    Relax yourself.

Before you start to listen to something", you need to relax. Don't get nervous or excited. This will help you with your listening.

Listen carefully to the first sentence.

The first sentence tells a lot about the whole passage. For example, if at the very beginning, you hear "Many shops in many parts of China have decided to talk away all kinds of Japanese goods off their shelves but some people say it's not a good idea. Our reporter says..." you know you will hear a piece of news, not a children's story, or a science report.

    Think when you're listening.

When you're listening, try to do some thinking. For example, you can think of the following questions: What happened When, where and how? What was the result and what does the speaker want to tell us? This way, you may understand the passage better.

You may hear some words that you don't know, but don't spend too much time on them. Very often, you'll find out what they mean later when you go on with the listening. But you can remember some words or sentences that you think are important, and you can use them when you're answering the questions.

Li was born in Harbin in 1974. He showed great talent for music from an early age. He learned to play the guitar by himself. Later, he became a good guitarist and won the first prize in a national competition. “In my younger days, guitar was like my best friend.” Li said.

Though he studied electronic engineering in Qinghua University, he never gave up music. Then in March 2001, Li formed a group called Shuimu Nianhua with his friend. Later, Li didn’t agree to change their musical style. So the pair went their separate ways next year.

  • 26、Sports, drama, and all kinds of organizations keep students busy during high school. Where do they get the money to do these things? Not everyone gets it from parents. Most have to work for at least some of the money to pay for these activities. Some adults question if high school students should have jobs. I say yes, they undoubtedly should.

Some people worry that teens with after-school jobs will have difficulty finding time for schoolwork. Actually, having a job helps teens make better use of their time. Many jobs take only a couple of hours on weeknights. According to an article, 86 percent of high school students have an after-school, weekend or summer job and students who work between 10 and 20 hours per week during the school year get higher grades than those who do not work at all. Instead of considering working after school a hindrance, it should be looked at as real-world education.

Other people think that work adds too much stress(压力), which may be somewhat true, but whether having a job or not, there is always stress. Better to learn how to deal with busy schedules(日程表)in a controlled environment like high school than to be out on your own and alone in the future, experiencing stress for the first time. I personally would be worried about the teenager who has to become independent without having any experience of working.

The biggest reason teens should work is that it is a healthy way of making money. There are many things teens need to pay for and they cannot do it if they don’t have a job. Not all parents can pay for these activities. My dad told me, “Having a job is a good way to save up for things you are going to need or want to do. You get a lot more out of things if you pay for them yourself.” The sooner kids make money, the sooner they can learn how to use money wisely. If they are not allowed to work in high school, they may have a hard time in the future. Teens should, without a doubt, be allowed to work on school nights.

【1】The word “hindrance” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_______”.

A.something that encourages teens to study

B.something that helps teens improve study

C.something that prevents teens from studying

D.something that makes teens lose interest in study

【2】What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

A.Teens are too busy with study to work at high school.

B.Teens experience stress for the first time at high school.

C.Teens are worried about being independent in the future.

D.Teens who work will deal with stress better in the future.

【3】Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.Working makes teens get lower grades.

B.Working teaches teens to spend money more wisely.

C.Working helps teens to get on better with their parents.

D.Working stops teens from taking part in after-school activities.

【4】What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A.What money means to teens.

B.Why teens should work after school.

C.Whether parents should help teens find jobs.

D.How teens get money for after-school activities.

  • 27、Anyone who has experienced a cyclone (飓风) will tell you how terrible it can be. Highs winds and lots of rain can destroy a city in less then an hour.

A big cyclone, named Cyclone Debbie, hit Australia’s east coast at the end of March. Winds as fast as 263km/h destroyed houses, trees, cars and boats. Sea levels rose and flooded coastal towns, while rivers also flooded. Many cities near rivers went underwater. Hundreds of thousands of people had to leave their homes and farms, and at least eight people died. The cyclone lasted for about three days, but the flooding is still happening two weeks later. Some cities never recover from a cyclone, while it takes others years to rebuild.

A tropical cyclone (热带气旋) begins when a group of thunderstorms meet over warm, tropical waters. Lots of air and water is sucked into the clouds from the ocean. Because Earth is rotating(旋转), the clouds start to spiral(盘旋上升). That is why the tropical cyclone has a curved(弯曲的) shape when you see it on a map. For this reason, tropical cyclones cannot form near the Equator(赤道) because Earth’s rotation isn’t big enough there. When the wind speed increases to 120 km/h, it changes from a tropical cyclone to a hurricane, typhoon(台风)or cyclone.

So what’s the difference between a cyclone, a hurricane, and a typhoon? The answer is actually quite simple.

All three are the same. We just use different names for these storms in different places. In the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific Oceans around the US, it is called hurricane. The same type of storm in the North Pacific near China is called a typhoon and cyclones form in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean near Australia.

1Which of the following about Cyclone Debbie is NOT true?

    A. It hit Australia’s east coast in March.

    B. The wind speed reached 263 km/h.

    C. It caused a huge loss for coastal towns.

    D. The flooding stopped after three days.

2How does a tropical cyclone happen?

    A. When a group of thunderstorms meet warm, tropical waters.

    B. When the water in the ocean flows in a curved shape.

    C. When a group of thunderstorms meet near an Equator.

    D. When the wind speed reaches over 120 km/h

3How can we tell the difference between a cyclone, a hurricane, and a typhoon?

    A. From the time it takes place.   B. From where it takes place.

    C. From how it takes place.   D. From how many people it kills

4Which can be the best title for the passage?

    A. An Introduction of Cyclone Debbie

    B. How a Tropical Cyclone Forms

    C. Cyclone’s Deadly Force (力量)

    D. The Difference between a Cyclone, a Hurricane, and a Typhoon
