  • 24、I remembered Julie coming to the front of the classroom after class one autumn day in September 1976. While most of the other students hurriedly left to enjoy the pleasant weather or to relax at the student union Julie remained to ask me questions about the next week’s exam. She had clearly already done some serious studying.

Julie never made it to the exam. The day after our conversation she was hit by a large truck as she rode a bike through a crossroads. I was sad to hear that Julie lay unconscious (昏迷的) in a hospital across town from our university.

Nurses silently came and went from Julie’s room. Her parents stood nearby quietly. Then the doctor entered the room and said to Julie’s parents and two brothers “Your Julie has only a few hours to live.” He continued to ask “Would you think about donating some of Julie’s organs (器官)?”

At the same time in a neighboring city a woman called Mary was trying to see better in her small living room. Her eyes followed every movement of her lively two-year-old baby. This mother was storing up memories when she could no longer see her child. Several cities away a young father called John was reading to his two sons in the hospital. However he was told to have only weeks to live. His only hope was a kidney transplant (肾脏移植).

The two parents looked at each other the doctor could see tears in their eyes. “Yes. Julie had once said she wanted to donate her organs in the event of her death. Julie always gave to others while she was alive. She would like to give in death.”

Within twenty-four hours Mary was told that she would receive one of Julie’s eyes and John was told to start preparing for a kidney transplant. Julie’s other organs would give life to other waiting patients.

“Julie died right after her twentieth birthday. Nothing could possibly be as heartbreaking as the death of your child says Julie’s mother. She continues “But Julie’s life was a gift to us. Knowing that in her death she gave the gift of life and sight to others is comforting to us.

  • 25、   For his eleventh birthday, Lin was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children’s Activity Centre and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one requirement: Lin would have to promise to study it for at least one year.

To that point Lin had had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Lin’s artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Lin’s parents would let him decide.

Lin’s eyes moved down the notice board that listed all the courses on offer. He stopped at “Photography,” He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Lin’s family wasn’t poor, they weren’t rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking.

The next course to catch his eyes was “Language Art”. He didn’t even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches. Lin, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse.

Then he saw it. “Cooking” sounded like something he’d like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient, it could be done alone and it was also creative.

Based on Lin’s hobby history, his dad had doubts, but he agreed. Much to his parents’ surprise, Lin kept his promise. He studied cooking at the Centre every Saturday, and practised at home, making delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Lin got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others.

The months turned to years but his hobby never changed again.

Now Lin is an adult and runs a successful restaurant. When customers say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift he received all those years ago.

  • 26、A PhD student surnamed Sun is in the hot seat for occupying a woman’s seat on a high-speed train on Aug 21.

In a video posted on Sina Weibo, the man can be seen slouching in a seat. When the woman asked him to give her seat back, he refused and said: “You have three choices –stand, take my seat or go to the dining coach .”

A train attendant (乘务员) then came to try to persuade him to give the seat back. Sun claimed he wasn’t able to stand on his own and asked for a wheelchair. Left with no other options, the attendant led the female passenger to another seat, China Daily reported.

The video quickly caused debate online. Many have expressed anger at the man’s behavior. Some people even dug up the man’s name, as well as his education and work history, and released this information online.

The Jinan Public Security Bureau handed down a punishment for Sun on Aug 24. He was fined 200 yuan and will not be allowed to buy train tickets for a set period of time, the People’s Daily reported.

However, some think the punishment was not strict enough, adding that those who behave similarly on airplanes can be held criminally liable (承担刑事责任), China News Service noted.

Experts explained that the bureau could only punish Sun in this way according to present laws and regulations. But they added that such laws could be improved to stop train passengers from behaving poorly.

1What do we know from the video posted on Sina Weibo?

    A. Sun stole a passenger’s purse.   B. Sun was sitting in someone else’s seat.

    C. Sun was inviting a woman to dinner.   D. Sun wanted to sit in a wheelchair.

    A. They showed their understanding.   B. They started to take others’ seats too.

    C. They felt angry about what he did.   D. They gave their seats to him.

3What can we infer from the story?

    A. Sun’s legs were seriously injured.
