四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、One Saturday afternoon, Amy found her sisters Meg and Jo getting well dressed. They were going to the theater with their friend Laurie. Amy wanted to come, too.

“I can’t take you, dear, because you aren’t invited”, began Meg, but Jo cut in impatiently, “You can’t go, Amy. Laurie invited only Meg and me”.

Amy cried, “You’ll be sorry for this, Jo.”

While Jo and Meg were at the theater, Amy burned up Jo’s book of writings. Jo’s loving work of several years was gone in the fire.

That night, Mother asked Jo to forgive her sister, but Jo refused.

The next day, Jo went to the river with Laurie to skate on the ice. Amy followed them. Jo saw her coming but turned away. Laurie was carefully skating and didn’t see Amy. He warned Jo to stay away from the middle of the river. The ice there was thin. Jo heard him, but Amy did not. Jo. realized that Amy probably hadn’t heard, but she said nothing. “Let Amy look after herself,” Jo thought.

Something turned Jo round. She happened to see Amy throw up her hands and go down, with a scaring cry. The ice broke. Jo tried to call Laurie, but her voice was gone. She tried to rush forward, but for a second she could only stand there. Suddenly, Laurie skated past her and shouted, “Bring a rail(横杆), Jo. Quick, quick!” Jo fetched some wood and pulled it across the ice. Together they got Amy out.

When Mother had put Amy to bed, Jo whispered, “Are you sure she is alive?”

“Quite safe, dear.” replied her mother cheerfully.

“Mother, I got angry so easily. Today, without Laurie, it might have been too late. Oh, Mother, what shall I do?”

“I get angry nearly every day of my life,” said Mrs. March. “but I’ve learned to regulate it. I’ve learned to stop myself saying the angry words, and you must try to do the same, my dear.”

Jo looked at Amy in her bed and gave her a big kiss. Amy opened her eyes and held out her arms. They held each other close.

  • 25、Every year on the second Sunday of May, Americans celebrate Mother’s Day. They spend the day with their mothers and give flowers or gifts to their mothers to show their thanks and love.

It was another Mother’s Day, but the young mother was a little unhappy, because she was 800 miles away from her parents. In the morning she phoned her mother to wish her a happy Mother’s Day, and her mother told her about the beautiful lilacs(丁香花)in the garden.

Later that day, when she told her husband about the lilacs, he said, “I know where we can find all that you want. Get the children and come on.” So they went, driving down the country roads.

  • 26、As an English, I can speak three languages—English, German and French, so do you think the British people are very good language learners? The fact is that they aren’t.

Some statistics (数据) from the survey done by the European Commission (欧盟委员会) showed that 62% of the British people only speak English. 38% speak at least one foreign  language and 18% speak two or more. Compared with the British people, 56% of the people in other European countries speak at least one foreign language and 28% speak two or more.

From this you can see that the British people are famous for not speaking foreign languages  and that they are not good language learners in Europe.

And the survey also showed that English is the most widely-spoken foreign language. Many European people can have a conversation in English. That’s why my people don’t think it is necessary to learn a foreign language.

In Britain, students are not required to learn a foreign language. That means learning a foreign language is only an option at school. In UK schools it is common for children to start learning a foreign language at 11 and many of them give it up at 14. So why don’t students continue learning foreign languages at school? Because they think it is more difficult to get good marks in languages than in other subjects such as science or history.

To solve this situation, the British government is looking for different ways to improve language learning at school. One way is to start learning it at a much younger age. Another one is to give school children more choices.

Changing the British attitude (态度) to learning foreign languages may be a hard task but the government decides to try!

1Which of the following about the British people is true?

    A. They are good language learners.

    B. 62% of them speak two or more languages.

    C. They are famous for speaking foreign languages.

    D. More than half of them only speak English.

2According to the passage, students in Britain prefer to learn _____.

    A. science or German   B. history or German

    C. science or history   D. German or French

    3In Paragraph 4, “an option” means _____.

    A. a choice   B. a game   C. a mistake   D. a conversation

4What is the best title of the passage?

    A. Speaking English   B. Foreign Language Learning in UK

    C. Schools in UK   D. Young English Learners

  • 27、The Chacaltaya ski area sits upon a small mountain glacier(冰河)in Bolivia. Although the area is less than a kilometer long, it once hosted international ski competitions. In the past ten years, however, the snow has melted(融化) very quickly. As Chacaltaya glacier melts, dark rocks are uncovered. These rocks absorb more heat, causing the snow to melt faster. The cycle seems unstoppable in the long run. Today, the snow is almost gone, and so are Chacaltaya’s days as a popular ski resort.

    A Global(全球的) Problem

In recent years, scientists all around the world have come to a terrifying(可怕的) conclusion.Global warming is a real problem, and one largely caused by human activity. But as experts discuss how to solve the problem, ice in mountains such as Chacaltaya, and near the North and South Poles, is melting faster than even the most pessimistic(悲观的)environmentalists once feared. Ten years ago, scientists warned that the Arctic Ocean(北冰洋)could lose all its ice in   about a hundred years. Now, they think it could happen much sooner. As climate scientist Mark Scrreze puts it, “Reality is exceeding expectations.”

    Glacicr Run

The ice sheet of Greenland is also melting more quickly than scientists predicted. Its largest outlet glacier, Jakobshavn Isbra, is moving toward the sea faster than we thought. In fact, the glacier is moving twice as fast as it was in 1995. Rising air and sea temperatures are two well-known causes. Researchers have also discovered other unexpected processes that cause them to melt faster. For instance, water from melting ice runs down cracks(裂缝)in the glacier and gets between the ice and the rock below. This makes it easier for the glacier to go into the warmer sea water.

Some researchers believe that Greenland’s melting if it continues, could add at least a meter to global sea levels by 2100. If the ice sheet of Antarctica, now largely unaffected(未受影响的),begins to melt, the next few centuries could see at least a two-meter rise in sea levels, forcing ten of millions of people out of their homes.

    Drying Out

While the melting of glaciers may flood some areas of the Earth, global warming is making the water disappear from other places. Many scientists think the glaciers of the Himalayas and the Andes could disappear in this century. As a result millions of people in India, Bangladesh. Bolivia and Peru who depend on water from mountain glaciers like Chacaltaya could find themselves in critical situation. An increasing number of heat waves and droughts worldwide also suggests global warming is having an influence on humans right now. and that it could change the face of the world in the future.

How can we avoid these terrible consequences(后果)? “We have to have a serious and immediate change in attitude(态度),”says Laurie David, a producer of the movie An inconvenient truth, which helped to raise awareness(意识)of the problem. Many believe that an attitude of hope makes a good beginning. As most would agree, an informed public is clearly in a better position to help address this critical issue.

【1】What is the main idea of this reading article?

A.Rising temperatures can cause global warming.

B.Global warming is causing problems on Earth.

C.Scientists are trying to slow the melting of glaciers.

D.GIobal warming is melting ski areas all around the world.

【2】What does the underlined sentence “Reality is exceeding expectations” mean?

A.The Arctic ice melting faster than predicted.

B.People having no water to drink in Peru.

C.The sun getting hotter than scientists thought.

D.Experts solving the global warming problem.

【3】What do some researchers believe will happen by the year 2100?

A.Global sea levels will rise by at least a meter.

B.There will be no more ice in the Arctic Ocean.

C.The ice sheet of Antarctica will have completely melted.

D.There will be fewer heat waves and droughts all over the world.

【4】Which of the following would Laurie David probably agree with?

A.Global warming is a problem that will fix itself over time.

B.The average person can’t do much to affect global warming.

C.To stop global warming ,people need to change how they think.

D.Global warming will only be a problem many years in the future.
