25、
Most of us have three meals a day. We take food for granted. And we don’t think about it. But experts argue that a food crisis is coming. This crisis is going to make us change the way we think about food.
Food is in great need because of the growing world population. By 1960, the population was three billion. It doubled to six billion by 1999. By 2050, the food prices will get higher and higher.
So, what can a hungry, crowded world do? One suggestion is to eat less meat. Meat uses more natural resources (资源,谷物). It requires more land to produce one pound of meat than to produce one pound of grain. It also requires between 5 and 10 times more water than vegetables. So, eating less meat will provide more land for farming, and it will save water.
To eat less meat, people will need to change their eating habits. That will not be easy. Americans, for example, they eat twice as much meat as people in other countries. At the same time, in developing countries like China and Brazil, demanding for meat will continue to put pressure on natural resources.
World population is increasing, resources are becoming fewer, and food prices are rising. Therefore, we don’t need to give up meat completely. But we need to eat more grains and less meat.

26、John was a very strong man. Once he got a job cutting wood in a forest(森林). His boss gave him an axe(斧头) and showed him the area where he should work.
The first day, John cut down 18 trees.
“ Good,” the boss said,“Keep that up”!
Happily, John tried harder the next day, but could only cut down 15 trees.
The third day he tried even harder, but could only cut down 10 trees. Day after day he was cutting down fewer and fewer trees.
“ I must be losing my strength(力气),” John thought. He went to the boss and apologized(道歉), saying that he could not understand what was going on.
“ When was the last time you sharpened(磨) your axe?” the boss asked.
“ Sharpened? I have no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut down trees!” said John.
While John was working hard, he didn’t work “ smart”. He didn’t think about the best way to do his job. Many of us never learn new skills. We think that whatever we have learned is enough.
根据短文内容,判断下列句子的正误。正确的填T,错误的填F.
【1】The boss was pleased with John’s work the first day.
【2】John cut down three trees fewer than the first day on the third day.
【3】John never sharpened his axe.
【4】It’s a waste of time for John to sharpen the axe.
【5】The story tells us we should work “ smart ”.
27、Last week, my granddaughter started kindergarten(幼儿园), and certainly I wished her success. I was saying something that is not true. What I actually wish for her is failure. I believe in the importance of failure.
Success is boring. Success is proving that you can do something that you already know you can do, or do something correctly the first time, which can often be a problem for the future. First-time success is usually a fluke(侥幸). First-time failure, in fact, is the natural order of things.
Failure means how we learn. I have been told of an African phrase(短语) describing a good cook as “she who has broken many bowls”. If you’ve spent enough time in the kitchen and have broken a lot of bowls, probably you know a lot about cooking. I once had a dinner with a group of cooks, and they spent time comparing knife wounds and burn scars. They knew how much their failures gave them.
My younger daughter is a dancer. She spent three years getting ready for an act. She did it successfully for years. There was no reason for her to change the act—but she did anyway. She said she was no longer learning anything new and she was bored; and if she was bored, she couldn’t play well. So she changed the act. She risked failure in order to feed her heart.
My granddaughter is a perfectionist. But I will also, I hope, remind her of what she learned, and how she can do whatever it is better next time. I probably won’t tell her that failure is a good thing, because that’s not a lesson you can learn when you’re five. I hope I can tell her, though, that it’s not the end of the world. Indeed, with luck, it is the beginning.
【1】What did the writer really wish for her granddaughter in the kindergarten?
A. Success. B. Failure. C. Kindness. D. Care.
【2】The third paragraph mainly tells us .
A. what “a good cook” means B. a cook should often cook
C. a cook must break many bowls D. failure means how we learn
【3】 Why did the younger daughter change the act?
A. Because she didn’t do well in it.
B. Because she was asked to change it.
C. Because she wanted to feed her heart.
D. Because she wanted to try a failure.
【4】What does the writer hope to tell the granddaughter?
A. Failure is a good thing.
B. She can’t fail any more.
C. Failure is not the end of the world.
D. Success is the end of the world.
