24、David Bennett, a 57-year-old man from the US, received the world’s first pig heart transplant (移植) on January 7th, 2022. He died two months later. It may sound like a failure, but it actually is a big step forward for xenotransplantation (异种器官移植).
Xenotransplantation has been a hot topic in medical research for many years. Doctors and scientists look for ways to solve the big problem of organ (器官) transplant waiting lists. In the US alone, over 100,000 patients are on a list waiting for new organs. Many will die before getting their chance to receive a heart, a kidney (肾) or other important organs. As a result, medical science has turned to animal organs.
There have been few successful xenotransplantation cases since the early 20th century. Usually, patients’ bodies reject (排斥) the animal organs. Bennett lived much longer than other xenotransplantation patients. That’s because the scientists removed pig genes (基因) that would cause fast rejection. Then they added human genes to help the body accept the organ.
In fact, Bennett’s case was not the only success. “A lot of new information that doctors got through other organ transplants will come out. The development of this field will benefit from it and move forward at a faster speed.” Muhammad Mohiuddin, director of the transplant program, told The Guardian.

25、Can you swim? Swimming is one of the most popular activities in summer. It can be learned early in life. Little children can learn to swim as soon as they walk. In fact, you need the same skills in walking as in swimming. However, I believe that five is the best age to learn it. By five or six, a child knows fear of water, a very important thing to know. It’s wise to be afraid. The young understand that the water can sometimes be very dangerous.
When you swim, you should follow certain rules:
★ Never swim alone! No matter how good you are in the water, don’t risk drowning by swimming alone. If you swim by yourself, you may get into trouble.
★ Don’t go beyond your abilities. Most swimmers know it clearly not to swim too far from the bank or the beach.
★ Don’t show off your skills by doing dangerous tricks.
★ Don't smoke. Swimming depends on a healthy body.
★ Work at any activity that builds muscles (肌肉).
【1】Little children can learn to swim as soon as _________ .

C. they have no fear of the water
D. they are five or six years old
【2】The writer believes it’s very __________for a child to know the fear of water.

26、 Which hand do you use to write your name? Which foot do you use to kick a ball? You probably use the same hand or foot. That’s called your dominant side.
About 90 percent of humans are right-handed. Scientists want to know if other animals also have dominant sides. So they give simple challenges to zoo animals and pets.
At first, chimpanzee (大猩猩) appeared to be left-handed. Dr. Hopkins watched chimpanzees as they went “ants fishing”, using sticks to pull ants out. Most of the chimps did the job with their left hand. However, when chimpanzees ate butter from a narrow pipe, they tended to use the left hand to do the easy part (hold the pipe) and a finger on the right hand to do the hard part (reach in for the treat).
Does that mean chimpanzees are left-handed for some tasks and right-handed for others? That’s not likely. Dr. Hopkins says the chimps may have used the weaker hand to pull out the ants and the dominant hand to hit the insects and put them in mouths.
But how about other animals? Dr. Wells wondered if cats are right-or left-pawed. At the beginning, he gave the cats the simple task of moving across the floor. The cats showed no preference; they used either paw. Dr. Wells also made the cats perform given movements. The researcher dropped a small fish into a can and wrote down which paw each cat used to fish out the treat. All of the female cats except one used the right paw. For males, 19 out of 21 used the left paw. Dr. Wells tested each cat many times to make sure it really preferred to use one paw instead of the other.
【1】In Paragraph 1, the word “dominant” can be replaced by ________.
A.gentle
B.powerful
C.opposite
D.unique
【2】What can we learn from Dr. Hopkins’ research?
A.Chimpanzees use right hands for tough tasks.
B.About 10 percent humans are left-handed.

B.discovered it was not a simple yes or no
C.raised different animals to seek the truth
D.worked together to perform experiments
27、 At East China University of Science and Technology, students will get a coupon(优惠券)if they eat up their food. Students can collect coupons and exchange them for small gifts, such as books, magazines, mobile phone covers and band warmers.
“It’s been such a surprise,” said Liang Zhaoyun, 19, a student at the university in Shanghai. “It has given us one more motivation to finish our food.”
The measure is part of a national “eat-up” campaign(行动)which is organized by students to deal with food waste on campuses(校园).
Why only on campuses, you might ask?Because according to a report by Xinhua News Agency, students
waste twice as much food as the national average(平均).
The campaign on campus food waste is receiving attention across the country. “The aim of the campaign is not only to encourage students to finish their food. We hope it can also encourage students to choose a more environment-friendly and healthy lifestyle,” said Tao Siliang, secretary of the Youth League Committee at Shanghai University.
But some school food is poorly prepared,so students do not like to finish it all. Some schools have taken notice of this and they are taking measures to improve it.
“I’m glad that we've reduced food waste since ‘eat-up’' campaign began. But if we call on students to waste less food,we should also improve the service and food standard on campuses,” said Tao.
