二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Miss a step when walking down the stairs and your legs will attempt to recover your balance after the unexpected fall—but how? The key to remaining upright seems to be in the way your leg and foot muscles(肌肉)are activated.

“One of the things we know about human movement is that our ability to stay on our feet upright is pretty remarkable, but we don’t understand a lot about how we achieve this,” says Taylor Dick at the University of Queensland in Australia.

To figure it out, she and her colleagues conducted an experiment that involved attempting to make people fall over. The researchers had 10 people jump in place on top of platforms that were sitting on a device measuring the forces from each foot individually. They then removed the platforms without warning. As participants tried to keep their balance, the researchers used sensors on their legs to track muscle activity and changes in muscle length.

They determined that experiencing an unexpected unexpected drop automatically increased the timing between when our muscles in our legs and feet first activated and when they reached their shortest length. This in turn enabled the foot muscles to absorb energy more effectively, allowing us to recover from the drop. The team also found that while opposing muscles normally contract(收缩)in turn when walking, both groups of muscles contract at the same time during an unexpected drop.

In cases where you aren’t able to successfully recover and end up falling, she says it may be because a different strategy is used, one that relies on signals travelling from your leg muscles to your brain and then back to your leg muscles. This may take more time than it does to travel the distance to the new “lower” ground.

Dick hopes that this research ca inform the design of lower limb(肢)assistive devices, which can help people with disabilities go up or down stairs and move over rough ground.

【1】What did the researchers do to the participants?

A.They helped them during their fall.

    B.They carefully counted their steps.

C.It can bring assistance to the disabled.

D.It can encourage more brain training.

【4】From which is the text most probably taken?

  • 22、China is betting on its successful hybrid rice varieties to fight food shortage in Africa. “We're no longer suffering from hunger,” 55-vear-old Georges Ranaivomanana, a Madagasean farmer who took the lead in planting Chinese hybrid rice in his town of Mahitsy. Georges told Xinhua that he hoped that all Madagascan farmers would use the seeds to raise their living standards.

China has been helping African countries develop productive rice farming for years with its hybrid rice. For farmers on the continent like Ranaivomanana, they are “very grateful” to the Chinese as the hybrid rice is the key to better food security and higher incomes.

In May, the China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Centre opened a research centre in Madagascar to select hybrid rice varieties based on the island nation's diverse ecological environment, in an effort to find more productive crops for a continent long troubled by insufficient grain output.

In the northwestern Nigerian state of Kebbi, Chinese expert Wang Xuemin stood in a rice field, surrounded by green rice plants, “This year, we are using a new technology,” he said, adding that it “can significantly reduce labor and other costs.” “The land, climate and rice farming methods in Nigeria are very different from those in China. We had a lot of problems at the beginning,” said the 51-year-old who has been in Nigeria for 16 years.

In 2006, after Wang and his colleagues had sown the seeds, their field management techniques and large-scale farming equipment could not adapt to the operating environment and hundreds of hectares of rice fields were almost completely taken over by weeds. “We came to realize that blindly copying the Chinese model is not feasible(可行的). It is necessary to constantly innovate our techniques to fit the local situation in Africa,” he said.

After more than ten years of research and innovation, the Nigerian farm now becomes a major training and mechanized production centre in the country, training more than 1,000 farmers and agricultural machinery management staff.

【1】What's the attitude of African farmers about Chinese hybrid rice?

    A.Full of gratitude.

    B.A little skeptical.

    C.Extremely curious.

    D.Much disappointed.

【2】What can we infer from what Wang Xuemin said?

A.Chinese technology of hybrid rice can't be applied in Africa.

B.Different technologies should be applied to different areas.

C.Chinese experts contributes to raising African living standards.

D.Chinese technology can be used all over the world.

【3】How long did it take for the Nigerian farm to be a modern production centre?

    A.More than ten decades.

    B.Less than a year.

    C.Over a decade.

    D.Less than ten years.

【4】What's the best title of the text?

A.Africans Fight Food Shortage with Chinese

B.China's Hybrid Rice Sows Hope for Africa

C.Chinese Hybrid Rice Research Has Not Been Open in Africa

D.The Sowing of Hybrid Rice Should Vary from Country

  • 23、   When you look in the mirror, you see yourself. That puts you in the company of animals like dolphins, elephants and chimpanzees. The mirror test is often used as a way of measuring whether animals have self-awareness. And an animal that is aware of itself has a high level of intelligence. Now, a species of fish - the cleaner wrasse - has also spotted its reflection.

Alex Jordan, a biologist at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, is one of the researchers of the study on cleaner wrasse consciousness. He and his team conducted many tests that show the fish does seem to recognize its reflection - when the researchers added a colored mark to its body, the fish would even try to remove the mark upon catching sight of it in the mirror. It seems to indicate the clever fish species has some sense of self or individuality.

But Jordan said, “I’m the last to say that the cleaner wrasse is as smart as chimpanzees.” Instead, he believes that the measure scientists have used for nearly 50 years is imperfect.

One problem with the test, for example, is that it uses vision to measure self-awareness. Yet not all animals rely on sight to recognize themselves. It may well be that a bat, for example, which depends on sonar (声波定位) to get around, is self-conscious. Elephants, while able to pass the mirror test, rely more heavily on smell than on sight.

Consciousness in humans or animals is not easy to measure or understand. Philosophers and scientists have long wrestled with the questions of how a sense of self is assessed, and how it relates to physical processes. Jordan believes the cleaner wrasse is self-cognizant (自我知晓的), but not the same extent (程度) as a human. This means scientists need to reconsider whether some concepts centered on humans can be used in understanding animals.

1The study on the cleaner wrasse made Alex Jordan .

A.doubt whether the mirror test is reliable

B.discover the secret about the fish’s sight

C.develop a better method to replace the mirror test

D.believe the cleaner wrasse is as smart as chimpanzees

2Which of the following can replace the underlined part “wrestled with” ?

    A.Presented with. B.Ended with.

    C.Agreed with. D.Struggled with.

3What can we learn from the text?

A.It is relatively easy to test animals' consciousness.

B.Some concepts for humans can’t be applied to animals.

C.Animals rely on at least two senses to get to know themselves.

D.More mirror tests are needed to prove the cleaner wrasse is self-aware.
