  • 25、Imagine the situation. You are driving along a desert or on a mountain. You have no idea where you are. Then your car breaks down. It is night and it is cold. You have no mobile phone. What do you do? Well, next time take a GPS with you. This invention may be able to help you. It is a device(装置) which uses satellites(卫星) to find the user’s position (位置). It can find your position within(不出某段距离) 20 meters. A GPS cannot start your car, but at least you will know where you are.

GPS, which means Global Positioning System, is a small radio receiver. It looks like a mobile phone. You can hold it in your hand, or put it in your pocket. It is sometimes put into a watch or a telephone. We also find GPS devices in cars, planes, or boats. Some of these devices have electronic maps, so you know where you are. For example, in a city they can tell you the name of the street.

There are three parts to the Global Positioning System. The first part is the receiver. You can hold it in your hand, or have it fixed into your car, plane, etc. The second part is a group of satellites orbiting(环绕) the Earth.

The receiver contacts at least four of the satellites and calculates(计算) its position. The third part of the system is a network of ground stations. They are all over the world. They control the satellites and make sure they are working well.

Some people think that in the future the GPS will be as common as the mobile. They are becoming cheaper and more and more accurate(精确的). There are also new uses for the GPS. Perhaps they will become like watches. Everyone will have one and you will never be lost again.

【1】According to the passage, with the help of the GPS, people _______.

A.can’t be lost in a new city

B.can’t find their way in different countries

C.can learn about the culture of an unknown place

D.can spend the least time getting to

【2】The underlined word “They” in paragraph3 means “_______”.

    A.ground stations.

    B.GPS devices

    C.satellites

    D.receivers

【3】The passage is mainly about _______.

    A.the history of the GPS

    B.the introduction of the GPS

    C.the shape of the GPS

D.the three parts of the GPS

【4】What can we infer(推测) from the passage?

A.All GPS devices have electronic maps.

B.People in many countries will use the GPS for free.

C.The receiver of the GPS contacts at least five of the satellites.

D.The GPS will become more and more common in everyday life.

  • 26、   You are walking down the street.  Suddenly it starts to rain and you don’t have an umbrella.  What do you do? Run or walk?

Most people would choose to run because it will get you out of the rain faster.  But if you run, you also run into more raindrops.  So what should you do?

Franco Bocci, a teacher at the University of Brescia in Italy, found that you should consider the wind direction and your body shape when you try to decide to move slowly or quickly in rain, according to the BBC.

When there is no wind and the rain is landing directly on you, Bocci suggests that you should run as fast as possible.

But if the wind comes from behind and blows the rain onto your back, the best thing to do is walking at the same speed as the wind.  This way, both your front and back will stay mostly dry.

When the wind blows from the side, you'll have to think about one more thing—your body shape.  Thinner people are hit by fewer raindrops.  So a fatter person should run, while a thinner person should still try to match their speed to the wind.

“In general (大体来说)the best thing is to run, as fast as you can—not always, but in general, Bocci told BBC News.  “If you’re really thin, it’s more probable that there will be an optimal speed.  Otherwise (否则),it is better to run fast. ”

Now you know what to do next time the rain catches you in the middle of the street.  But the best way to stay dry is still to carry an umbrella.

1According to Bocci, when it rains and there is no wind, what should you do?

A.Walk slowly. B.Run as fast as you can.

C.Wait until the rain stops. D.Walk at the same speed as the rain.

2Walking at the same speed when the wind comes from behind will   .

A.help you walk easily in the rain B.keep any rain falling on you

C.stop you from falling over D.keep your body mostly dry

3If the wind comes from the side, a thin person should consider________.

A.how fast he can run B.how long the rain will last

C.what the speed of the wind is D.what clothes he is wearing

4The underlined word “optimal” probably means________.

    A.合适的 B.极限的 C.缓慢的 D.难以超越的

  • 27、Do you believe in green living? Read the following blog and comments(评论)about a fun, easy and creative way to make your lifestyle greener.

    Gina’ Space                                                                    8:32 a. m. 11th February 2020

    Upcycling

Nowadays, we are more wasteful than ever. We need to start living more responsibly—but how? One answer is to upcycle. I started upcycling clothing. Making new things out of old clothes is the best way to mix my talent and my interest. I made a “new” hat for my brother. It used to be my dad’s sweater. Do you upcycle? If so, what new things have you made? If not, why not give it a try.

    Comments

    Terry-B                                                     9:08 a. m. 11th February 2020

Why don’t you give your older clothes to people in need? I even give away the most expensive things I don’t wear any more. I can help the environment while giving something useful to people in need.

    Gina                                                          9:28 a. m. 11th February 2020

Good point! I’m talking about the clothes that are too old to be worn by others. The same idea goes for food waste at restaurants and supermarkets. Before upcycling food that can still be eaten, for example, using it to make soil rich, we should give it to those in need.

    Bety99                                                         10:18a. m. 1lth February 2020

I’ve made dog toys out of socks. Upcycling clothing is a fun hobby.

【2】According to the passage, Gina ________ Terry-B’s opinion.

    A.agrees with

    B.disagrees with

    C.recommends

    D.doubts

A.To introduce how to make hats and toys.
