rover to land on Mars?

    A.The speed reduction.

    B.The atmosphere analysis.

    C.The location search.

    D.The time management.

【2】What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.Ways to find the precise entry angle.

    B.Consequences of wrong entry degree.

C.Factors to survive "the seven minutes".

D.Reasons for the necessity of speed reducing.

【3】What does "it" refer to in paragraph 4?

    A.The spot.

    B.The area.

    C.The system.

    D.The surface.

【4】What can be inferred from Lori Glaze's words?

A.Instruments aboard the rover are not quite reliable.

B.Perseverance is able to collect enough evidence needed.

C.Man still has long way to go to prove life was on Mars.

D.Samples of Mars will be returned soon to our labs on the earth.

  • 29、Summertime is often filled with outdoor parties and food trucks, meaning you’re spending more time standing up and eating. But if you want to actually enjoy your meal, researchers say you’re better off finding a seat.

A new study published in the Journal of Consumer Research finds posture impacts taste perception (感知), with food tasting better when you’re sitting down. Dpayan Biswas, professor of marketing at the University of South Florida, found that holding a standing posture for even a few minutes leads to physical stress, muting taste perception. The force of gravity pushes blood to the lower parts of the body, causing the heart to work harder to pump blood back up to the top of the body, accelerating heart rate. When people experience discomfort, foods that normally taste good do not appear as pleasant to the tongue. Biswas confirmed his assumption by having 350 participants rate the taste of a pita chip. Those who were standing gave it a less favorable rating than those who were sitting in a chair.

Researchers then provided participants classic bite sized cakes baked at a local restaurant that were tested and widely considered pleasant tasting. Those who were sitting down rated them to be most delicious. However, when the baker changed the recipe and made the taste unpleasant by adding an extra cup of salt, the results were opposite. Participants standing up didn’t notice the cakes tasting saltier to that extent, and actually rated them to have a relatively more favorable taste perception than those who sampled them while sitting down.

“This finding suggests that parents might be able to make unpleasant-tasting, healthy foods seem more delicious to reluctant (不情愿的) children by having them eat standing up (vs. sitting down). Also it might be beneficial to maintain a standing posture when consuming medical products that have unpleasant tastes.”

In addition, the team tested posture’s impact on temperature perception. Participants were provided cups of hot coffee. Those standing up reported it not being as intense as those who were sitting down. However, they drank less than those sitting, suggesting physical stress suppresses appetite. Eating while standing can also help with long-term weight loss goals. Specifically, eating while standing (vs. sitting) leads to lower amount of consumption.

【1】What’s the main idea of the text?

A.Summer is the best season to enjoy tasty food.

B.Your posture influence your food perception.

C.You had better stand up when eating food.

D.Sitting down helps you enjoy your food.

    D.disapproving

【3】According to the passage, how many experiments were conducted by Dipayan Biswas and his team?

    A.1.

    B.2.

    C.3.

    D.4.

【4】A standing position while eating is especially beneficial to those except ________.

A.a girl who wants to keep slim

B.a couple who are enjoying their dinner

C.a child who is unwilling to take bitter pills

D.a mum whose children refuse to eat tasteless food
