  • 24、Dreams

"Dreams(梦) may be more important than sleep. We all need to dream," some scientists say.

Dreams take up about one quarter of our sleeping time. People have several dreams each night. Dreams are like short films. They are usually in colour. Some dreams are like old films. They come to us over and over again. That maybe because the dreamer is worrying about something. Dreaming maybe a way of trying to find an answer.

Some people get new ideas about their work from dreams. They may have been thinking about their work all day. These thoughts can carry over into dreams.

Sometimes we wake up with a good feeling from a dream. But often we can't remember the dream. Dreams can disappear(消失) quickly from memory(记忆).

Too much dreaming can be harmful(有害的). The more we sleep, the longer we dream. The mind is hard at work when we dream. That is why we may have a long sleep and still wake up tired.

  • 25、   Since last year, short videos have gotten tons of attention online. Many people create and share short videos on popular video apps like Douyin and Kuaishou. You can even add music and special effects (特效) to your videos. The videos are 15 seconds to a few minutes long.  They show people doing activities like cooking, exercising and singing.

Teenagers especially enjoy these videos. Many junior high school students said they enjoyed watching these short videos. The videos let teenagers see funny and exciting things they don't usually see. Many teens like to share the fun things they do with others as well. For example, a 12-year-old user named Xiaoqianyu has posted videos showing her learning jazz dance. This has won her many fans.

However, the videos can also cause trouble.  Some students spend too much time watching them and not enough time studying.

To deal with this problem, Douyin added a new function (功能) in April. It locks the app if someone uses the app for over two hours a day.  In the same month, the government asked companies to regulate(管理) these apps much more strictly.

  • 26、Eating food is enjoyable, but cooking can be challenging. For those who don’t have basic cooking skills, or are too busy working or traveling, one thing can save them—instant noodles.

This year marks the 63rd anniversary of the invention of instant noodles. Ever since they were created by Japanese businessman Momofuku Ando in 1958, instant noodles have been popular around the world. In China, the product has almost become a necessity for those who travel by train.

There are some fun facts about instant noodles: The total length of the noodles in one package is 51 meters. The first instant noodles were considered a luxury(奢侈的)product. When they first came to Japanese supermarkets in 1958, they were 6 times the cost of fresh undone noodles. Japanese people even voted instant noodles as one of their best inventions of the 20th century.

For instant noodles, as well as many other “instant” foods, convenience is the key selling point. They are supposed to make our lives easier.

_______________.For example, in wars, soldiers eat compressed biscuits and canned meat because they don’t need to cook these foods. And in the 1960s, mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables became popular in the US. This is because more women started working and had no time to cook.

In recent years, however, online meal-ordering services have brought challenge to instant foods. Uber Eats is a popular app of this kind in the United States. In China, we have Dianping and Meituan. These services offer not only convenience, but also more choices and tastier food. According to the World Instant Noodle Association, instant noodle sales dropped by 17 percent in China as of 2016.

  • 27、A 340-foot-long ramp(舷梯) allows kids with disabilities to get to the tree house.

Tree houses are wonderful places to play with friends. You can even just sit in them and dream. But for some kids, tree houses are only a dream. Many kids have never been in a tree house. Why? They have disabilities. They are unable to climb. Be Allen and Phil Trabulsy are good citizens. They wanted to make these kids’ dreams come true in 1998, they started Forever Young Tree Houses in Vermont. This group makes tree houses for kids with disabilities.

The tree houses have long ramps. Ramps help kids in wheelchairs get into the houses.

Kristen Messer, 17, visited a tree house for the first time. It was really great having a tree house that I could get into without any help,” Kristen says.

Chaz Freeman, a 19-year-old, uses a wheelchair. After he visited a tree house in New Hampshire, he said with a smile, “We get to experience what it is like to be a normal kid.”
