24、What do you usually do in your spare time? Chatting online is now a national pastime(消遣) in China, especially among the post-90s and post-00s generation. To some people, however, online chats can seem like a kind of polite conversation. Yet hidden rules do exist(存在), as long as you take the time to look for them.
Get to the Point
When sending a friend request, include your real name and any other identifying(身份辨别) information. Remember, everybody’s time is valuable. If there’s something you want, cut right to the chase. Never send an “Are you there?” without any follow-up messages. The quicker that you get to the point, the more likely the other person is to reply.
Send the Right Things
Please send texts, not voice messages. It might be easier for you to speak than type, but what about the person on the other end? They may be unable to listen to a 59-second message right now. Also, never send information by voice message—it is hard to note down. Emojis(表情符号) and GIFs can save the day when you find yourself in an embarrassing conversation, or words fail you.
Try to Understand
You can always judge a person’s mood by their text messages. If the person you’re talking to says “Good night” or “I’m going to take a shower.” that’s probably not what they’re actually going to do. It is just an excuse to stop talking to you. If someone waits for longer than three seconds before saying “Yes”, they probably really mean “No”. If you receive these emojis from friends who are older, read them literally (照字面地) (such as a smile or a wave). For the post-90s and post-00s generation, however, they could be speechlessness(无语).
【1】What may the underlined sentence mean?
A.Send your real name without any follow-up messages.
B.Tell others what you want without any other useless messages.
C.Send a friend request without any other identifying information.
D.Greet others politely by sending an “Are you there?” with emojis.
【2】What does the word “it” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A.personal information
B.voice message
C.emoji
D.GIF
【3】Who will send you a wave to say goodbye according to the passage?
A.The post-80s generation.
B.The post-90s generation.
C.The post-2000s generation.

【4】What is the writer’s opinion about chatting online?
A.The ways you use to chat are the same as your parents.
B.Using too many emojis while chatting will annoy others.
C.Voice messages make it easier for others to understand you.
D.Your text messages on the phone will show what you’re feeling.

B.Good ways of sending right things.

27、 One day in autumn Squire Gordon went on a long journey. John went with him and I pulled the coach(马车). The weather was rainy and windy, but we travelled happily until we came to the old wooden bridge. A villager told us the river was rising fast. “There’s going to be a bad storm tonight,” he said.
We arrived in the town, but Squire Gordon’s business took a long time. We didn’t leave until late afternoon. The wind was blowing, making a terrible sound.
Suddenly we heard crack. And huge tree fell across the road in front of us. I stopped still(静静地). I was shaking with fear, but I did not turn round or run away.
“We must go back to the crossroads,” said John, “and drive six miles to the wooden bridge.” When we got there it was nearly dark. There was water on the middle of the bridge, but the Squire did not stop. As soon as my feet touched the bridge I knew that something was wrong, I stopped dead. “Go on, Beauty,” he said.
Just then a man saw us. “Hey there! Stop!” he cried.
“What is it?” shouted the Squire.
“The bridge is broken in the middle,” he answered. “If you go on to it, you are all going to drown(淹死) in the river.”
“Thank God!” said the Squire. “Thank you, Beauty!” said John. We turned around and went along the road by the river. For a long time no one said anything. Then John said: “Black Beauty saved our lives. He knew the bridge was dangerous.”
When we returned home, the Squire told Mrs Gordon:

That night I was glad, because I was very tired.
