24、Look carefully at the back of a California state quarter(25美分). A man with a walking stick is pictured there. Who is this man? And why is he so important that he is features on the back of a coin?

Rowing is a good sport for people. The sport is not so commonly played in China, but almost half of all American high schools have rowing teams. Recently, the school where I study had a rowing season that gave me many great experiences.
During the season, we practiced rowing a lot. We got up at six every Saturday morning and practiced for three hours out on the river. Each one of us had an oar(浆), and we each rowed one oar with both hands. Together we pulled the oars, and the oars pushed the water back so the boat would move forward. After three hours of practice, we often felt very tired, because rowing is a very physical sport. When you row, you do a lot of work with your thighs and back.
Though the practices were very hard, I chose to do them because I like the joy hard work brings. At every practice, I always did my best. Even when the coaches were not there, I kept rowing hard with my hands because I wanted to find out how well I could do. In order to move the boat fast, everyone on the team must keep the same pace (速度), so we needed to work together.
The hard work I did during the rowing helped me develop my teamwork qualities. The experience also taught me that if you want to get something, you need to pay something first. As Americans like to say, “No pains no gains!”
【1】We can infer (推断) that the writer is _________.
A.a Chinese student studying in the USA
B.a rowing coach from America
C.a teacher of an American high school

A.Every three hours.
B.Every morning.

A.use their hands to push the water
B.row at the same speed
C.use their thighs and backs less
【4】From the story, we know that the writer _________.
A.doesn’t like hard work
B.likes to challenge herself
C.is not good at physical sports
【5】In the last paragraph, the writer wants to tell us that __________.
A.we won’t achieve success if we don’t work hard

C.a strong body is very important for our dreams
26、Last week, my granddaughter started kindergarten, and I wished her every success. But part of me didn’t. I actually wanted her to fail in some ways because I believe that failure can be good for our learning process(过程). Success is proving that you can do something that you already know you can do, or doing something correctly the first time, which can often be a problematic (存在问题的) victory. First-time success is usually luck. First-time failure, however, is supposed to be the natural order of things. Failure is how we learn.
In Africa they describe a good cook as “She who has broken many pots.” If you’ve spent enough time in the kitchen to have broken a lot of cookers, probably you know a lot about cooking. I once had dinner with a group of cooks, and they spent time comparing knife wounds and burn marks. They knew how much value their failures gave them.
I make my living by writing a daily newspaper. Each week I know that one part I write is going to be the worst part. I try my best every day. I have learned to love writing. A successful article usually means that I am discussing my familiar topic, writing in a style I am used to or saying the same things as anyone else but in a better way.
My younger daughter is a trapeze artist (荡秋千演员). She spent three years practicing a show, and she did it successfully for years. There was no reason for her to change it but she did anyway. She said she was no longer learning anything new and she was bored. And if she was bored, there was no meaning in putting her body into all that stress. She risked failure and great public embarrassment(尴尬) in order to improve herself.
My granddaughter is a perfectionist. She will feel her failures, and I will want to comfort her. But I will also, I hope, remind her of what she learned, and how she can do better next time. I hope I can tell her, though, that it’s not the end of the world. Indeed, with luck, it is the beginning.
【1】What does the writer think of his daughter’s changing her show?
A.He doesn’t think it wise of his daughter to do so.
B.He is worried about the risk his daughter takes.
C.He is very excited about his daughter’s decision.

A.past failures made him afraid of taking risks in writing
B.we should try every possible way to avoid failure
C.the thought of failure will make you work even harder
D.we cannot depend on luck to live a good life
【3】The writer develops the article mainly by ________.
A.following the time order
B.giving examples
C.comparing different opinions
D.giving a reason and its results

To her s【7】 , she soon became the target of criticism(批评的目标) from some people standing beside her.
“Shameless,” a voice said.
“Morality decays(道德败坏),” another voice added.
Lisa kept s【8】 as the short conversation went. She didn’t want to say anything. She “should” feel ashamed(羞愧). Lisa turned her face to the window to hide her embarrassment(尴尬).
If you were a passenger on that bus, would you stand out against her and blame(责怪) her for not giving up her seat? If I hadn’t known the story of Lisa’s side, I would. However, the truth is: Lisa had just a small o【9】 in hospital last week and was in recovery (恢复). Her doctor had told her to sit instead of s【10】 as much as possible. The long bus trip would give her trouble if she stood all the way.
