  • 24、   Anyone who works in an office knows the power of technology. When it works, life is wonderful. Information flies across the world in seconds. It saves time and makes our jobs easier. But when technology goes wrong, everyone hates it.

In March, Peter Golota received a gas bill for $0.00. He threw it away. In April, he received another bill for $0.00. He threw that one away, too. In May, the gas company sent him a letter which said he had to pay his gas bill. If he didn’t pay it, they were going to cut off his gas. He called and told them the bill was for $0.00. They said it was a computer error(错误). But the bills continued. Finally, he sent a check for $0.00. This caused the bank’s computer to crash(崩溃). After a lot of angry phone calls and letters between the man, the gas company, and the bank, the case went to court(法庭). The gas company lost, and had to pay Peter Golota $8, 000. Question: First trip to the USA

For my new job, I will travel to the United States next month and meet my American boss. This will be my first trip there. I’m worried about correct business behavior and manners. My boss invited me to his home for dinner. Do you have any advice?

Re: First trip to the USA

It’s a good idea to bring a small gift or something from your country. Don’t be surprised if your boss opens the gift right away. In the USA, people often open a gift when they receive it. In Korea, that is not polite, but it’s common in the USA.

Americans use their hands to eat some kinds of food, such as pizza and fried chicken. Watch your American hosts, and do what they do.

In Korea and Japan, it’s the custom to remove your shoes before entering a house. In the United States, you usually don’t take your shoes off. Once I was travelling in Japan and entered a house with my shoes on by mistake. Oops!

Re: First trip to the USA

Many Americans are very informal(非正式的)at home. One time I went to an American business partner’s home for dinner, I was surprised that everyone stood and talked in the kitchen while the husband and wife were cooking dinner. Besides, unlike in Korea, everyone took part in the dinner table conversation, even the man’s wife and children.

Re: First trip to the USA

I agree with Lee. You probably won’t speak about business during dinner, so my advice is to know some topics of conversation. For example, you can talk about travel, food, music, or sports. But you’d better not question about age.

  • 26、Close your eyes and picture a scientist. Does an image of a man show up in your mind?

It is hard to ignore that even in the 21st century the “scientist equals male” stereotype(成见) is still there. In the science world women’s voices are often unheard.

According to UNESCO, only 35 percent of global STEM (science technology engineering and mathematics) students in higher education are women. In pursuing science and technology careers women are more likely to be treated unfairly because of their motherhood and skin color. “Role models of women scientists need to be better represented on important international stages and allow their voices to be heard as a way to encourage youths”, Lenore Blum, a female scientist from the US said.

In December, Talk With Lu Jian, a Chinese TV show, launched a series of programs, including geneticist(遗传学家) Fu Qiaomei at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Rong Yi, a chief designer of the Long March 2F rocket.

“These female scientists share a strong passion(热情) for science,” said Lu Jian, the TV show’s host. “They are making a pathway(通道) for the next women scientists.” Actions should also be taken to create a better environment for women working in the field of science and technology, noted Science and Technology Daily. For example, they should be given more resources(资源), join in decision-making and gain support for their research during maternity(生育).
