24、The mouse is the first of the 12 animals which represent years. The others are the ox, the tiger, the rabbit, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the goat, the monkey, the rooster, the dog and the pig.
There are different ideas about the origin of them. A popular story says, long long ago, God asked all the animals to pay him a visit on New Year’s Day. He said he would give the first 12 animals the title “the King of the Animal World” and let each hold the title for one year.
Now you may be wondering why there is no year of the Cat, especially since cats have been popular as pets for thousands of years in China as well as in many other countries. Well, in the story, the cat was a day late to get to God’s palace. The mouse had played a trick on him. He lied to the cat by telling him a wrong date for the competition.
Another story says that people have been using animals to symbolize years since ancient times. Different groups had different animals as their totems(图腾). Gradually, these animals were used to remember the years.
This year is the year of the Tiger. Do you know what will happen to you this month? Click on www.leiway.com to check it out.

25、A.根据以下内容,选择最恰当的答案
Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his objective is to find it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock, the salesman promptly produces it, and the business of trying it on follows at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyone’s satisfaction.
For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name implies, tries to sell the customer something else, he offers the nearest he can to the article required. No good salesman brings out such a substitute(代用品)impolitely; he does so with skill: “I know this jacket is not the style you want, sir, but would you like to try it for size? It happens to be the colour you mentioned.” Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual response is: “This is the right colour and may be the right size, but I should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on.”
Now how does a woman go about buying clothes? In almost every respect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only “having a look round”. She is always open to persuasion; indeed she sets great shop by what the saleswoman tells her, even by what companions tell her. She will try on any number of things. uppermost(最重要的)in her mind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her. Contrary to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always on the lockout(停工;停止)for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one rail to another to and fro(来回地;往复), often retracing (折返)her stops, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a laborious(艰苦的)process, but apparently an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.

B.He usually does not buy anything.

【5】What happens if a woman buys clothes in a shop?

C.The time they take over buying clothes.
D.Men go shopping based on need, but women never.
26、On November 5th, 1872, the Mary Celeste left New York to sail to Italy. The captain, his wife and daughter and seven sailors were on board. But something terrible happened. The captain of another ship found the Mary Celeste floating (漂浮) in the middle of the sea on December 4th, 1872. The captain, his family and the sailors were not on the ship and were never found.
What happened? Why did the sailors and passengers leave the ship? The Mary Celeste was not broken. Everything was good. There was no fighting, no fire and no smoke sign. There was still plenty of food and drinking water left. There were signs that the captain, his family and the sailors had left the ship in a hurry. We could tell all these because there was half-eaten food on the table. The sailors also left all their clothing behind. Even their shoes were beside their beds.
How and when did the people leave the ship? Some people said that the lifeboat (救生艇) was still on the ship but others said it was missing. The captain’s diary was found on the ship and the last entry (记录) was made on November 24th. So, we could only guess that the happening time was between November 24th and December 4th.

27、Have you ever heard voices from the universe? What secrets lurk(潜藏)in the signals of pulsars(脉冲星)Y 16, 000 light-years from Earth? Our eyes may not be able to explore these distant mysteries.
China’s Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope(望远镜)(FAST), commonly known as “Sky Eye”, the world’s largest single-aperture(单口径)radio telescope, officially opened to the world on March 31.
The giant telescope is the size of 30 soccer fields. “Before FAST was put into use, China’s radio telescopes usually had a diameter of fewer than 50 meters,” said Wang Qiming, FAST’s chief technologist, “ FAST marks a huge leap(飞跃)forward” Not only is the telescope leading in size, but it’s also leading in terms of sensitivity(敏感度).
FAST is about 2.5 times as sensitive as the second-largest telescope in the world, the Arecibo, Observatory in Puerto Rico, reported Shine, a Shanghai-based media platform. That is to say, if you make a phone call from the moon, it can detect the signal, according to CNR News.
Since its completion in September 2016, it has found more than 300 pulsars(脉冲星)-objects thought to be rapidly rotating neutron(中子)stars that emits(发射)regular pulses(脉冲)of radio waves. To date, FAST has expanded(扩大)four times the volume of the space range that radio telescopes can effectively explore, which means that scientists can discover more unknown cosmic(宇宙的)phenomena(现象), according to Shine.
Experts believe “Sky Eye” will surprise us in the future. “FAST has the potential(潜力)to detect signals from thousands of superior planets. Maybe aliens with much more advanced technologies live there,” Li Di, told China Daily.
“TAST may well be the instrument(仪器)enabling great discoveries, perhaps even discoveries that will earn Nobel or other, significant prizes” Sheldon Glashow, winner of the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics, told China Daily. He also has high expectations(期望)for FAST.
Now “Sky Eye” has changed from “China’s eye” to the world’s eye”. About 10 percent of FAST’s observation(观测)time in the first year, roughly 450 hours(分配)to foreign scientists, said Li Di.
“FAST provides astronomical(天文的)capabilities not available anywhere else in the world. Astronomers and physicists who need those capabilities will surely take advantage of China’s generosity in making the tools widely available, Joseph Taylor Jr., told China Daily.
【1】What does the article tell us about FAST?
A.It is about 2.5 times as large as Arecibo.
B.It can “see” objects 30 million light- years away.
C.It helped Chinese physicists win a Nobel Prize.
D.It has been available to foreign scientists since March 31.
【2】What has FAST allowed scientists to do?
A.Send pulses of radio waves into the universe.
B.Know more about pulsars in the universe.
C.Answer phone calls from the moon. .
D.Change the way neutron stars emit pulses.
【3】What is the main purpose of the article?
A.To compare FAST and Arecibo.
B.To describe how FAST works.
C.To introduce a new way to observe neutron stars.
D.To inform readers of advantages and potential use of FAST.
28、Survey Says? Libraries Lead!
You might guess that Americans’ top go-to spot for culture and entertainment would be a movie theater or sports stadium. But a recent study p【1】 a place doesn't need buttered popcorn to attract visitors.
In 2019, the research company did a survey about Americans’ leisure activities. People were asked how often in the last year they had visited certain types of p【2】. These included libraries, museums, theme parks, and zoos. Libraries topped over the competition. They got more than twice as many total visits as movie theaters, which landed at number two.
Being number one is nothing new for libraries. The findings of a s【3】 study in 2001 were about the same. But one thing has changed since then. Today, many people can c【4】to the Internet. They’re able to read just about anything, just about anywhere. Some people predicted the Internet would make libraries out of date. However, it’s actually part of their popularity. In 2016, a Pew Research Center study found that 29 percent of adults went there to use computers, the Internet, or Wi-Fi. But the most c【5】 reason people go to the library is to check out books.
What books do library-goers borrow the most? The New York Public Library (NYPL) set out to answer this question. In 2020, the library released a list of the most checked-out books in its 125-year history.
Three books in the top five are kids’ favorites, i【6】 Where the Wild Things Are (#4) and The Car in the Hat (#2). The highest honor, meanwhile, goes to The Snowy Day (#1). It's a beautifully illustrated (有插图的) tale about boy exploring city turned into winter wonderland. The book has been checked out almost half a million times.
Why are so many children's books on the list? One reason is that they're short. So they’re read and returned f【7】. As The Cat in the Hat might put it: a quick-to-read hit comes back lickety-split!
