  • 21、The U.S. has countless secret swimming holes throughout most states, many of which you’ve likely never heard of unless you’re from the area.

    Havasu Falls (Arizona)

This attractive waterfall in the Grand Canyon is undoubtedly a destination spot requiring a 10-mile walk to the falls. You can take a guided tour to the falls, or make it on your own. The Havasu Falls are on the Havasupai Indian Reservation, which means you’ll need to get a permit to visit — this has become increasingly difficult as more people discover this hidden place.

    Homestead Crater (Utah)

The Homestead Crater is hidden under a rock dome(圆顶) with an opening at the top that allows for sunlight and air. It was once only accessible by that top opening, but there is now easy access through a side path for visitors. Go for a swim in this beautiful mineral water spring.

    Hamilton Pool (Austin)

Hamilton Pool was created when an underground river’s roof fell down suddenly; exposing what is now the swimming hole and creating a 50-foot waterfall that flows over the above limestone(石灰岩). You’ll have to reserve beforehand to gain entry to the Hamilton Pool Preserve.

    Chutes and Ladders (Maui)

To get to this secret swimming hole, you’ll have to take a rope 40 feet down the face of a cliff, and then climb down about 8 feet of lava rock to the pool. Once there, however, you’ll be glad you made the journey. The swimming hole is on the edge of the ocean — a natural pool, you could say — with a depth that invites you to jump in without crowds of people around to watch.

【1】What is a must if you visit Havasu Falls?

    A.A car.

    B.A guide.

    C.A permit.

【2】How do visitors enter Homestead Crater now?

    A.By swimming.

    B.Through the top.

    C.Through the side.

    D.By boat.

【3】In which place should you use a rope?

    A.Havasu Falls .

    B.Homestead Crater.

    C.Hamilton Pool.

    D.Chutes and Ladders.

  • 22、Notpla, a London-based firm, makes a seaweed-based substitute (代替物) for single use plastic packaging. Although some of Notpla’s products are suitable to be eaten, they are designed to be dissolved (溶解) after usage. Made of seaweed instead of a conventional plastic coating, the company’s packaging is fully biodegradable and ideal for use as packaging for kitchen and bathroom supplies like coffee and toilet paper.

According to the United Nations, 331 million kilograms of plastic garbage is produced annually around the world. About 60% of the estimated 9.15 billion tons of plastic produced since the early 1950s has been taken to landfills.

Plastics harm the water, the air, and our bodies. Many experts agree that single-use plastics are unnecessary and dangerous. Some governments and towns in the United States have taken action. New York has banned most plastic shopping bags, while plastic straws have been banned in Miami Beach. Overseas, India stated in August that it plans to place a wide ban on single-use plastics this upcoming summer, with the European Union already implementing this ban.

Seaweed comes in a variety of species and can be harvested or farmed. Notpla uses plants that have been farmed. Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez and Pierre Paslie, the inventors of Notpla, initially considered seaweed as a solution to the world’s plastic problem for several reasons. Seaweed is plentiful and grows quickly. Additionally it doesn’t compete with land crops and is highly favored for its ability to remove some waste products like carbon from the atmosphere.

In cooperation with the online food ordering service Just Eat, the startup recently tested its product. Last year, the two companies handed out 30, 000 takeaway boxes at various UK restaurants. Plans are in the works to offer the boxes across Europe in 2022. Notpla’s team intends to replace single use plastic in the supply chain more generally as they scale. The company recognizes the difficulty of such a job, considering the volume of plastics consumed around the world.

  • 24、   Since September about 11m hectares of Australia have been in flames. This year’s fires are the worst on record, with at least 26 people dead, about half-billion animals burned alive, and over 2300 homes destroyed. Australians of all species are suffering the most. But the fires have serious consequences for the rest of the world, too.

New Zealand, one of Australia’s closest neighbors, is feeling the effects of the bushfires. The most important effect of the fires might be on the country’s glaciers, about which Helen Clark, New Zealand’s former prime minister, tweeted: “Australian bushfires have created haze in New Zealand with particular impact on the South Island yesterday and now spreading more widely. Impact of ash on glaciers is likely to speed melting.” Melting glaciers could open up a future none of us wants to suffer.

There’s no such thing as weather that happens in isolation. As a recent Forbes article reports, fires have the potential to not only block visibility for airplanes, grounding them, but to create pockets of hotter or colder air, or create situations where the weather is increasingly less stable — although no one is yet certain how far from the Australian continent those effects might wander, or how harmful they may prove to be.

In addition to coal, Australia also exports all kinds of agricultural products — like beef and wool—particularly to Asian countries including China and Japan. But what happens when the land it uses to grow all that food and fiber is destroyed by fire? Obviously, no more goods to export, which creates a huge problem in the international supply chain. Thanks to globalization, pretty much no country eats only the food it grows. What happens to the global food supply as agricultural land in Australia and other export nation’s burns to a crisp?

1What can we learn about the Australian bushfires?

A.They’ve left most of Australian land in flames.

B.They’ve speeded the melting of glaciers.

C.They will certainly create hotter air.

D.No one is certain how harmful their effects will be on climate.

2What’s the author’s attitude towards the future of the global food supply?

    A.Doubtful. B.Objective.

    C.Concerned. D.Indifferent.

3What is the best title for the text?

A.The Effects of the Australian Bushfires on Climate Change

B.Australian Bushfires: a Big Disaster to the Country

C.What the Australian Bushfires Mean for the Rest of the World?

D.Why the Australian Bushfires Affect the Rest of the World?
